  1. Just got back from Redwood After reading Macka's post about the oto's I just had to get some (my tank does have a bit of algae on the glass so I really needed them honest ) Cost me $4.90 each, much better than $14.95 that I've seen them at other stores. I bought 3, the 3rd one came from some random tank with a couple of livebearer young that he didn't know about which I only noticed when wandering about while waiting for the guy to get some frozen food from out back . So there are at still 2 left but they're supposed to be getting some more in about 5 weeks. Later all
  2. Hi Whetu, I recently had Zebra danios spawn in a new breeding tank. The eggs were scattered over the whole tank but in higher numbers in and below a low plastic plant, prob. 5cm high 20cm wide and maybe 8cm deep. P.S. you might want to rethink marbles, they work but are a pain to remove! Next time I'll prob. try some form of netting. Good Luck
  3. Hi Robert I'm not completely sure of the name of the place its either; North Canterbury Sand and Shingle or North End Sand and Shingle. My mate didn't have any change so he got it for free! I reckon they just charge a token amount for their morning tea kitty Its on the right side of State highway 1 north of CHCH but south of Woodend, just past Pineacres if you know that. Kriber
  4. Based on some software I've got (Fish Tank Data Version 1.20 - from the net) 37kg of gravel will give you 3 inches of coverage, it doesn't mention the size of the gravel though I used less than 3 full buckets (9 x 3 = 27Litres), maybe 22ish L of gravel which covers my 90 by 45 to a depth of about 2 inches ~ sloping from 3inches to 1 inch. 5. I got my gravel from the local sand and single place (they've got their own quarry there I think). They sell trailer loads for $20 and I paid $2 for what I needed. Apparently this place supplies brown gravel to Redwood Aquatics - one of the LFS Perhaps you could enquire as to where your local garen shops get their gravel from and go direct to the supplier. Good luck
  6. Thanks for the info, a double moderator response! Cheers guys. And if the ramshorns get to prolific I could always pay way to much (approx. $22) for a snail trap, but I think ajbroom's digital method sounds good enough
  7. Good job Goldie , hope you can raise some to a saleable size then you can lie to your husband telling him their worth a fortune and that the hobby is finally going to pay for itself
  8. My problem of fry and eggs getting eaten has been moderately stopped cause I bought a 2ft tank just for breeding Still I bet there is still a lot of eggs and fry that go missing in my comm. tank. Yes mother, the 2nd tank will be my last while I still live at home!
  9. Yeah got the marbles out the day I spotted the eggs (probably the day after the spawning). Conservatively counted only about 40 fry, I'm hoping i'll get around 60, but then I suppose the fry will experience a certain mortality rate. The other day i thought there was between 150-200 eggs so who knows what i'll end up with. Thanks for the info yet again , Kriber
  10. Howdy all, bought some ramshorn snails yesterday and was wondering what their eggs look like as this morning I noticed 8 and 14 little clear circles within a larger oval shape about the size of a little finger nail. Also would apple snails prey on small eggs and possibly even fry as I was thinking of putting them in my breeding tank as I heard their faeces are a good source of infusoria. Cheers, Kriber over and out
  11. Pegasus, Is it common for zebra danios to have their heads (only) stuck in the eggs for quite a while, even when in this state they are capable of sort of swimming around? It just doesn't seem right. Also how long does it take for all the eggs that will hatch to hatch? Some had hatched by Sun. morning and some still haven't hatched. Cheers, kriber
  12. Interfecus sounds like he/she? knows a bit about chem/phys, I've been scared into shutting up and sticking to biol as it is from this point of view which I best understand things! I was only trying to help.
  13. Its all coming back to me now! In theory even completely pure water contains 1x10-7 or 0.0000001% with what is best represented as H30(+), the hydronium ion and 0.0000001% OH(-), the oxide ion. H20 + H20 --> H30(+) + OH(-) This happens spontaneously So even pure water should conduct electricity, it just does it extremely poorly. Taking the negative of base 10 of 0.0000001 = 7, this is why the value of 7 is the neutral pH, the H30(+)'s and the OH(-)'s are both present as 0.000001% of H20. There that's all I promise
