  1. you can have accurate common names but there needs to be a different common name for each. Don't get me wrong, i am "pro latin names" but i also realise that others do not share the same passion or have hours & hours to search through various sites researching latin names etc. i am not familiar with new world cichilds but alot of african common names are their latin name which helps but there are also many common names, different for each fish including similar fish like peacocks.
  2. i prefer latin names but think the important part of any name, common or scientific is it's accuracy. I have seen plenty of scientific names thrown around for african species that simply weren't that fish, no matter what language you say it in excrement is excrement.
  3. also the people generally won't know what they are looking at so the "pretty" ones will be a hit. I would go for something lively & colourful, yellows & dems will go well i think.
  4. this comment is merely stating the reality, not suggesting that they are a waste of time.
  5. what warranty does the fluval have?
  6. i thought the ones using computer fans were trying to stop the condensation inside the hood. agitating the water is best done with an air stone, the flow of the filter or with a wave makers or similar pumps.
  7. that will be fine, i have run up to 2400lph on a four footer. getting the circulation right can be a challenge depending on what you are keeping & trying to achieve.
  8. that was more of a rhetorical question it comes down to the $ up front for something out of the norm to entice the importer to seek it then it comes down to whether the they can source it.
  9. i'm curious to know what happens once several people have spent countless hours & possibly a large amount of money getting new fish onto the list. will this magically make the importers bring them in?
  10. wow that is overkill. i will never fall down at double the weight.
  11. that shows they last "for years & years" with water in them. the ceramic must contain some moisture & when they are used the moisture leaves the ceramic. the moisture in the ones i have is minimal & only at the top. there certainly aren't drips or pools at the bottom. maybe that is hiding something
  12. often that is the most reliable or only info they have to go on, they aren't necessarily enthusiasts like us.
  13. my LFS names them what is on the supply list, possibly where most naming issues originate.
  14. i have jagers & have found them brilliant for keeping the tank at the desired temp. they have showed some moisture inside them from a few weeks from purchase which i queried with the supplier who assured me they will be fine & they have a 2 or 3 year (can't remember exactly) warranty so not that much of a worry. the latest one i got doesn't have the ceramic in the centre of the element & it has not got any mosture after a few mnths so i would say that is the cause of the moisture, i have an older one that i estimate is around 8 years old with a plastic element centre & it has no moisture either.
  15. i priced the steel recently for one & it was around $180, possibly $120 if i changed the design a bit to reduce a small amount of material. add labour & it isn't going to be cheap.
  16. cool. thanks repto, carlos & siran
  17. don't like either, i suppose the lighting would be perfect for disco fish
  18. i knew that but i have no experience with them at all or even really know exactly what the look like
  19. two different things. pop eye is usually due to poor water quality & good water quality is the cure. the other may require pics to try to sort exactly what it is.
  20. awesome, thanks so much for that
  21. i concentrate on tropheus & under the moorii listing there are sum 30 different variants including the rainbows available so i would be well happy with a couple of them to start with.
  22. i wonder how many fish are on the list but are not being kept here, maybe instead of putting effort into allowing more species lets explore what we can get first.
