  1. Interesting. I'm not using either but i'd have chosen OZONE over UV because of cost. Someone earlier said Ozone adds something to the water? All it does is add an unstable molicule which can't stay for long. As for the harnful effects of ozone, not in the small quantities used for home aquairums, but its is 'possible'. GT on UR had in my opnion one of the most stunning tanks i've ever seen, he was a hugue fan of Ozone. But like many things it goes in and out of vogue. Layton is trying it because bommer is using it, nothing wrong with wanting to imitate bomber. Who knows, maybee we will ever see some pics. Pie
  2. The reason why their arn't many is because of the chiller cost. For people converting to salt from freshwater a chiller alone is probably work more than any other 1 piece of equipment they have every considered owning. I mean they are 4x more expensive than a c02 setup for plants. Lots of people try rockpool tanks, but ultimatly heat undoes any chance they have of success. If your not prepared to purchace a chiller, forget about it. Pie
  3. As I understand it, the bulbs have a very short lifespan (usefull life span). What are the advantages over OZONE? Disadvantages (other than cost)? Pie
  4. Suphew used some TUNZE zeolite rock in his tank. Overnight water clarity improvement. So the zeolite rock makes a big difference to water clarity regardless as to the presence of ZEOvit. An obsersvation. Pie

    Skimmer test

The whole project was a waste of time, it had nothing to do with the people, it was doomed to failure from day one and the best thing we could have all done was collectivly refused to partake until MAF devised a more sensiable process. If anyone has to part with money it should be those who benifit from the hobby financially. Its the people selling the stock who stand to get something out of it, so it stands to reason they should be the ones who are paying for it. I enjoy this hobbie and most of the people i've had the good fortune to meet since I started. But its not a life obsession for me. ? Comments like this make me angry. I've written articles for the FNZAS magizine, I partake on this site, I invite people into my home and loan them my books and magizines. Just because you sell equipment/livestock for money doesn't mean you support the hobby, it means you feed from it. Pie

    ASW test results

I paid about $105 for 5kg from APS. Don't bother any more, my reactor is loaded. Pie

    Skimmer test

Didn't you have one 2 years ago? A DIY becket you had made and ran that for a while? I remember you posting pics telling us all how well it worked? I have owned 2 skimmers, the first was a Deltec, the 2nd is a Deltec. If I ever decide to upgrade (Reef, sell me the 1004!) it will be to a Deltec. Although I have no experance with others, i've seen them in operation and helped lots of people set them up. None of what i've seen would make me change my mind and move away from the Deltec. Piezola

    QT

I am trying to rid my refugium of macro algae with little success. Its tanking over and driving me insane. Can't wait for it to be gone forever. Pie
  9. I load the photo into Photoshop, crop as required and re-size for posting on the internet. If required I will adjust the brightness, contrast, sharpness or hue to hightlight the subject or to adjust the photo to reflect what it looks like not what the camera defaulted too. I use manual white ballance. Boundaries? Post what you like, no matter how much you doctor your photos the tank will look the same. I'd rater see photoshoped pictures than no pictures at all. There is so much effecting the way the tank looks, blue lights make corals irrodesent, large watt lights make photos over expose, I see no harm in doctoring the photos, your not fooling anyone anyway. *dig* I'd rather see a doctored photo of your own tank than post a pic of someone elses tank insinuating its yours *end dig* Pie
  10. Everyone of my photos has had the photoshop treatment. Pies
  11. 400's are awesome but you may have heat issues. You need a compromise between spread and power. I'd not go back to 250s after having the 400s. Pie
  12. Having dived in many places around the world, I would have to say that the Poor Knights rate very highly. We hope to dive them again early in 2006. Also its worth diving the Wikato and Tui, wrecks just outside of Tutakaka. Sorry to hear about all that Fay! Stick at it, when you finally get to dive out there you will realise that it was worth all the heatache. We have been in Tutukaka for 7 days and not been able to dive once, so don't think its just you, it happens to us all at times. Regards Piemania

