  1. Well as some of you may know, my old 250L tank got a serious case of the bends and needed to be fully stripped down and re-built in order for it not to break. So i went through the long tedious process of cutting it up, getting all the old silicon off, and then siliconing it back together again. It came up alright, but wasn't the prettiest tank you will ever see. I set it up outside and filled er' up. Sweet as, didnt blow out, but it did have some slight stress marks in the seams... something that i didnt like and/or trust. So i decided that i cant trust myself so left it outside to be a coldwater tank, which now holds all my driftwood, some spare java moss and 2 WCMM. Im gunna get more WCMM's soon so they will hopefully breed in there (ive also got some golden WCMM inside which im hoping to breed) Anyway, the next step was, what to do with my big (well smallish at the moment but not for long) Cichlids, including Uarus, Firemouths, and a keyhole, aswell as a bichir, 2 hoplos and some GBAs, BN and corys. They are ATM in a 3 foot holding tank as can be seen here.... I came accross a good sized tank up for sale here so bought it and took a trip up to auckland to pick it up, bought it home and gave it a good clean out and this is it now. Its 1300 x 450 x 600 high.... around 350 litres Next on the list is to buy a piece of 20mm ply wood this weekend for the top of the stand it will be on, and get the tank into place in my bedroom ready for the fill. It will have a 300W stainless steel heater, 1200lph external canister filter, 2 x 36w t8 tubes (maybe 4 in the future) and im thinking about using Reverse under gravel filtration, just to keep the gravel clean from crap, and i guess it provides a bit of extra filtering..... So, theres the story of my new tank and how it came to be... Any ideas as to how i can aquascape it, keeping in mind that i cant realy have plants because of the Uarus, but im going to try some big amazon swords and lots of indian fern and java moss and see what happens....
  2. Well i can tell you that when i had my big one that was throwing out heaps of fry  it only had 2 four foot fluoros over it (4 ft tank) but i was running pressurised co2 and using PMDD... Time for ferts me thinks Caryl
  3. Go kribs. they will be sweet in a tank that size. Mine are breeding in a 200 x 200 x 300 tank and are very happy with just a pot, some java moss and a filter!
  4. Thats a green lotus, not a red one. Im not sure if you can cut them, mine always just sent out runners... hundreds of them....
  5. lol, silver sharks in 5cm of water too
  6. I cant realy remember... ive had too many hard fish to catch but i do re-call trying to catch a female nannocara annomala in a densely planted tank wasnt fun
  7. Not realy, but some fish prefer different substrates to others. Malawis etc can be kept in a sand substrate, but most people like to use coral sand as it is a natural pH buffer. Some cichlids do like to dig and sift through the substrate so sand is the best bet.... Usually its just up to you what you like the look of most
  8. My uaru, firemouth, bichir, port hoplo etc temporary tank has only sand on the bottom ATM, but their old tank had a mixture of brightwater gravel and sand. Their new tank will also have a mixture of both most probably My tanganyikan(sp?) tank has coral sand on the bottom
  9. You mean the eggs from the Peat? I would have to say No, but there are a few exceptions i think that can be water incubated but i dont think its as good. Im not sure if any of the annuals in NZ can be or not. If you want something that you will able to water incubate the eggs in, get non-annuals.
  10. If you only have one hole then id do a durso. Full syphons are too risky if you dont have a back up pipe IMO. Dursos need to be bigger piping, then reduced down to the bulkhead size for them too work so if you used 32mm plumbing to make the durso, then got a 32mm-25mm reducer it would work great. It will quiet it down some, but with a durso you will never get it completely silent as air being sucked in will always make a slight noise. As for when the water enters the sump, im not sure but i think that if you have the pipe just above the water level it will be quietest as the air will be able to mostly escape before it enters the water. Im not sure on it though, and ive never had a sump myself so this is all just from other peoples experiences and my reading
  11. Yea, its a good sterilizing technique, especially if the DW is from freshwater and you will be sure no nastys (algae etc) will survive. It also helps it to sink as well aparently
  12. Yea it will be sweet after a wash and/or boil. If you have a waterblaster give it a good blast too as it will get right into the little nooks and crannys and help rid it of some of the build up HTH
  13. Thats been discussed here somewhere before.... its possible aparently, something do with pressure and stuff.... looks pretty cool though!
  14. Yep, ive done the same. Have a perfect wagtail platy line going! But i am struggling to sell the babys.... maybe because no-one in Te-Puke keeps fish (except for me and sharn ) and i cant ship.... Might get more takers in chch...........
  15. Had one once.... Bought a pressurised system and gave the nutrafin kit away. Not worth bothering IMHO. you could do just as good a job with a coke bottle full of yeast and sugar.... thats all the tablets are and they cost heaps HTH
  16. Not much you can do other than leave them be. dont try to put in hot water as it will stress them even more because the temperature will be going up and down and everywhere. Just let the heater slowly bring the temp up and sit it out. Do water changes daily if possible once tank is back to normal to keep the water clean and hopefully the fish will be sweet As smidey said though.... I used to do big water changes on my planted tank with the hose and it would drop to like 19 degrees and the fish loved it.....
  17. Baby brine shrimp will always be best
  18. Sas it just shows me my own profile when i click that link
  19. Another pic to make the thread interesting. I numbered the tanks in paint so i can tell you all whats in them! 1. about 15 baby Baby platys 2. pair of Kribs 3. pair of fundulopanchax gardneri albino (i think thats what they are :-? ) 4. 3 Female Guppys 5. Trio of Nothobranchius Korthausae yellow 6. Trio of Chocolate Australe 7. My cichlids (firemouths, bichir, uaru, hoplos etc) temp tank, their old tank went bust! 8. 4 male guppys and 7 medium sized platys (the platys are the same as the ones i have for sale but are ones that im growing up for breeders)(guppys are there to separate from fems) Next up on the list is to get the other side of the room going. Getting 6 small killi tanks to sit on a stand!!!
  20. I dont think you should do this, but in one of 'our' (mums tank aparently but i tell her what to do, what to get, whats wrong etc) 22l tanks there is 4 platys plus a few babys, 1 male fighter, 2 albino corys and a breeding pair of BN. I consider myself an experienced fishkeeper so can keep it a healthy tank with weekly water changes and filter cleans. it is an old tank, was my first 5 or so years ago, and has been running since so its well cycled etc. As i said, i woudlnt advise putting this much fish into such a small tank but it can work if you know what you are doing!
  21. Could you just email them to me please Caryl? Thanks He's done pretty much all his house electrical work and stuff but yea......
