  1. Mushies came with the tank and were massive from when i got them, started with 3 and i've just had another one split so now i've got 4
  2. couple of new additions, a white bubble coral and octospawn coral and a full tank shot and a photo of blenny waiting on his 'rock' for dinner as you can see m rocks are a bit brown most likely due to not enough flow and too many nutrients. The xenia, and hammer and hairy mushrooms from cookie extreme have grown well and the hairy mushroom is now 4 mushrooms. Got the metal halide cables up today (well my partner did, isn't he good to me ), so will finish getting them up this week.
  3. i keep a male flame and male neon blue gourami together in my 300L community tank. As long as they have their space they should be ok, they will have their spats. Mine sometimes swim sidelong against each other head to tail and try and slap each other with their tails, thats about as vicious as mine get.
  4. I find if i try and syphon off any crap of the sand i end up syphoning up the sand and it inevitably clogs the syphon Depending on how i go in the weekend we might be hanging the MH lights this weekend so i'll see if i can take a pic once i've got them up. I suspect my diatom problem is related to light, (atm there i estimate there is only around 185W of light on a 400L tank), flow i need to increase this as well and maybe silicates
  5. Great blenny shot  definitely my favourite fish. Looks really nice matt, i prefer the way you have aquascaped to the before shot. The way you have done it has made it appear as though you have more corals than before. Question for you, do you turn your sand over much? both tank shots you don't have much diatom algae, from memory we both set up our tanks at the same time but i have a lot more diatom coverage on my rocks, glass etc. Seeing as your not on ro/di either i'm interested to know if you experience as much diatom algae.
  6. i change around 40% every week on my discus tank. Water comes straight from the tank but i use the tap mixer to make sure the water going in is the same temperature as the tank water
  7. he's awesome, pity he's a clam eater
  8. when we moved the shrimp in my tank i think we just lured them in to a plastic bag. i don't think you'd want to be moving rocks around etc with them in there, imagine squashing one just remember they're sensitive to salinity changes so id use the existing tank water when you put them in the bucket.
  9. don't you just love blennies! what type do you have?
  10. Have you got a picture John? I would love to see it
  11. Got my new toy this week my Oceanlight MH pendant, this model here http://www.aqua-medic.com/oceanlight_T5_HQI_combo.shtml the 4ft version with the 2 x 250WMH. Anyway so this weekend my partners looking to mount it to suspend it above the tank for me. We have a coved ceiling. Directly above the middle of the tank is where the cove starts and the ceiling changes heights. We were thinking of drilling holes the width of the suspension cables through the cove and mounting a piece of 2x4 wood in the ceiling space. Cables will pass through the cove and instead of mounting directly in the beams will keep going until they reach the mounted 2x4 and connect to this. Does this sound Ok, is there any other better way?
  12. yeah as much as i'd love them i don't think i'd be able to support the pair. I was down at organism today and picked up the red octospawn coral and my partner bought me the white bubble coral as a christmas present . I think my tank would be fine supporting one goby (as i do see copepods scurrying around at night) but i don't want to split the pair up, so i said to John that if somebody buys one and one is left over then i'll take the one left over (I'd feel bad splitting them up). i've had the tank set up since august, think it was running for around 2 years before that.
  13. OK thanks, do you think my tank would be able to support the food requirements of both the mandarins and the goby pair? Im in two minds at the moment, if i can't support the log term i don't thinks fair to take the pair, so as much as i'd like them i may have to leave them. Some of the info on the web suggests they can be prone to starvation, and i really don't want to do this to them
  14. yeah i know its not likely to solve the problem.. only corals on the sandbed are a fungia (which should be able to shed the sand itself) and star polyps these pair aren't the yellow headed variety, i'm not sure of the scientific name they are white with smaller blue dots i think. How do you deworm them what med do you use?
  15. Yeah looking at those two they look very cool, i've got them on hold at the mo
  16. Im wondering if ppl can give me some advice on fish compatibility. i'm looking at purchasing a pair of Sleeper Gobys (not sure of the scientific name, but its not the yellowheaded sleeper goby, they have a white body). Currently in the tank is a pair of clowns, a yellow tang, a mandarin fish, 2 large cleaner shrimp and a lawnmower blenny. Tank is 400L, with liverock and sandbed around 5cm thick. i'm wondering about the compatibility of the gobies with the lawnmower blenny, is their likely to be aggression, the only info i could find is that lawnmower blennies usually only become aggressive to other algae eaters. I have quite a lot of diatom growth on my sand and the gobies appeal because of their sand sifting behaviour. The pair that i'm looking at apparently are eating pellets and mysid shrimp. So any thoughts ppl?
  17. back to the 'who has a mandarin in 'what size tank question. Mines in a 400L, probably around 80kg liverock. The tank is lightly stocked with a couple of clowns, yellow tang, lawnmower blenny and couple of cleaners. I believe the mandarin is probably around 1 - 2 years old as it was in the tank whne i purchased the setup. I am debating getting a flame angel in the future, but am aware of that it will be competing with the mandarin for pods.. Ive just bought some phyto to dose the tank with which i should receive tomorrow, im going to see if this makes any visible increase in the pod population
  18. aren't you el presidente Markos? (ok ok so its not a phillipines accent, more spanish)
  19. found a pic of your wife on the web
  20. yip they sure are crafty. My discus are fine with my hands in the tank, fine with a gravel syphon in the tank but put a net within view of the tank and VROOOM they've all hidden
