  1. Hi guys, What would be the best way of saving as many guppy fry numbers as possible but at the same time not stressing out the parent fish too much. Basically I have spent a small fortune (lets not go there ) on rare guppy strains so obviously need a way to save as many young as possible to onsell to you guys later on I'm sure many of you think that breeding traps are the way to go but I have tried these today by putting three females in them, and within minutes two obviously were not happy and jumped out back into the water, almost missing the water and falling to the ground (which means death ), so is there another option that they would like more and not risk their lives trying to escape? :-? I was thinking maybe heavily stocked tanks of java moss and floating plants, but would this be very successful? Do the parents actually eat the fry if they are well fed? Sorry about all the questions, but I would really appreciate any of your thoughts and suggestions to what you would recommend. Finally, in the tanks I have internal filters that could suck up some young, what sort of material could I cover the inlet gaps with to avoid this as much as possible? (using sponge filters on my smaller tanks but you can't really do this with large tanks) Any suggestions on this also would be great, as I said the more I save now the sooner I can onsell them to you guys Thanks
  2. Angels like higher temperatures, probably 25 degrees minimum and 27 degreees maximum. Anywhere inbetween is OK, I don't currently have any but when I did I kept mine at about 26 degrees. Hope this helps
  3. Haven't got them yet but I can now add solid moscow blues to my list of strains (Lets not get into how much I paid )
  4. kd123 try testing your water, maybe something has entered that the fish don't like :-? If you like you can put up the results and i'm sure someone will help you out
  5. You guys are so funny     Even the mods are getting involved 8)

    Guppy problems

Thanks guys for the help. Yeah the water quality was spot on and nothing appeared different in the tests. Unfortunately one of the two fish didn't make it, but the other one that can't swim properly is isolated in a floating container and seems to be improving Maybe it was some sort of weakness in the fish due to massive inbreeding or something making them suspectible to anything or having lower tolerance to change :-? I know others who have purchased these fish have also been having problems, hopefully we can breed them strong and healthy with healthy fry in return 8) What i'm trying to do is provide them with no real special care and gradually alter introduce them to standard water so that they can become more hardy and to favour the more tolerant individuals to reproduce and carry on more favourable alleles to future geneartions off offspring. It looks as though 14 of the 16 are adapting well to this change Enough waffle   , thanks again for the help

