  1. Wait wait wait. They're totally different products. Flourish is a trace elements fertiliser. Flourish Excel is a carbon supplement. Flourish or a similar fertiliser are essential if you dont have many fish, but you'll see the biggest gains from Flourish Excel but its like 5 times the price too. Because it makes your plants more efficent at using nutrient, it will help algae problems including death of beard algaes.
  2. I feed my guys courgette. Once my GBAs worked out it was food, now they swarm to it like flies.
  3. Congrats and great photos too
  4. And since I've created a thread ranting about my fishies, I bought another Jebo 819 last weekend too for the gold sev / convicts tank.
  5. Coated powder. Paint powder which is embedded in to the metal is stronger than stuff stuck to the outisde
  6. lol somebody thought they were being smart at the post office
  7. Its more to do with osmosis. Basically 'flushes' the fish. Causes fluid to be sucked out, then sucked back in when its in clean freshwater again. Sorry I'm at work and don't have time to find you a good article on the subject. :(
  8. Only the pearl danios, most likely due to colour. Never chased anything else, and never bitten another fish (even other threadfins). They're normally a really peaceful fish. He's in with 6 adult angels, and a pair of penguin (I think) tetras and two baby convicts that we couldn't catch. Unless he gets hurt in there he can stay there no problem. Got the penguin tetras for a small tank, I figured they'd be the same attitude as neon tetras. Not the case. I've only got one male and one female now because they killed the rest, and have had to put them in with my bigger fish as they'll pick and harrass anything else Put them in with the tank mentioned above, within 30 seconds of being introduced they'd already had a go at the baby convicts crazy agro lil fish.
  9. You mix it in with the water your washing the tank with (in high dosage), so its dissolved. To keep my answer simple, the basic reason is organisms that live in freshwater usually die in saltwater.
  10. Not a problem, just wanted to share this. I've got an adult male threadfin rainbow living in my community. Well I added 6 huge pearl danios on the weekend and oh my god. He went crazy! Big displays everywhere, constantly chasing them, and eventually biting them (despite the fact they're bigger and faster). Ended up removing him for the sake of the Danios! Tank was a 200L 4 footer.
  11. Betta breeder at our local club just kept them in the same tank, and would send them to fish stores in the same bag. Apparently they dont fight until they move tank or are seperated then reintroduced.
  12. I do the same but do the final transfer using a syphon with a short bit of garden hose. I find if I just tip it, I end up with a few rebelious fry stuck to the glass.
  13. Personally I don't really bother, but then I am lazy. I just give it a normal scrub, rinse etc I like Caryl's salt idea. I can't imagine anything that likes being dried out, covered in fresh water, then covered in salt water. You can also buy stereliser at the pet store for $5-ish.

Oh and oscars vary on personality, but I've found they're mostly talk, and when beaten are absolute sulks, I dont know the Jack Dempsy well enough as I've never kept one myself but I did grow out a Red Devil with an Oscar (~15-20cm). As soon as the red devil was almost as big as the oscar that was it, game over. So I'd be cautious, oscars make good tank rulers but sad losers.

Yeah, I kind of agree, I love oscars and their personality, but I've had just as interesting fish in Severums etc My biggest personality fish have been the Red Devil cichlid and Green Severum. An excited Oscar is awesome though! Especially at food time. But anyway back on topic hehe Those other fish seem fine to me in the start Simian, but you'd have to watch as the oscar got older (after a year or so), make sure everyone is getting on OK. You'd probably want to replace the bristlenose with a redspot or common plec at some stage (recommend redspot, commons are lazy). Reason being is its possible an adult oscar will try to swallow the bristlenose, only to find out later it has spikes. Now the african cichlids you have are better suited to a high pH tank, but if you've got them living in normal tap water then sweet as. Might be something to consider before getting more though. All of the above advice depends on size. Having an adult oscar with a baby Lab probably wouldn't work out, and vice versa. You'd have to give us specific sizes to get a more accurate reply, but you can also just rely on common sense Remember, if it fits in an oscars mouth they'll eat it, or at least chew it.

Oscar will eat Blue Rams no worries. So might want to scratch that. Blue Rams are a small delicate fish, Oscars have teeth and grow to 30cm quite quickly. Oscars are good with sevs, convicts etc (the fish you're getting rid of). A 5 foot tank is fine for an oscar or two depending on volume, min 200L for a single Oscar, but you want good filtration because when he's older he'll make a huge mess when eating. Oscars make great pets, but so do Sevs and even convicts I'd recommend convicts for most oscar tanks, they provide background activity without getting eaten. If you want blue rams I'd recommend getting another small tank. 40-100L etc. (40 is fine for two, but if they're both males you'll need plants etc to seperate the ground area)
  17. The foam wont rott when it gets wet I hope.......
  18. Avoid it. Only use ammonia removal media in emergency situations where water changing is not an option, and only as a temporary measure. If you want to promote bacterial growth use a product like Cycle or StressZyme.
  19. Last time I sent fish I just didn't tell them it was fish. Went via NZ Couriers. Dropped off just before the depot closed for overnight delivery. Only send Mon/Tue/Wed to avoid weekend delays.
  20. I'd prefer two 1200 filters than a single 2200 (althogh they make a 2400 as well) But irrelevant of flow rates, which combination holds the most media? Whichever holds the most media will win hands down (unless space is of consideration).
  21. I used to keep a Jaguar Cichlid. Biggest thing I miss about him was an easy way to get rid of smaller fish that had deformaties. Paticularly weak platties etc that I couldn't have breeding. Fish being eaten by fish is OK with me provided the fish is swallowed and gone in one go. Which is much nicer than the 500 other ways they could die in the wild. Anyway some bad news henward, clown knife was with my parents, when I went back there last night they had already put him to 'sleep' as it were. No suffering, just a quick wack over the bench, gone in a second. To be honest probably for the best, it did not look comfortable at all.
  22. Recommend a common bristlenose. Grow to 10cm, but take a long time, and will live in small tanks no problems. Will sort out your algae and dont need big places to live. Just when you're out of algae, you might need to feed him too Also you need a piece of driftwood, size doesn't matter, just as long as he has some wood to naw on (driftwood, not regular wood cause it rots )
  23. Not only was he definately joking, but you're on candid camera. Act suprised.
