  1. Yeah good point Ira. He was reacting to the presence of the other fish around him. Still doesn't explain why an apparently perfectly healthy looking fish would suddenly not be able to see. With the others when they appear to have gone blind, they obviously become an easy target and get very reclusive, hiding in holes, etc so nothing else can attack them. Since they can't see they dont come out and basically starve to death. Any ideas as to what may cause them to go blind?
  2. Gave my tank a big cleanout this morning and noticed that Boris, my Phaelena goby, was swimming around the top of the tank and didn't seem at all bothered with me messing around in the tank. He is normally a bit on the shy side if anyone is close to the tank. On closer inspection I found that he couldn't see. Didn't respond to me sticking a hand alongside his head on either side so he obviously couldn't see it. Was able to touch him without him reacting much, although he did try to chew my finger. Watched him a bit longer and he was bumping into the glass and then I found him stuck on the overflow grate. This is not the first time I have had a fish go blind on me. Have had a couple of clowns and chromis go blind too. Apart from not being able to see they appear perfectly healthy, no obvious physical problems, not skinny (although that soon changes once they can't see to eat), no spot or anything else. I do have a couple of softies that are reputed to be a bit on the toxic side (devils hand, ricordea and a big rhodactis) but have had fish in the tank way longer than the goby and they don't seem to have any problems. I have a citron goby that sits in the devils hand all day. Did a full spectrum water parameter check - all OK. I am at a loss as too why these fish have gone blind. Has anyone else out there had similar problems, more to the point have they figured out why. Has anyone got any suggestions as to why or what could be causing it? Any advice would be appreciated

    sad anemone

Had one that was quite similar. Was quite small when I got it and it got a bit too much lovin' from mum clown (who is quite big). To give it a chance I moved it as far away from the clowns home base and into more light. I figured it would peg out when we were in Fiji so put it the refugium to die in peace. Still alive when we got back so put it back in the main tank and gave it a chunk of pilchard It is now about 5 times the size and has nice extension with some of the bubble tips pretty big. It now gets regular feeds of pillie and can easily put up with mum clowns lovin. It could also be that I have changed my lights and the tank now has nearly 4 times the light it had previously. Really pleased with its progress as all the other anenomes I've had didn't last very long.
  4. Very cool, someone out there is very creative (must have a reef tank )
  5. Looking right nice Puttputt. It has even gone on from what I remember from a month ago. Good job
  6. Is the rep going to come in every day and look after them too Makes you wonder a bit :-?
  7. Nice sheep Are they pets or food on the hoof for your tanks

    Carbon

My work buys powdered activated carbon (PAC) by the tonne
  9. You beauty - go for it. Open a branch in Northland, Kerikeri would be good
  10. Defiantly or definitely? Springer, if you do not have a marine tank I would so NOT be starting one off with a USD$600 fish I have lost count of the number of fish I have lost over the years for all sorts of reasons (sickness, fighting, jumpers, old age or just vanished and presumably became shrimp dinner, etc) but can say I have never spent USD$600 on a fish (even if that is for a pair) it is still a lot of $$$$ US or NZ This can be a seriously expensive hobby even without mega buck individuals I suggest that you lower your sights a bit or take on Ira's advice and get the normal perc and permanent marker. Mind you I don't know your bank balance and someone won the $18M lotto

    awesome photo

Oh Yeah Thats awesome. Is it in your tank and what is it. Type of goby?
  12. My little anenome had the same problem. My big mum fire clown did exactly the same thing - basically loved it toooo much. And yeah you are right - I felt a bit like a pervert watching her she seemed to enjoy it so much   I took the anenome out and put it in my fuge for a while to let it recover for a bit then replaced it in the main tank as far from the clown as possible. Fortunately the clown has eggs at one end of the tank and doesn't like being too far from them (unlike dad who doesn't leave them at all (bit hen pecked I reckon) so putting the anenome well away gives it a bit of respite. Seems to be doing quite well now, growing and extending nicely and even getting colour back. You could try moving yours in the tank
  13. Ooooh Zev, I know where there is a DSLR

    Refugiums

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I thought it had died, but no - like a phoenix from the ashes - it rises again I'm happy to say that I got confused on page 1 and have nothing to add Will leave it to the boffins and the stirrers. Funny read though
  15. Finicky bugger aren't you Zev I'd be happy with a camera that can take a photo of something on the lens I'll happily take it when you give it away when you get your DSLR
  16. Looks good PJ. There is some quite cool stuff in our waters. Have often seen stuff when diving that I thought would look good in an aquarium Does this go for anyone gregb Can I just send you the receipt for reimbursement?

    CLOWN TANG

picspics puttputt I'd take the clown tang too but if he is not friendly with yellow tangs would not be good. Also if he has that much attitude, between him and mum clown I'd never get my hands in the tank
  18. No idea What I want to know is how did you get such a clear photo of it if it is only about 2mm across. Wicked macro function Pretty cool looking though
  19. Yip, all fired up now for a week and a half. Nothing seems to have been affected too badly although my big devils hand packed a bit of a sad. Seems to be recovering now though - I moved it a bit lower down. Lost a bit blood as mum clown was not happy about me fiddling in the tank and she decided she was particularly grumpy that day  It seems to have revved up the algae a bit with the extra light though Have to see if I can find some before and after photos and start a new post (don't want to hijack this one )
  20. The shafts should just be held in by the magnetic field so should come out reasonably easily. Probably need to be careful in that you pull it out along the axis of the shaft and not side to side - that will probably cause it to snap. Haven't tried it but one thought could be to use one of those "divot" removers that they use in golf to repair the greens. Basically they have a couple of prongs that could slide behind the vanes of the propellor and used to pull it straight out - gently but!
  21. Very interesting. Saw this one in Fiji - bout the size of a billiard ball. Wasn't game to give it a poke as I had no idea what the hell it was Is yours the same?
  22. Yep Puttputt's is the only other tank I've seen from the forum members and I was mightily impressed. And that was before the lighting upgrade so it is probably looking even better now
  23. Easy Puttputt Wasn't about to rush off and play guinea pig with my tank . Just been a lot of discussion about zeovit on here with there being two very obvious sides. It seems that folks are really right into it or right against it. I've got no space for any new toys under my tank anyways (Oh, I want a fishroom ) and my next big buy will be more flow and control. Have been looking at Streams on the net. Could be a while before that happens though
  24. Seems to me that Tom_Shannon may be quite appreciative of the "hardware" side of things as well as the mobile parts of it
