  1. Te Puke water has it thats for sure, some days it reeks!
  2. Second what Ryan said. Normally you can hide the sponge filters behind a decoration or something to keep them out of the way until you need them.
  3. If you just set it up give it a little shake, its probably just trapped air.
  4. Probably a genetics things, rams arent known to be the hardiest fish anymore due to inbreeding etc.
  5. I agree Caryl, some people have no manners. It wasnt long ago i thought my 2 footer was huge and to many who have only kept 7L bowls it is large. Perhaps sowe should make a suggestion to TM about these size sections? Would most certanly make things easier than hitting 'most expensive' and trying to find the larger ones.
  6. I think it would slow down the cycle a bit as you are diluting the levels needed to cycle but its better to have happy fish than dead fish.
  7. I drain my water out the window (siphon attatched to hosing bought at bunnings) then bucket the water back into the tank from my two aging bins (70L each) that have heaters and powerheads in both. Would like to get a big powerhead to pump the water back in but havent got that far yet.

    Stupid power cut

Man, that sucks Ilah Shame each fish club cant have a few generators to loan out to members or something in times like this.
  9. Second the one per tank thing. My fella was a good little thing, but he was in a tank with larger fish (oscar, sev etc) so never really pushed his luck with any of them. They can cause a bit of issues in a peaceful, small fish community tank though depending on what you have in it of course.

    how stong?

one night with a house full of people is alot different to the long term weight of a large tank though. would pay to find out what year the house was built and what the regulations were for then with regards to floor strength, 850L is a very very heavy tank.
  11. Come on guys, didnt you know that fish only grow to the size of their tank? And you call yourselves a fish forum!
  12. I go for a month or longer myself. The way i see it is im not prepared to risk losing a whole tank of fish so i can wait a little longer for that extra peace of mind- many nasties can take a few weeks or more to show up in the first place.
  13. Two sides to every coin. Most people dont because of the fear the angels can hide their parasite loads and can be a little more agro (but i dont agree with the agro part, my discus are brutal sometimes). In saying that if you are pretty darn sure your angels are healthy theres no more risk adding them then most other fish right? Personally i like the look of one flat species per tank.

    over crowding???

It will be overcrowded soon. Those red spots will get as long as your tank, the clowns will eventually get around 30cm (but that takes aaaages) and the hoplos get a decent size, a bit big for a 60L IMO. However the neons, guppies and platies sound fine for the moment- might need to thin the guppies out as you go on though because of how much they breed
  15. Ive always rinsed mine too- the juice that comes off them doesnt smell very nice at all, cant say id want that in my tank
  16. Amazonian- Are you talking square inches/mass of the fishes body also? Reason i ask is because one inch of an adult oscars body is a heap bigger than one inch of a adult neons body so the forumula would need to be altered.
  17. Id say it is most likely a Datnoid, also known as borneo tigers and the likes. Dont have a scientific name off the top of my head tho sorry
  18. Perhaps they could be feeling a little uncomfortable in a small group and not wanting to go snail hunting too much?
  19. You'd wanna make sure your roof was clean- im not sure if id want bird poop and all sorts of other things in my tanks  Star- i know that there are products similar to that 'rift lake salts' that african keepers use to put in RO water but most people would make up their own, there should be a few recipies floating around on the net
  20. Sounds like blackbeard algae to me. The most common methods ive read aboutare using young siamese algae eaters or flourish excel. Im unsure what causes it tho sorry
  21. Depends what youre feeding and what youre feeding for. For example some large predatory fish only need a few feeds a week whereas someone growing out discus would be feeding several times a day. For most fish once daily suffices though, every second day probably wouldnt do them any harm
  22. With regards to the big syno would the hemisyno membranaceus do the job size wise? A foot long one of them is a big fish, my little 15cm fella is already quite tall.
  23. Might pay to talk to Alan on that one- im sure hes got some contacts over that way
  24. Careful with the O's. I think Tracey had hers housed together for a bit and the O's were a bit boisterous for the clown.
  25. Well, thats it, ours are going out the back tomorrow until this mess can all be sorted, thankfully none have been sold. Hopefully someone contacts the stores soon so we know whats going on. I wasnt at work when they came in but when i saw them i thought they looked like tapeworm  Things get bought in all the time and slip thru the cracks, yes the importer 'should' know what theyre bringing in and MAF 'should' know what theyre letting out but i guess it just doesnt happen that way.
