  1. Hey Swede. This is a great site to be on, learnt heaps here. Good luck with the hobby!
  2. Wow thats a beautiful pic. Very nice Forgive my ignorance but whats "pearling"?
  3. Hehe, Caryl maybe you should get another another tank for their birthday next year, and just keep on adding another one every year until their house gets too full :bounce:

    How many ottos?

:bounce: Have you tried catching them????!!??? Oh man.. I tore up my tanks trying to catch two of them. They're more active at night, but if you have a small school of em they become more active during the day. That came down a website I was reading, but I've tried, and I still cant make out the boys from the girls.
  5. Yup fertilizer about once a week, medium lighting 8-10 hours a day, its a cold water tank tho, so it grows really really really slow. I just use normal gravel and everything, honestly don't do nuthin with them, I think ya just need to find a nice hardy plant which grows in cold water and goldfish don't touch. Don't know what plant would suit you, but I'm sure other people on this forum which will know more about plant selection.
  6. Sorry no idea, dont even know how to tell male from female My friend had goldfish babies, but all they did was leave them in the tank, and they bred like crazy!
  7. I have straight vals in mine, goldfish never touched them

    How many ottos?

Yep I clean the front of the tank, but not the sides and the back, I think I read that article somewhere as well They cost about 15 to 19 dollars NZD, but they end up costing a long more if you include the fatalities that happen, I started with about 8, but they've dwindled to about 4, and I'm thinking about getting some more. They're tricky to get here, cos I make sure they've had them in for more than a month in the tanks, to account for the deaths they have with all the new stock. None of the otos I've ever have ever bred btw, have you had any luck with yours? Cool 8.99 canadian becomes 12 dollars here so it still ends up being cheaper than NZ, but thats the price you pay for living close to the south pole 8)
  9. Im very sorry to hear about your loss Caper, its hard to do but you did the best for him and the other fish in your tank by stopping his suffering, and to stop the spread of any bugs. It sucks when you lose a beloved fish, and nothing ever makes it easier. He was a beautiful fish btw how long had you had him for?

    How many ottos?

Woohoo! Another oto lover! Otos are community fishes and the more the better in a tank, the recommended number is about 6, but it really depends on how much algae your tank has to sustain them. If 2 in each tank are keeping your tank free of algae, maybe thats all that you need. If you add any more otos be sure to check that their bellies are round and fat, thin flat bellies mean that they aren't eating enough, and a really healthy oto will be pooping all the time. You can supplement their diet with algae tablets and greens such as prefrozen courgettes or cucumbers (the freezing breaks the plant cell walls and makes it easier to eat), but some otos refuse to eat anything else but algae like mine, and if yours are like that, they might actually slowly starve in the tank if you add too many. Btw you may have alrady experienced it but they are very sensitive fish and are prone to dying off one they are introduced into a new tank, but the ones that survive live for a long time. Great fish and when you have a group of them they become really active and chase each other. Mine school with the Siamese algae eaters in the tank  I have otos in all my tanks they are awesome fish, although quite expensive here.
  11. Is that how you pronounce chichlid? No wonder ppl look at me funny when I go to the fish shop
  12. Yeah, its definately better if you have 2 heaters in a big tank. I actually wanted to put 2 heaters but I have a 300 watt and 150 heater, and was advised that was overkill so I just stuck to the one heater. I've got 2 digital thermometers reading opposite sides of the tank, and the heater is directly in front of the water outlet in the middle of the tank so i do get even dispersion of the heat. Having said that, it is a 3 foot tank, so maybe thats one of the reasons the heat is pretty even. Not claiming I dont have cold spots though. I'm hoping my fish are smart enough to swim towards the heated part of the tank.
  13. Wow! they look so cute. Well done!!!
  14. Ahhh good point. Just realised I have a reactor not a diffuser  which goes into the external canister, so I definitely need a bubble counter. Thanks suphew, I think I finally get it.
  15. whoaaaaaaa beautiful!! the fish AND the pics. Well done!!! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
  16. Have to depend on the betta I guess, some of my fighters would tolerate any other fish but my male dwarf, they would actually flare up across the divider, but one was completely fine with them. They are both in the anabantoid family, and are quite close cousins and a lot of the readings I've done advise caution with mixing them. You could give it a shot together but if they show any signs of aggression to each other remove them. But then again I dunno with females maybe they'll all form a sorority and get along
  17. I have a diffuser, that goes into the external canister, so does that mean all I need is that setup and a bubble counter? Is the bubble counter a must have for the setup?
  18. Hmm.. what else would you need for a CO2 setup if you get one of these? A diffuser, bubble counter? Sorry people have tried to explain this to me before and I still can't get my head around it....
  19. Aren't mollies brackish? Dwarf gouramis and bettas are related and in the same family, so sometimes they tend to get confused and tend to be agressive to each other. I had confused male betta and a female dwarf gourami try to do the dirty once. But the agression I've heard and experienced was was between male bettas and gouramis, so maybe females being less aggressive will be ok? Swords should be no problem though.
  20. The tannins aint bad, they only stain the tank water a bit brownish. Won't do your fish any harm. Having said my tanks been set up for about 3 months, with carbon in the filter and had the tannin problem for about a month and a half. Only soaked it for about an hour in the beginning though, couldn't wait to set up the tank! Carbon is like 4 dollars for a big bag (I used the aquaclear one in a bag) so its pretty cheap. Just remember to take it out after a while otherwise it just leeches back into the tank. Good luck with the tank! Post some pictures if you can!
  21. The parents are now out of the tank . Hopefully everything goes well. Just wondering if use the gravel cleaner to clean out the tank, or should I just siphon the water out. I'm using water from the main community tank with some aged boiled water. They're not taking to microworms yet, still using liqufry atm, they're about a week and a half old, is that normal?
  22. Heeeey that sounds awesome, how would you go about settin up a resin background for a tank? Could you post some pictures of the finished product. I'm always lookin for ideas
  23. Wow very nice setups and fish. Well done!
  24. I've noticed my cardinals going all pale when they're sleeping, but 2 minutes after the lights go on they start colouring up again. Its real funny, like they rush about for a couple of minutes putting on makeup... kinda like someone I know waking up late for work..
