  1. Used my sisters insect collection to trial macro: The pins with green heads are normal sewing pins (to give an idea of the size of the insects)
  2. They look like adults now! Lily: Fern:
  3. Those are cool pics! I went outside looking for things to photograph and all I found was a jumping spider ( and I got too close and it jumped on my camera ) Female apisto: Lily flying:
  4. And I had to put her to bed last night - almost ripped my arms to shreds! She looks like an angel in the pictures
  5. I had been using a canon power shot A560, but upgraded to a canon SX30 IS today :happy2: Pohutakawa flower: Firefly, my cat is not photogenic at all (often looks angry in pics) but i feel this one turned out ok And Hazel, sisters cat, is extremly photogenic! I need to work with the camera a bit more to get some fish ones (as on the other camera I was blindly using the aquarium setting). I'm hoping to be going to the zoo next week so will hopefully have some pics to show from that trip
  6. Thats hopeful for this spawn then! The first spawn the dad did no guarding at all and that left mum swimming to the other side of the tank to ward off enemies. There is quite a large gap between the gravel and the top of the cave, so i'm thinking of slightly reducing it today so that they have less of an area to defend.
  7. They spawned again this time. I'll see how far they go this time
  8. I had been hoping that the parents would do the raising. In the past floating containers have allowed me to raise gbas, cories and apistos.
  9. Is that from when they are in the gravel? Or are they not meant to fall off the cave?
  10. They're both too full already. I guess an option is to raise the eggs again myself. Or sell some of the fish
  11. I only have 2 other tanks, one is a 25 litre hexagon so not suitable and the other is already a community tank. And unfortunatly I'm not in the position to get another tank.
  12. Yeah, there are other fish in the tank (black phantom tetras, sterbai cories, 2 red whiptails and a bn) I've got a fine gravel substrate. The parents stopped defending the area almost a week ago. They would have been free swimming on the 25th.
  13. My wild kribs bred a few weeks ago. There were about 50 eggs. Over 24hrs the eggs reduced to 15, so I took the cave away to raise them myself, 10 hatched and i'm now looking after 6 fry. A week later I returned the cave and they bred again, more eggs this time. After a couple of days the eggs fell to the ground, and then I saw them wriggling. Then they were all gone I think it was the same female both times. Are krib eggs meant to fall to the ground? Is there anything I can do?
  14. Yeah, it's lucky both love birds and blueys eat mealworms.
  15. Today is my blueys, Sky, birthday :happy2: I've been working on her new enclosure set up. She had half leaf litter and half carpet. Now its a back area of sand (with grasses), a front area of fine bark and her soft bed: My dad built her a outdoor box, it has a mesh top that I can use when she's outside (Haven't been able to take her outside yet, the weather isn't the best yet..) And her birthday cake. Its catfood, with banana around and a fd mealworm candle. She also got a couple of wax moth larvae too
  16. Its amazing to think that just after 6 1/2 weeks, they're almost adult sized! And Jade, playing peak-a-boo
  17. Lily is getting much better at flying now, and Fern is a master at flying. Since Lily is more friendly, compared to Fern, she is behind the camera and Fern is the one being photographed. Will put pics up when the back board is on the new cage (its still being finished)
  18. When I go away, I put daily amounts of fish food in pill boxes (from the $2 shop that have separate comartments for each day) for as many days as i'm going to be away. This prevents over feeding. I learnt this from experience, I went away for 1 night, forgot to tell mum to feed the fish & she decided to put a bunch of food in from every container of food I own! There was heaps left in the tank when I got back....
  19. Lily flew tonight! And Fern doesn't seen to know how to perch properly
  20. Lily came out of the nest today. So I got to watch all 4 in the cage! I had Amber, Lily and Jade out in my room and Lily looked like she wanted to fly, since both parents were flying around her. She is much more comfortable with me than Fern is.
  21. Good to hear. I know that animals don't always follow the rules, but will Jade and Amber stay as a pair and always view their offspring as their offspring?
  22. unfortunatly, my room won't fit an aviary, and its too cold outside (I live behind a hill so the sun doesn't stay around very long. But when they eventually move into the large cage i'll post pics. I'm hoping that they'll live as a family group?
  23. Last night I had some excellent progress, Fern flew! They were having some time in the new cage and he flew to the back of the cage! I try not to use the flash much but it shows off the coloursnicely!
  24. yes I have a nice big cage for them, once the little ones are old enough