    New Reflectors

The plans I got from Joeblog were enough to get Ben to make them, but some of the measurements were off a little. The guy made them from thin foil like material, so he could bend it a little to get it to fit toether, we used ,7mm aluminimum so had to be spot on. Also Ben took the design a little further, and remove some of the joins in favor of folds, so insted of being made of 13 shapes, mine are made from 8 shapes, replacing joins for folds. We could have actually removed more joins in favor of folds (thus no rivits and more reflection) however it would have ment MAJOR inefficiencies when cutting from the source sheets and more wastage, pushing up the costs significiantly. This is a compromise if you will, the price point. Pie

    New Reflectors

Well after looking at the Lumenarc style reflectors some time ago I had written them off as being far too expensive. A few months back TM showed us some reflectors he had welded up out of steel. WOW I though, maybee we can DIY something. Then Joblog offered to send me through the plans (DIY) for how to make your own lumenarc style reflects from a thread on RC that was pulled (for infringing on copyright or some such nonsence). I then took the rought plans supplied by Joe blog and decided that I am too dumb to figure it all out. So next stop, a friends friend (cousin of Derecks) who is an engineer by trade, a perfectionist and has some math skills to boot. An arangement was met, favor for favor. Last week I recieved the 1st of 4 reflectors. DVD case provided for scale. They are made from 98% reflective aluminimum and are a stunning piece of engineering. Thanks to TM for inspiration, Joeblog for basic template, Suphew for faciliting the deal, Ben the engineer for actually building the things. Hope to get them over the tank at Christmas time. Pie
  16. How much eh? There are people on here who were confident the could setup for less than 1k (thats $1,000.00). Have a chat with them (Ira springs to mind) about what and how things worked out in reality. I suspect 4k is a little on the shy side, but there are so many things to consider. Once they are up and running there is electricity, bulb replacement, supliments and live stock to consider. Notice I didn't mention feeding, it costs so little its hardly worth mentioning. I suspect its like expensive European cars, they don't put the prices of them in the windows, because if you have to ask... Pie

    Hermit crabs

They die. Sometimes after a week, sometimes after a few weeks. Long term survivability in reef tank tempratures is 0. Pie
  18. Do you think its possible to have 1 thread on this site that doesn't revert into constant arguements about sandbeds. Its all been said, DSB work regardless of what Layton has said previously, its a fact, this tank is just one of many that proves it. We have heard both sides of the "arguement", its time to change the record. Pie
  19. Good bargin shopping Duke. The MHs are awesome, glitter lines are awesome. Heat however is NOT awesome What size and config are the T5s. I may be keen, PM some prices etc if ya like. Pie

    how high??

My tank is 730, and its a pain. My old tank was 650, was a pain. 600 is the sweet spot, form comfort and reasonable lighting options. Pie
  21. WOW! What a surprise a nice looking SPS tank and a DSB!!! And I was told it couldn't be done... Pie
  22. I did an experiment with my fungia, which I burried half in the sand, and removed 5 days later. The tissue died, and about 4 weeks later it was obvious I had babies. Many have died (due to me and my cleaning maganet) but I think I will get 5 babies from it, all a little bigger than 5c pieces at the moment. The tissue that died has re-grown, and only a pie wedge where the new babies is, is left exposed. Pie
  23. Being Cruel to animals is bad. However, I think many members of this forum have been a little rude and unfair. He is not doing it to be intentionally cruel to these animails. What is the minimum amount of water per fish before it stops being cruel? Is not ok for cup per fish, but 2 cups per fish is OK? Keeping clowns in a nano is OK? No-one gave Briananemone a hard time for his, would be the same as us living in a room the size of our bathroom (with someone else!) for ever, isn't this cruel? Many of you here, myself included, have killed our fish. Think of the fish that you have starved to death, or the ones that have slowly suffocated whilst drying out on the carpet, or the ones you have frozen or cooked alive or what about the fish you have poisoned with flatworm exit and other medications. Hypocrits. Pie
  24. I have one for freshwater. Its OK for what it is, WAY overpriced IMO. Not sure how it would go in saltwater, like most things with metal, not very well i would expect. Pie
