  1. I wouldn't put him back with the fry until he isn't able to eat them, as now he will probably not recognize them as his own and they will go down well as an entre'
  2. http://www.petfrd.com/forum/articles.ph ... =87&page=1 cool idea Im keen to try make one of those. I have a very small powerhead here, does about 150LPH or so, and would be perfect for a 'nano' tank.... Ive been contemplating making a 6" cube for a while now, just need some glass... Im gunna try make one of these filters
  3. I would have to disagree with everyone here and say that a pair of kribs will be fine in that tank, but you wont be able to put much else with them. You could try 2 or 3 zebra danios, as they will stay near the top, and will be too fast for the kribs anywho. I had my pair in a 200l x 300w x 300high tank and they were happy as larry, and would breed quite readily. Kribs IMO are a perfect fish for a 5 year old as they will most likely form a pair (as long as you have a M & F) and will lay eggs, and eventually you will see the fry start to appear etc etc and your son will be Fascinated! Just give them a pot or something similiar to lay in if they want too
  4. Yea i usually do water changes on my killie/breeding tanks everyday, but i do more than 10%, just because i think it makes the tanks nicer, and because most of them dont even have a filter...
  5. Nah it didnt blow up, i just would have accidently cracked it last time i was changing the barrel around or something.... Im not sure. Barrie - I often do bigger water changes than 10%, especially on my cichlid tank and stuff, and i prefer to have heated water as it means i have that freedom to do bigger water changes without stress, and i can also fill up a new tank right there and then, put a cycled filter into it, put a heater in then add fish. I have had to do that many a time
  6. Just had slight spill in the fishroom (okay so i forgot that the hose was filling my aging barrel and it overflowed HEAPS) anyway, to get the mess cleaned up i had to empty the barrel (after id just filled it up) and get it out of the way.... I turned the pump on and started pumping out the window, then unplugged the heater (which id just turned on) and proceeded to pull it up and out of the water..... "WTF!?!?! wheres my heater gone!!!" Half was missing  The rest was still in the bottom of the barrel..... Must of accidently smashed it some time ago (dont know when) and didnt realise....... So yea, thats NOT what a heater should look like
  7. adding to what Caryl said, make sure you do another dose exactly the same as the first 2 weeks later. you could even do a thrid dose. Levamisole is a very gentle medication and wont harm your fish, it will just give them the S**ts. Its better to overdose the tank then underdose, so put a ml or two more in when you dose, just to make sure

    Size???

That would be perfect for any killie other than the king killies which get a bit bigger and need a 60 x 30 x 30 tank preferably
  9. Malawis require totally different water parameters than your other fish. The malawis should be in a tank with a pH of around 8, whereas the others should be in a pH of 7 or so. They should not be kept together at all!
  10. Yea i was looking at that the other day, and noticed ours wasn't there. I will get someone to forward Cees or Warren the details...

  18. Yep, everything Paul_r said is correct. And yes Tim is an awesome guy, with a fishroom that is worth checking out... Simply amazing setup and fish.
  19. Just came accross this on the planted tank http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/plant ... -tank.html Would be cool for pair of dwarf cichlids or something similiar (the person who made it said they wanted to add some apistos) as you could see them doing their thing in the cave....
  20. The more surface area the better; pack em in
  21. I think you are the perfect person for this project, and im sure you will do a great job. Yes us Killie keepers do use Peat, sometimes as a substrate, but more often it is just used in a small margarine container or similiar, for the fish to lay their eggs in, then it is 'collected' and dryed out for 3 months, then wet again and the fish will hatch. this is what happens in the wild.... the fish lay in the peaty substrate, the lake/swamp drys out and the adult fish die, after the dry season of around 3 months the rain comes and turns the place back into a swamp/lake and the fish hatch and the cycle happens all over again. these are known as Annual killies and have a much shorter life span than non-annual killifish. Im not 100% sure but i think that Peat has natural healing remedies aswell, which is an added bonus. It is very soft once it is underwater, so will be easy to burrow into and will not hurt your fish. It will make the water cloudy if it is dug up heaps, but i guess that wont matter too much for you. It will drop the pH significantly, and will stain the water a nice tea colour. I think it would be the perfect substrate for your purpose, and i hope all goes well!
