The rams have done it again, lots of little fry swimming around, just wondering what happens if I remove the parents too early, will the little fry die if they're separated too early? Trying to prevent the massacre that happened last time round :-? Using sponge filter this time so babies wont get sucked in!

Just to add my bit, have a Fluval Tronic heater 300 watts, and its great! had my greedy eye on a Jager but they were out of stock, and the guy gave me a good deal on the tronics. Its 300 watts in a 223l tank, and temp flux is about 1 degree (28 and 29). Just had to say that cos no one had mentioned them yet

Thanks venestus, been to the site before. Will take your advice and post sumthin.

I had a single discus in a tank, it was the most miserable fish I'd ever seen. Fins clamped all the time, didn't eat much, brown coloured all the time - was a blue turqoise but no blue in sight Felt so bad I had to give him up, the guy that bought him told me it became the most colourful discus in his discus collection of about 5 . Anyways if ya do get a single discus be sure to give LOTS of plants to hide, and be prepared not to see it half the time But thats from just my experience. I've got 2 black line flying foxes and they do well with discus IMO.

Is it kinda cottoney greyish white stuff? My driftwood had that but it went away by itself.
-
Aha! Whiptails! Thanks!! It all makes sense now, spent most of last night looking at pics on planet catfish. Lol was pretty far of with loricaria Lata. Thats good they're in with discus at the moment, was worried it was too hot but its all good now.
-
Bought them as Colombia plecos as a pair, but cant seem to find anything about them on google or planet catfish. Closest I can think of is L10? loricaria lata? The boy and the girl. If ya know what they are can ya tell me a bit about them? Like what temps they should live in and what I should try to feed them. Thanks!

Ottos!! Ottos are great! All they do is eat algae! Brilliant little fishies with heaps of character. Siamese algae eaters and ottos are said to be the best algae eaters, SAEs tend to get a little bigger (15cm), and ottos (5cm). One thing tho, ottos are very picky about their water. http://www.wetwebmedia.com/FWSubWebInde ... lusart.htm <-- good info about ottos http://www.wetwebmedia.com/FWSubWebIndex/saes.htm <-- siamese algae eater and the other ones.

Hi was just looking for catfish at Jansens, and came across Colombian Plecos? Not sure what they were so went home to look it up on Google, but couldn't find anythin. Does anyone know the right name scientific or otherwise for them? Same with a brown tiger whiptail catfish, www.planetcatfish.com dun have em with that name..

Yup those are the ones - premanufactured. And hook me up with the ones you have! Will pm you right after this.

OMG just rescued my 2 blue rams from the grip of the diffuser (same blue rams that got sucked up a hose a couple of weeks ago. They managed to wiggle in behind the plastic and when I went to feed em I saw em! Thats after about a hour of looking around the tank trying to find em. I've now pushed the diffuser flat on the glass so hopefully these suicidal rams will keep away. Also found 2 otto remains - *sigh* on the diffuser, that thing is becoming a menace.

Nice work!

Hey yeah when are you coming up next? Ah erm, its looking like 7 discus 2 rams 5 cories 2 SAEs 10 cardinals 3-5 ottos? started off with 8, 3 died, 2 currently MIA  3 definately there. Btws, the ram babies either got massacred by the filter or parents

Hey people, Just noticed a pimple on one of the side of my discus. Its the turqouise on the bottom right. And the best pic of the offending pimple. Any idea what it is?
-
Oh yeah you betcha they have been eating very well. The one with the pimple is ther first to the top of the tank as soon as he/she sees me, and stays there the whole time im close to the tank. He's the biggest turqoise in the tank. Alrighty, so its wait and see? Heard of hole in the head, sounds bad. Hopefully it isn't that. Will try to get a picture of it and post it in the disease section.
-
yeah tell about it, something about mom screams gangsta chick The filter? You think it sucked em up? Dang it, that filter set me back 80 bucks and it becomes a baby killer. Ah well, will get me a sponge filter Hey Ronnie, discus are doin really really good. The turqoises are colouring up. One thing though, one of the turqoises has a single white spot like a pimple. Should I start getting worried?
-
Ah nuts, came back from work today and it look like the brood has been reduced to a few small fishies, guess mom and dad aint ready for parental obligations yet. Ah well better luck next time

Sorry, just being oppurtunistic and wanting to piggyback on this thread. I've been having cloudy water since the tank was set up about 2 months ago, ammonia fine, ph 6, planted with external filter and hang on filter running. I do daily 20% changes but the cloudiness never goes away. Im guessing its bacterial bloom cos its clearer after water changes but gets cloudy after several hours. Do products that remove bacterial bloom (B Clear by nutrafin is the one I have) also kill the bacteria that we want? Fish are perfectly happy and thriving, and giving birth and all that, but the cloudy water bit is really getting to me. I leave the light on for about 14 hours will that stimulate the bacterial bloom as well?

Sorry to hear Aquaman. It has been really really REALLY cold lately. Been looking at my fishtank thermometer at 28 degrees in the morning and been wishing I could go for a swim. If you wanna borrow a heater I've got a spare 150watt one just sitting around

Thanks ryanjury, I'm close to Howick. Thanks for the offer but I think it should be alright, raising BBS for the babies now. Everything is looking really good at the moment, the spiky hair is coming back up for both the parents. Hopefully it'll be a speedy recovery. Lol i was gonna actually put off the moving babies till I got a long airline hose, but my girlfriend insisted that we save the babies straight away from the evil siamese algae eaters, live and learn. Now i just gotta figure out what Im gonna do with a brood of rams!

Pics of the little runts and the slightly traumatised parents. They're a LOT calmer and less busy in their own tank compared to the community one. The black line flying foxes were circling the babies like sharks! Put Mel in the tank today, and bought some liquifry as well, didn't have any microworms at the shops. And raising BBS for em as well.
-
Thanks for that Faran, feelin a lot calmer now. Just hope the head fins heal back to normal. The baby fry are starting to free swim now, so will be headin to the store tomorrow mornin for microworms and melafix. Just a quick question, melafix and meth blue at the same time or one after the other? Sorry to hear about the tetra man, bad luck. Who knows how many ottos I've squished every time I move the driftwood. Hows the rearranging goin? Almost done?
-
*Sigh* I was removing the babies out of the community tank to give them a fighting chance with a hose, and the parents got SUCKED up! One after the other, the male got really stuck and I had to flush him up with warm water!! Anyways panic panic I really really dun wanna lose the breeding pair of rams. They're looking fine in the baby tank now, the top fins are flattened and they've lost a couple of scales, and I'm worried they'll get a secondary infection. I've put in some stress coat, and I'm thinking about getting melafix tomorrow but I'm worried about the babies not reacting to it. Behaviour wise they're great, picking up the babies scattered all over the place, but I'm worried they'll get sick later. Any advice? I'm still pretty shaken over the whole thing.

Hey Faran, all the javas are doing great. They're in the now spawning tank. The swords doing really good too, give out leaf once in while. Ahh ok wait until they swim, alrighty i dun think they have a chance if i left em in the community, the discus will probably make short work of em, bah! Is a 10 gallon tank enuf for the spawn? Thanks for the info and links, still can't believe it its preetty awesome!
-
WOOOHOOO!! My rams have BRED! OMG nothing has ever bred before, not even guppies!! Except for perky snails but they dun count. But uh, now what do I do? They're in a community tank at the moment, when should I start seperating em?