    Guppy problems

Hi guys, I recently bought 16 guppies of Phil, although they are all still alive, two of them have some sort of disease/problem. I don't really know much about diseases so could someone please suggest what it could be and how it can be cured, as the guppy strains are low in number and we can't afford any to die. One of the guppies sits at the bottom of the tank, more to one side, doesn't eat and has protuding scales (sort of like a pinecone body), the others in the tank seem to be alright and the water quality is pretty good, mature water etc. The second guppy in another tank gets picked on by the other female guppies, eats OK but swims vertically down most of the time and looks to have inflammed gills, and is really skinny. Again all the others in this tank are OK and really active. Please help  Hopefully I haven't picked this up to late. Thanks
  8. Thanks fish-unit but I think I will be OK . The heater hasn't seemed to be heating so I think its working alright, the chances are it will work with no problems. I got these a couple of hours ago and its an initial novely thing to worry about the fish due to the expense, but over time you realise despite the cost they are just like any normal fish and just as hardy   . This strain is lying completely in my hands, there are apparantely no more in NZ and so it would suck if they all died on me the first night and we lose the strain forever I need to get over myself
  9. I would but its too late, the shop is closed
  10. Thanks for that, but I am a bit hesitant of putting such a large one in such a small volume of water incase the thermostat breaks again, with a heater like this the water would quickly boil. This is probably a dumb question, its just that this is a new strain of guppy I have bought, $200 for four pairs, and so there is not the numbers to cater for any deaths at the moment until the females drop offspring My thought was that the water will not freeze without a heater this time of year, and until I get another one leave them out, but I have put it in and will monitor it for a couple of hours and see if the water heats up.
  11. Currently I have two new guppy strains: Red albino ribbonfin Albino RREA green grass
  12. Hi guys, You probably don't this time of year because they only need a temp of about 20-22 degrees but thought I would check. They are currently in a 40L tank and the heater has just broken (kept heating up the water) so I unplugged it, now the only heater available to use is a 100W heater, what do you guys reckon, keep the tank without a heater or put this one in? The housing is only temporary and I will be getting new heaters and tanks hopefully in the next few days. Thanks 8)
  13. I'm so sorry to hear this has happened to you , i don't know if its true but i've been told these types of tank can do this if they have too much direct sunlight shinig at them :-? . If you want to brave another tank I might be able to help you out, I have a spare ar-620T tank and woodgrain matching stand that I can part with reasonably cheaply for you, it has been set up for marines and has spare marine bulbs etc, might be ideal for you?? I am waiting for a reply from someone ele but the chances are they won't buy it as they have bid on something else anyway. Anyway, feel free to send me a PM if interested (not trying to force a sale or anything but it is the tank and stand you need back to recomplete your broken tank, so this could help you out???)
  14. Its horrible to think that we could have purchased these a few months ago for $100 I remember being interested, but then the bidding went way up before I bought them, the owners got more greedy and really increased the price There again, they originally had about 30 or so froglets, sold a couple but now only have three adults, so maybe alot have died while growing up, these ones might be genetically strong
  15. It is weird how so many turned up in the wild. If my year 12 bio is correct its about survival of the fittest in the wild, where mutated alleles that show up on the phenotype of individuals are either favourable or nonfavourable to the environment and whether this new mutation is better adapted to suit the selection pressures of the environment. Therefore, due to the contrast of the yellow colour to the surrounding natural environemnt, when this albino allele was expressed in the physical makeup, selection pressures should have quickly acted and most if not all of the tadpoles expressing the phenotype should have been removed by natural predatation etc... Therefore, it was real luck to find the 40 or so that he apparantely did, he must have been in the right place at the right time. Anyway, I'm going to be going on a frog hunt these holidays Doesn't look like i'm going to be able to afford these ones. They are AWESOME
  16. Yeah just some plant would work, once spawning is complete take the parents out and leave the eggs in the existing tank, this increases the number of fertile eggs as the water remains "spermed" therefore fertilising more eggs over time. Thats what I heard anyway  I'm new into goldfish like you, originally have kept tropical but want to breed something a bit different
  17. Sorry, forgot to say that i've had it for about 1 year and never noticed anything before now, nothing really has changed to cause whitespot :-?
  18. Thanks guys, he is in a barrel by himself ATM (not really a pond  ). I will try to grab a picture of him tomorrow and see if I can feel the pimples. I saw on a website that if they are really in breeding condition that they will rub against other males aswell if there are no present females, which got me wondering. Thanks again, will try to upload a pic tomorrow
  19. Long story short, I bought an apparent "female" gloeeye fish that I have been conditioning and that I have finally found a male for. However, today after taking "her" out of the pond and putting it with the male I noticed white spots all over her body, fins etc. She was not leaving this male alone and following it around, rubbing up against it, but nothing happened. So... Is this "female" a male that has been conditioned to breed and is in breeding mode, does she have whitespot or what is the stroy? I have other goldfish that are sepearted male and female and the males are developing these white spots on the gills and fins, but not all over the body. I have red though that males can develop these white spots all over their body though in breeding condition, so is this fish actually a male? White spot or conditioned male that was sold as a female, what do you think? :-? Thanks 8)
  20. Yay, all my exams are over now aswell 8) Don't even ask how physics went Anyway, who cares, its party time
  21. I haven't done anything yet  8)
  22. All four, landscapes, urban, skills and disparities. I'm a bit worried now because I sound like the only person to finish them all, and that was because I thought you didn't have to answer all the questions, it said EITHER: QUESTION 1 a) OR Question 1b) etc... But everyone else answered the lot, I was either hulucinating (sp  ) or no-one reads the instructions. Hope I didn't fail by missing out questions, this was the subject that i've been getting E's in all year, so a change to all N's would suck!!! I'm sure it said EITHER, OR, that means you get to choose aye?
  23. Level two, all my exams are level two apart from the level one bio paper. Tomorrow i've got six maths papers, algebra, co-ordinate geometry, calculus, non-linear graphs, trig equations and sequences and series
  24. 6 down 2 to go now... I am having no time to study for these exams because they are crammed together, maths tomorrow with six papers and four physics papers on Friday. Ran out of time in geography, and forgot to take in my ruler for the skills graphing test  so had to do all sorts of unusual things and use very unusual things to act as the ruler  You should see what I have done to my admission slip   Science was alright, not as easy as I was hoping though
  25. Ecology was HARD 4 down, 4 to go...
