  1. u hav a BN in an outdoor pond? How is he doing? I have found that if the pond is well planted, generally the fry will do OK. Natural selection and all If you want to save more of the fry you will need to keep a close eye on the plants, when you see the eggs (which look similar to air bubbles with stuff inside) remove the plant and put it all in a seperate tank/pond. Also keep an eye out for the fry over the next week or two and catch them (a bit difficult, you need to have good eyes!) to put them in the seperate tank/pond. Alternatively you could wait till the goldies have spawned then remove the adults. Letting the lil rascals have the run of the pond 8) Like Alanmin4303 said if you dont select your fish you will end up with random mixes (wouldn't call them "total rubbish"). This can be quite fun to see what you end up with! Could end up with something quite special and unique! Its very fascinating to watch the eggs hatch and the fry grow up Enjoy and best of luck!
  2. Is BluTack safe to use in an aquarium? What other such stuff is safe to use?
  3. Yeah i like this colour too, it is very striking. I am pretty sure the one at the top is the male. i also have 2 females who are the same colour, one of the females is so much like this male that she even has the small black dot in the same place on the tail.
  4. This is my twin bar and her mate. At the top is one of the other platies. I wasn't quick enough to catch her first lot of babies but i have her most recent lot in a seperate tank and there are about 12 Born Sunday nite/Monday morning.
  5. Wish these little Peacocks were available in NZ. They are VERY cute!! How big do they get?
  6. Phewf! Thats good although woulda been cool/interesting to see what the babes woulda turned out like! Thanks for the offer Tsarmina IF i am coming down your way, i dont travel that way very often, I will PM you.
  7. Well done to all those who organised the show To all those who travelled over to the Wairarapa to enter their fishies or to view, a big thanx for taking the time. It appeared to attract quite a number of visitors, me being one of them. Was great to see so many entrants and the wide range of fishies. Really enjoyed it, THANX
  8. Just bought myself a couple of male guppies (havn't been able to find/get any females) and put them in my tank which already has some platties (males and females) and one of the male guppies is really randy  and is trying to breed with the platties. Is it possible for him to impregnate one of the female platties?
  9. I got a female all yellow twin bar (currently pregnant) and a male who has a red fin. Didn't know they were called twin bars, just bought them cos i liked the look of them. They are soo cool My male seems to be monogamous (sp?) with his female as there is another female (not twin bar) but he doesn't seem to be at all interested in her !!
  10. That would be quite cool to see what a mix of the two would look like If anyone has successfully done this, bred a BN and a GBA, and has pic could you post it? i would be interested to see the result
  11. I have a Fluval 3+ and a Fluval 2+ and was wondering (just cos curious) can you swap the bottom half, the half with the filter pads in it, between the two motorised bits? I know that they fit.
  12. My fish Whiskers scales look funny. I went to feed him this morn and he has these patches on him that look kind of silver/velvety (sorry dunno how to explain it very well). He is a very tough fish and this is the first time he has shown any form of sickness in years, even after being eaten by the cat. It isn't cotton woolly looking. He is acting normally enough. The only thing that has been added is a new fish about 3 weeks ago and none of the other 3 fish seem to have anything wrong with them at this time. Should i take him out and put him in a salt bath? Any help would be appreciated
  13. Thanx for that Have noticed that my adult male has been digging out the stones from under his driftwood, is there any reason for this? He is very secretive, unlike the young ones who are out and about most of the time, they are so cute! Also the young BN at work has suckered his/her way up the glass out of the water. It has only done this once but was wondering why it did it?
  14. How old do Bristlenoses need to be before they are ready to breed? I bought some babies and they are currently about 8 weeks old, obviously not old enough to breed yet But am hoping for success in the future.
  15. Forgot to say: I have a bristlenose (BN) in my tank at home with my little goldies. The BN seems to be doing well even though he should be in a tropical tank. My tank is currently about 15 degrees. He has been in there for about 6months. I am moving my BN this week into a tropical tank just cos i dont want to risk losing him. When i get some more BN i may test to see if they will last fulltime in a coldwater indoor aquarium.
  16. I have heard that if you pour vinegar on a rock and the vinegar just flows off without changing colour or frothing etc that the rock is OK to be used in a tank, ie it doesn't leech stuff into the water. Some people say that goldies will only grow to the size of their tank, this is not always true. The 2 goldies at work were small (6cm or so) and started their lives in a 10litre (?) tank. They outgrew that quickly and are now in a much larger tank and have grown to about 15cm! They must be happy in the new tank as they spawned, which was great fun to watch the fry's development! The goldies eat everyting we put in their tank! We can't have snails nor plants as they eat these to death very very quickly! We do put some oxygen weed in their tank every now and then to give them their 'greens'. Same goes for my little guys at home. Best of luck and have fun
