  1. Ahh, my Kribs must be ready to spawn again soon (look at the date of this post, damn at least another week  ). Hey Cat, how long did/do your Kribs take between spawns if they eat them? I've read about 2 weeks. Also what fish can successfully eat the fry? In my comm. tank with the kribs I have; neons, cherry barbs, zebra danios, marliers julie, oto's, swordtails, a guppy, siamese flying foxes and a sailfin pleco - yeah that's it! It's just I thought the parents could defend them against most of the other tank occupants until I read that 'wimpy' neon tetras work quite successfully in teams to distract then feed on Krib fry. Any ideas? Cheers, Kriber
  2. I agree , but in my 3' i've already got 3 oto's and 1 sailfin pleco which fortunatively stay out of the kribs way. When I used to have fish a while ago my bronze cory keep getting its tails nipped by the solitary krib a had, bad luck for the krib as 'Cattie' was my favourite so krib was disposed off. Does anyone out there keep kribs with cory cats and how do they get along?
  3. Hmm, I'm an idiot I didn't answer your question, I prob. answered whether their any good or not  Put simply no you don't need one
  4. There is no easy answer to this, some people will swear by them others will swear at them . I used to have one when I kept fish 10yrs ago (i'm only 22!) but now I don't. Some reckon they interfere with plant roots, try reading around this forum I bet you'll get lots of info.
  5. Do you want absolutely NO hardware to be visible in your tank? What type of filtration are you going to run? If you use a canister filter you can get an external thermal heater (ETH) that runs off it, or if your rich a thermofilter. With one of these setups the only artificial things in your tank would be the filter intake tube and the outlet tube (which sits right at the top and is hardly visible). My friend thought I was stupid for forking out for a ETH but I wanted minimal clutter in my tank, so if you want no clutter, go for it - it will look sweet. For cleaning rocks I use a brush and elbow grease then boil them for about 20mins to kill off any unwanted pathogens.
  6. Howdy KerryO From what I've read silicon is the only thing mentioned for sticking rock formations together. Make sure you get aquarium silicon though. Are you sure? You seem to be going to a lot of trouble just to keep the above mentioned fish, although it will be YOUR tank so of course it should look the way you want. I read somewhere that you should choose what fish you like first and then see what hardware you need, sounds like a good idea. You'll read everywhere people saying get the biggest tank you can afford (usually because larger tanks have more stable water parameters) but seriously consider it as once you've got say a 3' set up you might not be able to get that 4' or 5' setup, that's where I am at Good luck, I hope you enjoy your time here. 7. It might just be a coincidence but I had only been feeding dry and freeze dry foods since I've had my tank and very recently I've fed frozen bloodworms, about twice in the last week and now the kribs spawned - concidence or not? I hope so It would be good to have a trigger to help induce the kribs to breed I'm in no real rush, I was considering putting the breeding tank in the garage (its currently in my room - air pump and all  ) so I would forget about it (you know the watched pot never boils ) as I spend to much time looking at my fish! One thing about zd's they spawn easy. Put them in breeding trap the size of a supermarket basket at 10:30pm one night, spawned the next day just after 8:00am. Waiting 2 months will seem like ages, although they did spawn in the comm. tank after about 1 month, still its a lot longer than 10hrs to wait Cheers Blueram P.S. I've read that rams and kribs don't get on, and rams were the last fish I wanted for the comm. tank (yeah right!) have you kept them together? Kriber, over and out
  8. Thanks Caryl for your response to my terracota pot query 50, 25, now I'm down to just 2 krib eggs unless they've moved them elsewhere and are not guarding them. I've heard they will spawn again in about 2 weeks if they eat all their eggs the 1st time, but I'm wondering how many times they will spawn every 2 weeks before they take a rest? Does moving the adults to a breeding tank disturb them so much that it could take a month or more for them to settle down? What's happened for some of you guys? I can't move them yet as the Breeding tank is full of zebra danio eggs (i wish only about 80 viable eggs out of approx 170, damn fungus) so it will be around 6 weeks til I can try them out in there. I'd rather try and breed kribs but I owe it to the zd's to give them another chance after I probably poisoned the 1st batch  Kriber
  9. Hi all, Does anybody know whether ordinary orange terricotta pots leach any dyes or other possibly harmful chemicals when placed in an aquarium? I cut a pot straight down the middle to form 2 'golden arches' , no wait orange arches one of which I cut the bottom off so it has two entrances, this exposed more unfinished surfaces than an uncut pot would have although the pot wasn't sealed with any waterproof cpds. Any ideas if this will be safe for caves in a breeding tank? Or should I have purchased some other type of pot that didn't cost $0.89 from The Warehouse, maybe the next size up $0.99! Later alligators, Kriber

