    Cool Crinoid

Thought some of you might like to see this. I shot this on my trip to Fiji last month. It is pretty short as I wasn't sure how to shoot a video on my digital camera until I tried it out on this. It is a crinoid in action. The DM picked it up out of the sand and just let it go and this is what it did. Was pretty wild as I didn't even know what it was. Waddaya reckon? http://s55.photobucket.com/albums/g125/skippy_photos/Fiji%20Trip/?action=view&current=MOV00312.flv Freaky wee beastie eh
  3. Yip, photobucket is pretty easy to use
  4. See Tom I told ya There popping out of the woodwork already. C'mon guys and girls pass out the invites and show off your setups. I would but Kerikeri is a hell of a long way from Hamilton
  5. Yay, Pacific Blue asked the question I'm in the same boat PB, lots of discussion about it on here (obviously a couple of schools of thought about it) but I didn't know what it was all about either  Thanks for the link and post jetski and reef. May need to look into it a bit more and make my own decision. (then I can join the pro or anti-zeovit camp on the forum and send barbed comments on here ) Just kidding everyone - each to their own - I just don't know anything about it yet so am neither pro or anti
  6. Hi Tom Shannon Welcome to the saltie/reefing world. I completely endorse what JDM and Jetski have suggested. My piece of advice - don't get too fired up about getting stuff swimming around in there before you have a bit of an idea as to what you are doing. It is an awesome hobby, but it is not the cheapest thing in the world to do. The equipment, lighting, etc can get very expensive (particularly when you just need to go the next step - which you will ) and the livestock ain't cheap. I'm not trying to discourage you - just hopefully save you some money and heartache. As JDM suggested - READ! And you are off to the right start - ask questions. I note you are in Hamilton - I think there is a few salties/reefers there. If you ask nicely, I'm sure there will be a few on this forum that will be happy to show you their setups (we can't help ourselves ) Again, welcome and have fun with it Cheers Skippy

    Daniel's Tank

Nice Does he come out much? Mine used to but she has been a bit reclusive lately.
  8. Rossco It was all I could do to stop myself stuffing it in my BC pocket and bringing it home with me. The corals over there were awesome. Could easily filled half a plane back with me. Some of the other anenome's I saw were simply massive - like 6ft x 4ft. And on one dive it was wall to wall fungia's - they were everywhere and all sorts of colours. Just stunning Mind you, if we all picked a couple up and brought them home with us when we were on holiday (assuming we were actually allowed to ) then it wouldn't be too long before the reefs were trashed and there would be no place to dive on holidays and be blown away. As much as I would like to bring stuff home - I think I prefer them where they are
  9. Rossco How do you like this one? Snapped in Fiji last month. Seriously wanted to bring it home with me

    Dive Rarotonga

Reef is not in too good a shape is it. Shame as it seems as there are some very nice fish swimming about. I like the spotted boxfish or were they toby's? (sorry Reef refers to the pics not the one on here )
  11. Sweet Should try and visit a few others around Auckland as well while I am down there. Maybe get some ideas for re-scaping my tank. Her indoors may get a bit bored after the first 20 or so though Will let you know closer to the time if I'm likely to swing by your way Skippy
  12.   OK, found them - kind of need to read the whole post  WOW - serious stuff. If that is their power bill there I would hate to see it in Northland
  13. The link didn't work for me, could only see the tank during construction (unless I missed a link- better have another look) You build a tank like that up here and I'll bring my dive gear round to clean it for you
  14. Looking good Puttputt Those new lights look like they are making a difference. Have got mine up, just waiting for my sparkie to turn up so I can fire them up. BTW, they look awesome Am coming down on the 19th for a spending spree (oh and the rugby). Got some lfs vouchers for my 40th
  15. That sucker adds another room to the house Imagine the cost in lighting and stocking it Mind you, I still want it

    Dive Rarotonga

Bummer Fay That must have been a major letdown after building up for it. Sorry to rub it in but Fiji was brilliant diving (except for getting a head cold half way through the holiday) Look forward to the fishie pics though
  17. Nice, there is still plenty on the market up here and I think the number of properties available may be starting to slow the price explosion. Land is still relatively cheap (certainly compared to Auckland ) I reckon you should build then you can design in fishrooms, inwall tanks, all the power and plumbing stuff, etc, etc, etc. If I had thought more about it when we built our place could have done that. Mind you, place is mighty big even without extra fishrooms, etc but I so wish I had done it in this place as we are likely to be there for a bit. Maybe I should throw my Dad out of the flat and convert it to a fish tank - I could dive in it Imagine a 110m2 fish tank Happy to give you a hand to smash walls down when you start up here  I have to build a storage shed in the big shed soon. Lock up for the gardening stuff so we can get them out of the garage/store room in the house. Have already got the timber, etc so no real excuses not to get into it (apart from hanging my new lights  )
  18. Have been thinking more about it. I think that first I may redesign my reefscape so it is not so "wall like". This should give me more places I can put new stuff. Think I might have a lower level in a corner where I could try the devils finger as it is and see how it looks. Should help improve the tank flow and the lighting lower down, although this shouldn't be so much of an issue when I get my new lights up and running (hopefully next week). Need to get into the ceiling to look at reinforcing so I don't end up with my lights and ceiling in the tank Have been playing with new layouts on paper. Thinking about a couple of small peaks and mini benches so that should give me a bunch more horizontal places to put stuff. Will also look at putting my leathers and mushies in one area of the tank so they don't kill my other stuff (which has happened in the past ) Good opportunity to start a new thread - tank re-reefscaping Suggested to her who must be obeyed that there is plenty of room for a bigger tank, sump, skimmer, etc She was less than enthusiastic :-? Next time we build a house she reckons. Going to the architect this arvo Well at least I can dream about it Thanks again for the advice. If I do decide to frag the big beastie, will advise in due course. Skippy

    Reefs Reef Tank

Did the tangaterriers have a swim in the tank?  Or are they an amphibious species that climb out for exercise  What are the fish further up? Are they fairy anthias? They are stunning. A school of those would be awesome. The coral colours look pretty stunning to me
  21. Rogan wrote   oh, if only Thanks for the comments. All useful feedback but doesn't help me decide I think I will need to ponder for a bit Any more thoughts welcome cheers Skippy
  22. I have a dilemma. I have a quite large dead mans hand (devils finger) that is outgrowing my tank. While it looks cool at the moment it is taking up some serious room and preventing me getting other corals Have thought about "fragging" it (if that is the right term for a softie) but I reckon it is too nice a specimen to chop up. What do you reckon. It is a serious size - about 45cm dia. See photo below. I am thinking about selling it but am torn between keeping a showpiece or making space for new stuff. Is there anyone out there that may be interested? You will need a big tank Be interested in any thoughts folks out there may have (oh the last photo is mainly cause the goby is so cute  )
  23. Could be a bit tricky if they are both males