  14. Are far as I can recall from uni chem the hydrogen atoms in water are slightly positively charged, and the oxygen atom slightly -vely charged. When normal salt i.e. NaCl dissolves in water the Na+ is surrounded by the oxygen atoms (slightly -ve) from H2O and the Cl- is surrounded by 1 of H2O's hydrogen atoms. I think this is what makes H2O a polar molecule as opposed to something like a symmetrical hydrocarbon eg. CH3 - CH2(n) - CH3. Water is sort of a < or L shaped molecule as opposed to the tetrahedral shape present in many larger hydrocarbons which balances the electrostatic charges out thereby making them non-polar. (you know, like dissolves like - its easier to wash paint off your hands with turps rather than with water). Shall I explain it with pictures - it would probably make far more  sense
  15. What's next? I'll have to wait til i've moved all these on, only got the 1 breeding tank Considering I've never had any success breeding fish - before these zebra's I think I've had 2 guppies I'd brought in a pregnant state give birth but none of the fry survived, I better not get too carried away. Saw some nice swordtails today, I like the ones with the standard body forms, nothing selectively bred to produce weird fins etc so maybe i'll give them a go one day. Although I suppose you dont really breed swordtails, they just breed themselves!
  16. I'm really just breeding them for fun and satisfaction but thought if they could help pay for supplies that would be cool. Although I'd (the fish) only consume probably less than $1 on fish food a week! Although I could always use some more plants...
  17. The eye droper from my 1st year biology dissection kit has proved most useful for removing ?fungisised? eggs and other muck. Not that I intend to make millions from selling any fry that survive into adulthood but what sort of money do LFS offer (Around CHCH I've seen them for sale from around $2.60 - $ 6.95). $1, 50c, $20 for a whole bunch?? I'd be interested to hear what shops pay for different species of fish.
  18. Thanks Pegasus Think i'll give the egg yolk a try. Currently there's about 10' of water in the tank, should I drop it down a bit. The reason i've kept it basically full is with all the hot weather lately its easier to keep the temp. more stable - dont wont it rising to 29-30 degrees. A few of the eggs have been attacked by fungi  , will the ones that have hatched be safe from it? There are probably more viable eggs than fry I could raise, what would be the max no. I should try to raise in a 24' 12' 12? :-? The tank has a small double sponge filter. Cheers, Kriber
  19. Your so right Pegasus, marbles are a big pain in the butt to remove! I noticed eggs yesterday and this morning I noticed a few of the eggs had hatched (that doesn't sound right). Do their egg sacs provide them with enough food for a few days? I've had a bucket of water with boiled lettuce and some water from a drain that contains water fleas and cyclops amongest other things - this was my attempt at producing 'green' water. I've seen fry food in a tube at the LFS would this be okay, I don't mind the cost (initially) as this is the first spawning I've had outside of the comm. tank so they might actually stand a chance. If anybody has some other good ideas for fry food I would really appreciate the help. Cheers, Kriber
  20. Got one as well and it appears to work fine, gives the same temp. as another thermometer I've got and about the same temp. as what my external heater setting says. Read : hopefully its accurate! They also have a sensor that measures the room temperature - useful for giving an indication of how hard your heater will have to be working.
  21. Hi everybody (hi Dr Nick!) While looking through debris obtained from siphoning I found some zebra danio eggs and fry and also some white looking 'worms' they were about 5mm long and very skinny (or slender if that sounds nicer!). Does anybody have an idea of what they might be?
  22. What about an algae eater a.k.a. sucking loach (Gyrinocheilus aymonieri)? I've seen them in coldwater goldfish tanks in one shop at least (suppose that makes them coldwater goldfish and algae eater tanks then!!). One cleaned up my tank of excess algae that was growing on rocks and plants but it was constantly trying to give my kribs 'the bash' so I got rid of it (at my LFS) today.
  23. Kriber

    My tanks

Maybe, depending on what I've already agreed to do that day with certain 'others' and whether or not there is enough fish for both of us!!

    Moving...

Good one! Whatever their degrees are they're legit unlike John Davey's
  25. If two week old guppy fry couldn't survive the introduction of a pair of kribs and I noticed that one female guppy has 'mysteriously' lost weight overnight and some zebra danios were having a threesome spreading their eggs around I guess this means fish & eggs for breakfast. Ah, the joys of owning a single community tank. What fry have any of you got to survive into adulthood being raised entirely in a comm tank?
