  1. I've read both. Coral is a surprisingly good magazine, easy to reccomend it. Marine World is a fairly poor publication, light on info, hight on adds, i stoped buying it but have access to read it for free, but I don't bother. Pie

    Stream Light Sensor

Not using the nighttime sensor at the moment, no reason other than i'm not. I don't think its important one way or the other, but does give some options if you choose. Cool gadget rating of 7/10, practically rating of 2/10 Pie
  3. Yeah, the same reason corals don't grow in out water. Its colder here cause the sun is futher away. Skylights could be used to supliment the tank (watching it at night would be difficult), but the logistics make it impractical for most. Pie
  4. Ohhh yeah thats the other thing that I dislike about the Laguna, they don't come with die tapped fitting so you can screw presure pipe into them, you have to ghetto something up because it only has bayonet style push fit connectors on them. Piemx
  5. As at Monday this week: PH = 8.27 (pinpoint) PO3 = 0ppm (salifert) NO3 = 0ppm (salifert) kH = 8.4 (salifert) Ca = 440 (salifert) Mg = 1320 (salifert) Salinity = 1.025 (refractometer) Temprature 27 Pie
  6. SteveA has 4 or more ehiems that have been running 24/7 submerged in saltwater for over 11 years... Pie
  7. Ehiem all the way. No issue with the Laguna, but the Ehiems have a proven track record, and other than price you'd struggle to find many people with bad experances. Pie

    Reefs Reef Tank

Looks like a stunner to me. Hard not to be impressed with that, awesome. I'd love to see another full tank shot. Pieman.
  9. Good job on the DIY weirs. I am impressed. Love to see some more pics. Pie
  10. Feelers - correct, it requires a catalyst to react (water). So you can hold it in your hand without any worries (its just dry granulated, like salt), but if your hands sweaty... As for putting it on your tounge. i'll give you $10 for every 10seconds you can hold a tea spoon full on for... I'll give you $100 for every 10 seconds if you do it whilst gargling a mouthfull of Coke. Pie
  11. The Neptune III supports multiple probes and configurations of probes. As for advanced settings, I would say it would be fair to say the Aquacontroller can do 90%+ of what the IKS can do, without the cost of all those ad-in models and extreme prices. Its an outstanding unit. Check the prices from SeaMe, he will do a great deal and freight for free to NZ. If you have X-10 paranoia, go hard wired, or use a combo of both. Pie
  12. Aye its one of the largest project threads on RC, its poped up on this forum more than once. I especially like the sand. Nice acro colours too, must be photoshoped Pie
  13. SteveA - Surley you can't coun't the 1500 watts of heating into your costs. I have 900 wattsof heating, and don't remember seeing my heaters on in the last 6 months (other than at water change time). Pie
  14. *yawn* The aquacontroller is fine, the reviews and feedback from people who use them are very complimentry. You can buy an Aquacontroller now, how long has your computer been comming Layton? Not giving you are hard time, but would I trust my tank into the hands of uni kids project? I wouldn't, not because its you, just like the idea of some proven brand and support. X10s can be found for about $32.00ea, so not sure how that equates to $1000.00. I'd be dissapointed of ANY computer couldn't do that. Based on the prices of other computers that are available, its got to be at the top. The AC III would suit me and my needs, large tank requiring multiple probes, remote sump, heating and cooling, remote access and control. The IKS would be able to do the same thing, but almost 5x the cost and then the added headache and mess of hardwired power. Either way, unless I am given one i'll stick with what i've got. Pie
  15. Approx $380.00. 2400 watts on my reef... Pie
  16. You can buy X10 here in NZ, its fairly cheap if you shop about, but when I was looking I could get it much cheaper from .au. The ACIII is outstanding for functionalty, Layton has some specific needs that I wouldn't think would be important to most of us. I'm not buying one, nor do I sell them but i'd be hard to beat the AC3 for features and price. Remember it takes more than just a computer to controll TOPOFF (you will need sensors and peripumps and or solinoids in addition), for ALK same deal, you will want solinoids and PH probes, heating/chiller is easy, as is lighting. You can internet ready the III, telnet etc, so no issues on controlling remotely. Although this does bring in the fear of having your fish tank HACKED. "All your coral are belong to me" Pie
  17. Chimera - My experance with Zeovit is that as the nutrients reduce (or iron is added depending on who you talk too), the coral finds its colour. The colour on the tips your talking off probably has little to do with Zeovit and more than fact that new growth hasn't had time to be populated with xzoo yet. Pics! Pie
  18. I looked seriously at the Neptune, but cost put me off. X10 is the only way to go for many setups (especially remote sumps), unless you want cable nightmare. Reviews are good, features of the new version are awesome, price is 'ok'. In the end I just brought a digital temprature controller and use timers for my lights... Pie

    Ich

Sorry to hear of everyones losses, suxor big time. Interesting, i've not added anything to my tank since the last debarcle about 6 months back. I've noticed my blue tang with some white spot over the last few days, nothing major, but its there. Ich season? Say its no so... Pie
  20. When I worked at Sea Lords, I saw a guy who has spill3e caustic soda on himself. He squealed so loud, I can still hear it. He came back to work about 15 months later, his ear was melted into his head, 3 fingers on his right hand had fused together, one of his nostrals has been closed, his dick (sorry) has melted into his leg etc etc etc. He slipped (its very slimy) and a hopper boiled over him, NASTY NASTY NASTY. Pie
  21. We got Draino a few weeks back for a bathroom drain, Pak'n'Save, $8.55 a bottle. Pie

    Clownfish

NOTE: I guess that its not incest to have sex with yourself, and i'm not sure if that would make it homosexual sex technically or not. A question best answered by Jerry Springer "so.... you cloned yourself to have sex with yourself". Either way, offspring is impossible (unless you belive in god, and he wants it to happen, cause he can make anything happen). Pie

    Clownfish

You'd have to ask an expert but I am pretty sure that a clone has to be the same sex... Pie
  24. Ghostface - Notice Reef answered your 2nd question, not the first. Their allowance state with MAF has little to do with their availability. They have been imported and offered for sale in NZ in the past. They were quite expesnive though, over $40.00ea. Pie
