  1. yeah its a xenopus (African clawed frog) -there are Some at Auckland Museum if anyone is Interested. .. Unsure if species from photo though- probably a Xenopus laevis
  2. score! that is an awesome tank and you got it really really cheap! here is a pic of the sump off another thread (this pic is viewed from the back) the water enters on the right side and trickles down through those teeth thing (this stops bubbles and salt creep in the sump. The baffles (divider things in the sump) are aranged in such a way that water has to flow under then over making it a sediment trap. of course the water level has to be kept above the hight of the lowest baffle. I am afraid that you will have to make/ buy a trickle tower for filtration as this sump doesn't have one (they are not used on reef tanks). For an amazon biotope for a 5 ft i would get an Eheim 1260 or similar

where in Auckland are you? I might be able to pop around to do water changes and feed them every couple of days (no promises as yet though!). Although I am working at Little Barrier from Jan 30th onwards so you may need someone else to feed the last week... Cheers- david

    xenia

I cut a branch off and rubber band it onto a small coral rock, making sure that most of the branch is in a crevice so that the rubber band does not just cut the whole way through before the xenia attaches... Thats the way i do it and I know most others do it that way too
  8. I was involved with the Iguanas and Monitors in the debacle at the end of last year... http://www.nzherald.co.nz/topic/story.c ... d=10415142 It was a bit sad to see them go, they were fantastic reptiles... but as illegally imported animals their fate rested in the hands of MAF
  9. yours is a tiger brittlestar I think Conch?
  10. 20L way too small mate.. if you want a small tank for fish go for 150L or so... Couple of clowns and a small goby... One thing you have to remember is that unlike freshwater fish, most gobies are wild caught... So although you have a certain responibility to care for freshwater fish as they are live animals, this responsibility is amplified with marine fish as they are caught in extremely fragile ecosystems. Because of this, it is PIVOTAL that you do alot of research BEFORE you get into it... Ask questions for sure, but do lots of reading first... Chimera has put a selection of links at the top of the page, there is another NZ site for marines so check that out. Also check out Reefcentral, Reefs.org, Advanced aquarist mag (read the archives too), Reefkeeping mag, Ozreef etc... Rant over...
  11. thats what alot of people do
  12. Get yourself a fluidised reactor to take care of the phosphates... and an auto-topoff unit could be useful too...
  13. should be fine... sand-sifting gobies are not very hardy thoug- excluding phylangea gobies so keep an eye on them

  16. is that clam from Tel? Looking good.. i think your ID's are a bit wrong... IMO the grape cpral is infact a Octopus coral and the octopus is a frogspawn... of course thats the problem with common names... hairy Acros look good too
