  1. theres a possible problem - they are in a community tank with bristlenose. Will everyone be ok? Wat i am mainly worried about is that the bristlenoses and the rams mite have an argument overnite and the rams will come out worse off! my male bristlenose can be a bit of a bully at times, hence the worry! Unfortunately i dont currently have a spare tank for them Since the rams laid their eggs over a couple of stones i removed about a third of the eggs and put them in a holder thing you attach to the side of the tank with an airstone. But my previous experiences with trying to raise them myself were not succesful.
  2. Henley Lake has grass carp living in it - released there by teh council to control the weed. If you ever there look out across the water and you will see these monstrous fins moving through the water, a bit like sharks  You wont catch me in that water! I am pretty sure the local council will not mind, if it is just going to dry up, if people remove the critters - can check tho. As for regional council - wat they dont know wont hurt them 8) They cut off the water supply as they say the lake is man-made (cant remember if it was always there and just cleared or if it is man-made) and it lets the stream be higher, not sure for what reason!? It would be better if they leave the water in the lake as once it dries up grass like cooch takes over and it cant be mowed so it just looks messy! thats my opinion anyways
  3. actually its Spark Park in Carterton - its on Belvedere Rd, GoogleMap it. they dont really empty out QE2 park lake anymore Deno. Carterton is about an hour drive south of Palmerston North and about an hour and half drvie north of Wellington. I dunno if you allowed to move the critters but since the regional council doesnt seem to think they are worth worrying about and is happy to leave them to die, i dont see why not. There could be those small native fish i seen people keeping on here, hence why i put up this post. The lake is fed by a natural stream , its just these critters get trapped here and then when the water is blocked off they cant get out. Last year i know some were removed and rehomed elsewhere. Mite go set a fish trap (made with drink bottle) to see what can be caught - more out of curiousity than anything else. I have heard the local council parks and reserve guy is working hard to get it fed by a bore so that when the stream is blocked off the lake will stay full. He hates seeing all these critters just be left to die and the park to look all blah without water in the lake!
  4. that the regional council will (well they do every year) cut off the water supply to a local lake in a park. Apparently last year there were fish, frogs and eels and prolly other aquatic life that died as a result of this water being cut off and consequently the lake drying up. Would people be interested in heading this way to save what can be? If so, I will do my best to keep up with what is happening and find out if it would be possible for people to come down and save what they can.
  5. This is mine: Its around 2mx2m, got a few goldfish in it ranging from fry to 25cmish, the plants are water lillies, water buttercup, some native thing and some other grassy thing (yep really knowledgeable lol) pleez excus the long grass Hadnt done the mowing yet
  6. Apparently you can find turtles living wild up here in the Waiohine Gorge - never seen them myself but have heard the rumours 8) Could go on a wild turtle hunt to incorporate into the wild molly hunt lol
  7. I did do 5th form science! Doesnt mean i can actually do it in practicality  Next time i come thru (in a month or so on my way to Wangas) I will try to remember to bring it
  8. next time i am coming thru to Wanganui and if i have some spare...
  9. how do you test those? Votage from panel; wires from panel to pump and using a 9v battery to test the pump :-?
  10. 11. WOOHOO!! Awesome news Caryl Glad to hear they are doing well. My guys are still producing but am still looking to swap out a few males to increase the gene pool. Was going to put a couple out in the pond to trial but havnt quite got there!
  12. there were some of these for sale at Hutt Pets $17 each when i went in yesterday.
  13. huh thats hilarious! Look at him there just chillin' Maybe i should get some Barry White and candles - my 2 BNs have been together for a few years with no sign of much of anything. Occasionally she will get all fat and he will get all territiorial, then.... nothing. Got another male who will be joining them in about 6months or so, maybe that will spice things up a bit! lol

Ok so got a male blue ram. They have tried a couple of times - first time eggs infertile, second time he ate them once they hatched, third time might be the charm. Also thought it was interesting to note that when he is showing off he turns more of a golden colour rather than strong blue - interesting. He has obviously worked out what girls want
  15. cool! Might give that a go
  16. Well Mr decided to have a snack Maybe third time will be a charm
  17. saw little eyes this morn :bounce: some of the eggs are infertile but about a third have the little eyes peering out Caryl - I just hope Mr and Mrs dont decide to have a snack (I know Mrs won't but not so sure about Mr) as by then they will be little wrigglers **fingers crossed** I must try to get a pic myself, just been sooo busy with work and helping with an amateur stage show that is being held here at the mo. Its called Ladies Night (similar to the movie The Full Monty) its HILARIOUS!!!!!!
  18. yep they are gold in colour - females arent large in size but pretty. Unfortunately I had a male who must have carried a bent back gene so some of the offspring are bent backed I think i worked out which was the culprit and he has been removed, but it still means there is bent back genes in there Hopefully will be able to find some more ribbonfins one day
  19. they have tried again - this time looks like eggs are fertile
  20. is that what they are - ribbonfins!!! got a couple of these and wondered about them - they are soooooo pretty
  21. gutted the eggs were not fertile Maybe Mr Blue just isn't mature enuf
  22. I just went down to give the fish their night-time feed and turn off the lights etc when to my great delight the rams have spawned!!!! WooHoo!!! Mrs Gold and Mr Blue are proud parents of eggs Had to remove the last of the guppies from the tank in preparation of the fry (hopefully). I am letting the parents have a go at being parents since Mrs Gold has proven she can be a good parent once before but I interfered and undid all her good work last time So this time I am keeping out of it!

will try and get some - as we all know it is always a bit of a mission to get a decent pic of fish  The pic above was pretty much a fluke!!! Took prolly around 25 or so that day! *just hope the blue survives his travelling ordeal! He had to travel over the hill (Rimutakas) and thats harrowing enough for most humans!!!!
  25. I do what Lindyloo says - works great!!! Can use them on the handle or off, whichever My bosses wife uses a paper towel to wipe down her tanks. At work we just have a Bristlenose to do the work for us
