  1. hi caper by flashing do you mean they are rubbing up against rocks. Do they dive head first down at the substrate and try and scratch their head area? Are there any white spots visible at all? Has their been any other signs, ie going off food, fish separating from the rest of the school?
  2. it may be a free connection, im sure theres probably a few places in the city that have ffree wireless points. Either way im not going to be downloading large files just a quick checkin on the forums and im off
  3. yeah can't stay away from fish! . im in aparment at the moment sitting on a balcony so that i can pirate someones wireless connection
  4. yup still here, limited internet access at the mo though
  5. lol i knew you'd be around and reply quickly which is good because i'm on someone elses unsecured wireless connection lol. hmm very tempting i will be down to check them out once i'm back
  6. Argh, i knew the new fish/corals would arrive while i'm away  .. anyone know if the flame angel/six line wrasse etc still available? Conch, or anyone else do you know what sort of condition the above fish are in? Also anyone know if the sun corals are still there, are they yellow with orange centres or completely yellow? On the plus side i've visited both Hollywood Fish Farms while i've been up here in Auckland. I thought they had nice setups, and the mt roskill has a nice marine display tank. Reasonable selection of corals/fish and i thought their prices were pretty reasonable too
  7. They don't kill the amazons but the affected leaves die off so to keep a tidy appearance you need to cut off the stripped leaves every so often.
  8. well done! its rewarding when you manage to bring a sick fish/horse back from the brink
  9. no sorry the bright green one next to the xenia, obviously got the name wrong, what is it?
  10. my two males strip alot of the my amazon swords
  11. well you must be doing something right if you're discus are spawning so often. Would be nice to raise some discus fry unfortunatley i'm pretty sure all my discus are male :-? Can't really offer any advice but if you end up selling any i might be interested
  12. i sell the games the box makers play with
  13. Those symptoms sound more hex which droncit/drontal/adtape is not usually used for this. Droncit/prazi ie is used primarily for external gill flukes and sometimes tapeworm. The primary symptoms of this would be discus scratching, coughing, spitting food and general malaise. Hex on the other hand is an internal protozoan parasite, the symptoms being weight loss, dark appearance stringy white faeces, disinterest in food, turning on their sides. Hex can be treated with metronidazole and can particularly affect discus and angel fish, fry are particularly susceptible, do you keep angels in your tank with your discus? I suggest getting both meds if possible, metronidazole (also known as flagyl) is hard to get hold of unfortunately but if you take a printout to your vet of the symptoms sometimes it can be prescribed. Good luck!
  14. Hi Tony sorry to hear your bad news , its really frustrating when you lose fish, especially your first discus fry batch!! What were the symptoms your fry were displaying? (trying to deduce if it was external parasites (eg gill flukes) or internal parasites)
  15. the last time i bought two adult discus i didn't quarantine them and regretted it. One of the discus had suspected internal parasites, and i think passed it on to an existing discus. To cut a long story short, i ended up having to quarantine both discus and treat with meds. In future i will quarantine all new arrivals. All you would need is a 40L tank and either a cycled filter or daily waterchanges
  16. you should definitely do the diving! my partner and stayed at Matamanoa resort in fiji and did our first 2 dives and they were incredible. Second dive was a shark dive and we saw around 5 black tip reef sharks was great and would love to do more diving
  17. thats roughly the same size as mine and probably only holds around 30L, even though its small they're useful for hiding the equipment, and cutting down on the noise fromt the return etc (mines got foam on the inside of the cabinet which helps noise reduction). If i had more space i would make a bigger sump but the juwel tanks have really small cabinet interiors
  18. i'd buy some off you if you manage to breed them . Those juwel sponges work well to lure them, i've got a sponge in my sump and theres often quite a few pods living in that.
  19. yay new corals i have christmas gift vouchers at the 'house of of O' to spend :bounce:
  20. phosphates not so important in a FW tank (used more in saltwater tanks). I wouldn't worry about checking for phosphates, whater changes will help keep them down and as long as you're not feeding large amounts of frozen foods they'll stay down
  21. Sterbais are nice corys and they can tolerate the high temps that discus live in
  22. lol, mines a pig, i used ot give him a bit of food with my hands but now i figure they both get enough food when i feed the fish. Its amazine how much they can stuff in to those tiny little mouths!
  23. Also the aqua medic ones have a remote ballast so the heat is directed away from the tank
  24. I'm running the 4ft Aquamedic Oceanlights this one here http://www.aqua-medic.com/oceanlight_T5_HQI_combo.shtml I've only been running them about a month but have been very happy with them. They are stylish in design and very quiet, there is almost no noise from the ballast, which is something to think about if you're buying halides and running them in a living room like i am and want them to be quiet. My tanks 5ft long and i run 2 x 250W and 2 x 54W T5s. I was a little concerned the light coverage may not be enough to light right to the ends of the tank but it has been fine. They certainly make a lot of difference. Interestingly i found that as soon as i started running the MHs my diatoms completely disappeared and my rocks became nice and clean, i suspect that low light was contributing to the diatom problem. From memory i think the Critter Kingdom on stanmore is running the Aqua one MHs with the optional stands to attach them to the tank so if want to see what they're like check them out.
