hi, i am useing T8's, and everything seem's to be doing good, although growth could be moving abit faster i guess with T5's,maybe next year. with the hot weather lately,i think a chiller will be next, tank got to 29.4 yesterday. "bit of a worry." shell.

thanx's for that steveA, i am hoping to put in a golden butterfly [addis],when one comes available that is. other fish in tank is a porky puffer, and soon a redtooth triggerfish, fav would be porky,he spikes are erect all the time,he is so cool.i waited 4yrs to get him, never on the lists. how long did your fish live for? seen some sites in the states, puffers seem to have long lifespan(21)yrs one guy had his for. sound's good to me. your tanks will look great when finished, you will have to post a pic. shell.
-
hi, just aquick question for steveA, how does your butterfly and emperor get on. was reading that big angels don't tolerate most butterfly's. but then again two angel's aren't supposed to either,my regal and emperor get on fine. i reckon you can't beat having the best of both world's[reef&fish]. shell.

hi, how many of you's have marine system's, that are just run under fluro's? marine whites/blues. what kinda coral's do you keep? what kinda fishies? etc. shell
-
hi, how many of you's have a fish only system? what fish do you have in them? how big is the tank? etc. shell
-
hi herefishiefishie, those are some beautiful fish, especially the comp's. how's the heat overthere? shell.

sorry to hear about your loss. when ever you use any treatment you should always add extra air line or raise spray bar etc, as most treatment take oxygen out of the water. bigger fish will always show signs of oxygen depivity faster than small guy's. personally i have never had a problem with M/treatment, but have noticed it does put a slimey feeling on glass etc, teatree is usually oil bassed, so that be the reason me thinks. if used properly it seems to do the trick, it is purely for lumps, bumps and pimples and fluffy stuff, cut's and bruises etc. heaps of people seem to think it will fix whitespot it doesn't, will even make W/S worse, as any treatment stresses your fish out. shell's

I Need the REAL names of these fish for the MAF list , Help
craig replied to Billaney's topic in Freshwater
hi billaney, just had a look at your pic's, you have beautiful fish, especially your fighters. a quick question for ya!! on the third page of pic's,what is the name of the cichlid? shelley -
hi, ph of 6.6 isn't bad, except if your a mollie or sword. your neon's would be loving it. try keeping your tank 6.8 after waterchange, then letting it drop slowly 6.5, then do change, depending on what's coming out of your tape that is. chch's water is 7.4 out of the tape,so doing it like that here works well. good luck and hope your fishies get over their spots without loses. shelley
-
hi, tht's cool, what's the ph out of the tape, must be acidic. if that's the case, keep the fruitsalad gravel it will help buff up. never bring ph up to quick, ammonium will turn back to ammonia over 7. shelley
-
hi, if you have a air filter running,it will do the job it would be a good idea to test your tank like caryl said. great your useing aqua+, even when you added the brown gravel it would not do nothing, the fruit-salad gravel would need to be taken out, unless you plan on having swordtails and mollies, problem being that neons don't like that water, there are some really good sites on the net for beginners, you need to learn what fish like what water. but apart from all that now, just treat tank for the whitespot, your ph will be high,so be very very careful on how much you feed, it's very important not to feed to much as you will get ammonia level's. if you could get your ph below 7,6.8 ammonia turns into ammonium which is not toxic to your fish, problem being that your gravel won't allow that to happen. the pet store you got the gravel from should have told you about the gravel, fruitsalad is good for goldfish, sword's mollies, african cichlid's but no good for most tropical's. it is a big possibilty that you could loose some fish, but don't despair it not your fault,it's a beginners thing, we have all at some stage lost fish through misinformation, but you will get nothing but help here. shelley
-
hi, your ph will be high as your gravel is alkaline based. where about's do you live? cos if you have chlorine in your water, and you don't use aqua plus, your two changes aweek will be slowly poisoning your fish/stressed out/whitespot. you shouldn't have to clean filter unless it slow's down, and if it slow's down in a week your overfeeding big-time. did you put a fish in to cycle tank? before you added the rest, if no, reason for fish not happy is putting to many in at once with no real goodies in the tank to cope with the fish load. malkon is great for whitespot and raising temp to 28, but do add extra air, as higher the temp, less oxygen and also treatments take oxygen out of the water. 1 month old tank is still a very new tank, careful on the food and 20% once a week w/c. if this was my tank i would change the gravel to a neutral based,[brown] good luck shelley
-
hi caper, just follow what the bottle say's,25%. if your not happy with water, you could do another 25% later in week. all sound's good  glad your sailfin is on the mend shelley P.S put carbon back in.
-
hi mitch, craig and i are so sorry ,but don't give up on your fishies, did you loose the front's? if yes we will replace them mate. shelley
-
hi, fertilization with iron or CO2 usually gets rid of it.also possible is filtration through peat[for at least 2 months] to lower water hardness and ph. replace too-old fluro's.that's out of a aquarium plant book. also, customers at work reckon florish XL,double dose, get's rid of it. snowman is on to it,as this algae thrives on nitrate-rich,hard water. the CO2 will make the plants take off, they will starve the algae out. in Qteen at work we had a tank that was full of it stuck everywhere,we dropped the ph6.5 and put in peat filter for these tiny little gourami's that were coming in.halfway through the 6wks the algae just started to fall off the walls of tank,by the end it was all gone. shelley

hi ya, malawi's do seem to fight alittle less when tank is over-crowded,to much going on all the time me's think. i had 6-2-2 with appox: 40-50,they still fought, but not as much as they did as the number's increased, alway's change rocks around when adding a new fish, and preferabley add more than one at a time. not to sure about what is available, standard's wise, but there is heaps of breeders around with great selection and good prices. you could just do what most do,just keep adding till tank reaches a balance. good luck and have fun  :bounce:  shelley
-
the CO2 should actually help get rid of the black algae, and don't know if i'd put a flying fox in with gup's,they can get quite aggressive, and scratch the sides of other fish. your plant's will grow heap's,just keep an eye on ph levels they can drop suddenly.
-
hi there, in really good conditions, like not being overcrowded, feed really well. they will grow extremely fast.eg: in japan for example, they can get their fry to almost adult size in 3-4 months,by having huge pond's with a certain ammount of fry,say 20-40 per pond.and they are fed a particular food. shelley
-
sorry to hear that sometimes there's just no explanation!!!!! shelley

hi there, sorry to hear about loss. sometimes bloating is caused by the type of food, waterchemistry, you said that a couple of them looked like they had ruptured towards their butts, which is an indication of food. you also said you not long started up the CO2,nutifin is the yeast one aye!!! can be unstable, are you sure the ph didn't plumit overnight. i'm not sure what the reason for your loss, but check and see what your CO2 is doing at night.a kidney disorder can make them swell like that too. but don't know about 4 at once!!!! STRANGE it is awefully frustrating when you cann't figure something out good luck. shelley
-
that's real cool so glad everything worked out. who knows!!!!!might have a pair. that big break might make-em get busy!!! cheers shelley

he doesn't look very happy give the tank a slightly bigger waterchange, just incase there are toxin's!!! and stop feeding JBL novabits for a while, and the other discus tucker, especially if it is beef-heart in it. just try a JBL flake for a few days. he has a bit of a bulge around anal, could just be food related problem. hopefully ,this is what i would try, but see what others think. good luck
