  1. Hello Hannah Welcome to the forum, nice to see another local, we have a great club in Tauranga
  2. Hi All, Just a quick reminder that we're having this month's meeting at Living Art Wildlife Park, Barkes Corner, Tauranga. Saturday 25th August, usual time of 3pm. $8 for entry or $4 for those of us lucky enough to be under 16. See you there! Paul Freeman WBAS President
  3. Welcome to the forums Cricketman, always nice to see another local
  4. If you're passing water from the tank through the tube, I would be reluctant to use copper or brass. Fish don't tend to like copper.
  5. Stainless steel would be my first pick.

    Sexing

Females have an orangey-red tinge to the area under their dorsal fin. They're normally sexable when they're about 50-60mm long.
  9. Hello Gills and welcome to the forum, :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
  10. Yep, I guess 80 microns is .08mm......... will try it in a glass tomorrow and see what happens.
  11. When I've bred them in the past, I've done it in a two-footer with a layer of marbles in the bottom. I've left the parents in the tank for a couple of days then removed them, and soon after that I've seen the fry climbing up the glass sides of the tank. When they're free swimming I gave them decapsulated brine shrimp. But yes, much the same as WCMM and just as rewarding. A real fun fish to breed and quick growing.
  12. The grade they're using is "80", which I think works out to 80 microns? If and when I get it all sorted (and if it works!) I'll post a photo.
  13. It's like sand, just red. Looks cool when dry, as yet haven't wet any to see what it looks like underwater. Might grab some off them tomorrow and see what it looks like
  14. Hi all, HAs anyone here ever used garnet (orange-red-pink sand) as a substrate in their freshwater tank? The reason I ask is we're sandblasting the floors of our Premium Unleaded tank at work (6.4 million litres) and the sandblasters have kindly offered to donate me a couple of bags of garnet. I thought it'd look cool in a cube with some central stones, and maybe some convicts to act as acontrast. Whats everybody's thoughts?
  15. I'm picking the bn's and cats don't like the salt you put in. Catfish in general are real sensitive to salt. How much did you put in, into how big a tank?
  16. Hi Megs, and welcome to the forum. I would put Simon the Shark in with similar-sized fish. My experience with sharks is when they get large they get placid, but we did put ours in with larger fish because a rule of thumb with fish in general is, if their tankmates will fit in their mouth, they will find a way! We had ours in with some of the bigger cichlids. We had him in with some severums and I think a pair of chocolate cichlids (was a little time ago!). Hope this helps. In any case, you shouldn't have any trouble moving him on. Lots of people with other larger fish like them as they make a reasonably placid tankmate. Hope this helps.
