  1. 71% - what is plastic sex. Well?
  2. Hi DubbieBoy welcome to the forum Here's an idea, get some fish that spawn readily in a comm tank but then the fry/eggs get eaten. Then its a case of 'you don't want the poor wee buggers to get eaten do you'? ... Just one more tank will solve this problem, honest...
  3. Try this http://www.maf.govt.nz/biosecurity/impo ... ic.all.htm
  4. Yep, there was a post recently that had the web address somewhere on MAFs site I think

    hey

Welcome to the forum catfish_dude. Hope this helps to balance the numbers
  6. I cycled my 3' 1.5' 1.5' with three guppies. After a week - 10 days bought eight more fish (6 zebra danios, 1 chinese algae eater 1 sailfin plec. Never experienced any deaths. I would think 2 fish would be enough to establish enough bacteria so that you could add a few more fish, just not your tanks total capacity. Although the water here is absolutely awesome, used to be bottled here and sold all over the world! Great water prob means you can get away with a lot, eg higher NH4+ and NO2- levels (going by my friends tank maintenance anyway!)
  7. pH 6.75 and pH 9, wow 9 how'd you get it that high. I think Chch tapwater water is generally in the region of 7.4, so do you have something like peat in your 2footer and 10M NaOH in the 4 footer  !
  8. Because I was under the impression feeding live foods can help promote faster growth. If they are good to feed for long enough it will definitely be worth it because it'll simply be more fun than feeding crushed dry foods or fry formula:) .
  9. How long would BBS be useful for feeding to swordtail fry as at the moment I don't want to try to grow the BS up? Cheers, Kriber
  10. Did you see them at Organism? They were selling some for $5, a couple of weeks ago.

Same Genus different species. Swordtail - Xiphophorus helleri Platy - Xiphophorus maculatus and Xiphophorus variatus. I wonder if swordtail/platy hybrid offspring can produce fertile young, because that would kind off make them the same species wouldn't it?

    Plants

Hey no stereotyping  My pair (well male + female lately) of kribs don't do much damage to my plants at all. Guess it depends on the individual fish and what greenery is around
  13. Ok then! Went to catch some freshwater shrimps just now (got plenty) and I also caught what i thought was 3 bullies. The large one with red tipped fins jumped out of the ice cream container when i went to put more water in (silly me) but no worries as i thought i would only take 2 bullies to see if they can survive at 20-22 degrees. Got home and noticed one wasn't a bully, it doesn't have the 2nd dorsal fin like gobies do and it doesn't have a single dorsal fin near the back like inanga. It doesn't resemble a smelt to i think nor any of the other fish on http://www.nzfreshwater.org I wonder what it is? Sorry can't post any pics I'm not in the digital age  Anyway just thought i'd share about my less than 30min fish catching adventure
  14. It says 18,000 written across a capital 'K', must just be to confuse ppl. like 'cool change 100' orange drink (not 100% at all ) On the side of the box it has a figure showing 2800K Flora-Glo, 4200K Sun-Glo, 6700K Life-Glo, 18000K Aqua-Glo, 18000K Power-Glo and 'no number' Marine-Glo. Colours are reddish, yellow, grey/white, darker pink, lighter pink and blue respectably. As long as it makes the tank look better I suppose :-?
  15. Oh and thanks for that info Pies .
  16. As the light wouldn't stay constant long enough to get the hood back on the tank (the slightest bump would send it flicking again) I went out yesterday to buy a bulb. Bunnings biggest hardware store in Chch - couldn't see any 3ft tubes. Riccarton lighting - 3ft only available in cool white, but they could have ordered 'daylight' ones in. Mastertrade closed. I ended up buying a bulb from the pet store. A Power-Glo 18000K (the pink one to replace the old one). Cost a bit but I plan to by a cheap 'daylight' bulb from a hardware store soon. This new bulb really made a difference, the tank looks a like crisper and cleaner and I intend to replace the white bulb soon. Can these 'pink' bulbs be bought from anywhere other than fish shops? Whats the deal with 18000K bulbs? Cheers, Kriber
  17. Printed out Pegasus' post and went to work. Final score Pegasus 1, light problem 0 Thanks very much Pegasus The tubes are slightly dark at the ends, how dark do they go before they don't
  18. Haven't got a new bulb yet! I thought the starter would be somewhere else in the unit. Surely the starter doesn't need to be replaced everytime a bulb is?? The unit is about 11 months old, and has been operating at 12hrs a day most of this time.
  19. Hi all, This morning I noticed one of my fluro tubes was flickering, it's sort of constantly lit at the ends though. This is a sure sign that its needs replacing right? Swapped the tubes around and this bulb still flickered while other worked fine in the 'old flickering slot'. Anyway its a 3ft Aqua One lighting unit and the bulb was one of those pink ones that are meant to enhance fish colour (the other was a plant growth tube). Do the different types really make a lot of difference, the plant growth ones sure do seem a light brighter. What bulb should i go for? Also what were the makes/numbers of the suitable bulbs that are available from hardware stores etc. I'm in Chch, well close enough really Your help and/or opinions are most welcome BTW I just noticed it seemed to shut itself off if only one bulb was in the unit, put the 'worn' one back in and the good one is working again (the tubes can be operated independant of one another as well). Is this normal?
  20. Weren't the police talking about monitoring high power users, in an effort to catch those using strong lighting to grow certain plants? Got some special plants in that marine tank of yours?
  21. Feed slim bottom dwelling fish (ie EELS ) frozen bloodworms in a narrow tube so speed merchants like zebra danios don't get all the good kai (they can have dry food!). The gravel vac worked ok, the eel even got in the narrow ~10mm end where the hose attaches, but the kribs + others got in too. Plan B tonight i feed some bloodworms in about 10cm of 12mm canister filter tubing (no-one else could fit in there! Worked sweet now no need to worry that 'fussy' isn't getting fed. On the same note, if you care more for your cories etc try feeding them your more expensive frozen foods buried under a layer of gravel on a saucer or something, It might work let me know (havent tried it!)
  22. $13 Bother! It was marked as $34.90!! Not to worried about my 5 remaining neons, someone else seems to find them quite delicous probably one of my kribs or the Marliers julie that I traded in (swapped one killer for another eh?). Did the store that you saw them at have quite a few or just a couple? Kriber
  23. Hi all I bought an eel yesterday. Apparently its a Ladderback spiny eel from Africa. Can't seem to find any info or pics on the net. http://www.fishbase.org/Photos/PicturesSummary.cfm?ID=10071&what=species; this seems to be the only pic of anything that resmbles it. I'd be interested to hear if anyones' seen any for sale or has any experience keeping them. Its ~12cm long and 'should' grow no longer than ~20cm, is peaceful (won't attack neons at night) and isn't shy at all, rarely hiding in caves. Oh and its one awesome fish!! Cheers, Kriber
  24. Have any of the frogs that are available in N.Z. been bred in captivity (by hobbiests?)
