    New Tank

nice tank & stand, very impressive. as for your stocking, i suggest you do some research of the tiger, oscars & mixing with smaller fish like africans. i only have experience with africans but i believe they get really big & will eat the yellows. i am sure someone can advise what the story is but i would expect it will be a case of one or the other.
  2. I don't know anything about cat breeding registers or the cat show scene at all but has any of the creators of this breeding register contacted other similar systems like cat breeding registries? if not this may help for giudence of systems that are required.
  3. here's my article. if you have anything less than brand new 7 wire battened fences never consider having sheep. they are the most infuriating animals on the planet. 3 of my 8 are off to my friends slaughter house on sunday as they continually push through the fences.
  4. there is also a exception to everything ...... the "it breeds true" theory makes dragon bloods ok.....
  5. don't put fish down the insinkerator, the scales can clog the waste pipe. Large ones can (snapper skins), small fish will be fine though.
  6. & if there is no oxygen in the water they will drown. hmm, fart. wouldn't they have to get air to their stomaches to do that? female fish won't fart ever, they don't keep their mouth shut long enough to build up pressure
  7. put it in a net a hit the concrete. just make sure the fish hits the concrete rather than the rim of the net if you get what i mean. i prefer that something is killed straight away rather the an asphyxiating poison or something similar.
  8. p44, have you read about the origin of e yellows? what do you think about the gene pool & what it has produced?
  9. i used to have a RS legacy, man was it hard on the pocket. alot of that was due to me giving it absolute berries & alot was down to the way they are made. everytime i replaced the gear box (4 times) they had to pull all the intercooler etc out to get at the top bolts of the box. 16 hours labour to remove & replace a gear box.
  10. if you do look at them you will see. the suppliers aren't interested in quality, only quanitity & $.
  11. do you keep trout? i feed Novo Rift Sinking sticks which are great for africans, 3 years & not a single bloat case. 8) they must be good, this includes tropheus.
  12. thats how i feed them, they break it down. When they get a little larger they can "choke" on the sinking pellets. i had a few fry get a pellet in & then it swelled & they could breathe & died.
  13. 160 million is alot to get back once you've spent it.
  14. this is why i will be offering my tropheus at $10 each, so someone can purchase 12 for $120 rather than just two & be successful with them instead of setting themselves up to fail unwittingly. the other step to this will be the way i am prepared to sell them, in groups of 12 for example (i don't know yet but will see) not in pairs unless they already have a group or some other warranting situation that may arise. I want more people to experience tropheus they way they should. the prices of tropheus in stores are high because they cost from the supplier is high. Most of them are costing mid to high $40's per fish, if i was a supplier i would realise these are not going to be big sellers when you combine the high cost & fact that you need a large group to be successful. I would try to source large numbers cheaper so the buy price in store was less so that they are more accessable to the general public.
  15. can't hire clubs for kids that i am aware of. if 1000 kids start the game then the chances of getting a star is soo much higher than if they take it up as a teenager or older. its very similar to car racing, its not always the best driver that gets to race, its the guy that can afford to pay to race. this is a good discussion IMO, interesting to see what others think.
  16. yeah, there will be some thought if certain people want to purchase some whether for themselves or others. i hope making them cheap gets new keepers into the hobby or even just people giving it a go. A recent tornament was run nationally for junior golfers which advertised for non-playing children to have a go at golf. that can only be a positive thing for the sport, getting people that may not have tried if it wasn't made easy for them. thats what i want to happen, grow the hobby of african keeping so there is more demand on the other aspects from our lfs's, like food etc. more demand could also mean more to choose from in the future.

    moving soon

i half filled my chillybin, oxygen is most important over water volume when moving fish. i would recoomend a chilly bin for ease of transporting, bagging may take ages depending on how many fish you have. i have a 100L chillybin but had to transport 40 or so africans.
  18. as i said before, i paid $30 each for my tropheus duboisi (x12=$360), they were round or under 30mm. I love these fish, they are amazing & i would have got other strains if they were cheaper but there is a limit to what i can spend on fish having a young family. I want more people to also be able to have tropheus so i am willing to sell fry for $10 each as i want these to become more popular in the hobby. i have had a few people pm me about duboisi & once they realise you need a large group & what others are asking for them they simply forget it as its not an amount they want to part with for something they simply like the look of. at the current prices it is too difficult for people to get into having them.
  19. actually, all my fish have come from members here, johannes, mike & alex mainly. the quality of aficans i have seen from sullpiers is 90% rubbish so i don't want that stock. i am selling small quanities of very small fish, they are about 30mm. $2 is a fair price for such a small fish IMO.

    moving soon

when i moved i got a large chilly bin & put tank water & fish into it for transport. make sure you put an air hose in before & after travel depending on stocking. empty your tanks, leave the substrate in & water in you filter if its an external. move the tanks & then fill it as if a 100% water change. i would add hot water to increase the temp somewhere near what they are used to. i have done this twice without any losses. HTH
  21. don the snorkel & get someone to video it. actually you could try & catch them like the malawi people do with a net for export.
  22. i quite like the look of them, have you seen the "FAIRY CICHLID made in NZ" ones on TM?