    Black eyes

Anyone know why sometimes the 'whites' of fishes eyes are black? I noticed it in a guppy once but couldn't remember if it changed back to white or if that was another individual. Just before I noticed both of my swordtail fry have 'white' eyes whereas earlier one of them had 'black' eyes. Maybe they've been giving each other the bash
  11. It (tetracycline) isn't just one type of molecule, there are various types that all share the same basic skeleton (Four fused 6-membered rings) eg chlortetracycline, oxytetracycline, tetracycline, demeclocycline, methacycline, doxycycline, minocycline and undoubtably others. In the fish trade any used may well just be referred to as tetracycline or even by a trade name. For tomorrow make sure you have read chpt's 3-5 and be prepared to discuss in class. What brands are you using?
  12. I hope mine don't fight, at the monent they seem quite preoccupied chasing other fish away although they don't chase them very far. They did both leave the cave unguarded when I just fed them but all the other fish are too busy with the food as well, its quite funny to see neons get in amongest it with the kribs and marliers when I stick some freeze dried tubifex worms to the side of the tank Can you tell yet if you get predominately one sex in your batches of fry? I've read the pH and hardness of the water might determine the sex of the fry.
  13. I currently have a sore neck from watching my kribs spawn in a little cave in the comm. tank. Other than the parents the only fish that might feast on the eggs are two marliers julie which are both smaller than the kribs and a Sail-fin pleco/red gibbiceps (Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps) which is probably about 10cm. Neon tetras, zebra danios, cherry barbs, swordtails, oto's and siamese algae eaters wouldn't trouble the parents would they? And after all the trouble I went to today to saw a pot in half to make some caves for when I was going to put the Kribs in the breeding tank! The little buggers beat me to it!

    Hi I'm Merlin

Good work Merlin I hope all goes well with raising them to adult size.
  15. Is replying to your own post a sin? Had another look at the eggs and they'd all grown! Must be osmosis at work
  16. Breeding zebra danios part two. Put 3 zd's in a swanky breeding trap last night and this morning their spawning BUT the eggs are arriving in two different sizes :-? . I'm just wondering if the smaller eggs will likely be still viable? The smaller eggs are probably just over half the diameter of the larger ones, the eggs I got from the 1st spawning were of this larger size. Just realised I put 2F and 1M in their (couldn't catch any others quickly) would the different size eggs come from the 2 different females? Later all, have a good weekend I've got to go do my sole day's work for the week - damn students!
  17. I was sold (or brought!) mondo grass the other day, got the green one although there was a black variety as well - I thought I was buying an aquatic plant
  18. Thanks Midas, It is just an ordinary hose, sounds like you might have solved my problem! I'm going to put some fat and thin zebra danios in my breeding tank tonight, so as long as they stay away from whisky and hose water hopefully they'll be alright! Cheers, Kriber
  19. Howdy Blueram Changed about a third then another third later on, this meant about half of the original water was changed. pH is normally 7.4, I forgot to take the water sample I'd got with me when I went to the LFS  . Water around here comes from the aquafers and its not chlorinated. Cheers for your input , Kriber
  20. WCMM sell for as little as $1.95 In CHCH so I wouldn't think you'd get much for them. I think shops take them once their big enough to survive in a comm. tank. About a week ago I was asking the same questions as you (regarding zebra danios). Here's some advice - don't worry about how much to sell them for until you have some to sell, because fry are vulnerable things, I lost ALL of my zebra danios on Wed and Thurs so now I have to start again. Hope you have better luck than me
  21. You will be once their egg sacs have been absorbed when its up to YOU to feed them
  22. No only expensive silk shirts will work. Kidding, I'd imagine they'd work fine.
  23. That's right. I used a few layers of mutton cloth to strain the yolk through
  24. Good work Aqua Look after them and stick to what works!
  25. During a typical water change after syphoning my 2ft breeding tank containing 100+ zebra danios I thought I'd use the water in the hose outside as its normally a bit warm on a hot day. Normally I just use coldwater from the tap as its prob around 18 degrees. Anyway the water I added didn't raise the tank temp. noticibly although I did add it quite quickly. Then less than an hr later (prob. 10-15mins) the fry started dropping like flies, and over the space of 4pm Wed to midday Thurs they had all succumed to my incompetience  (or  ) I did quite a large water change but this probably only delayed the poor fellows plight. The fry had been free swimming for about a week, during which time none had died so I thought I was over the most difficult part. Other factors that I thought might have been the cause of death are 1. fouling from apple snail waste (fed lettuce) or the egg yolk mix (I syphoned daily) 2. A red alga becoming more prominant 3. I hadn't fed powdered flake for a few days alongside the egg yolk ( I used powdered vege tablets instead, for variety). The reason I think it was the tap water was because they started dying so soon after I added it. Any ideas or thoughts anyone? :-? BTW 2 swordtail fry which I rescued form the comm. tank on Sun survived in the same tank. Happy fishkeeping, Kriber
