Cant say ive seen them myself but i havent ever gone searching for them

    Tail rot

For each 10 gal (37.85L) use one capsule. wait 24 hours and repeat dose. wait another 24 hours then make a 25% w/c. repeat this treatment for a second time. make a final 25% w/c and add activated carbon. treatment may be repeated if necessary. Thats what it says (in short) on the back of my pack, i always w/c'd out the last treatment though, never used carbon.
  3. How do people treat flukes (skin or gill) in a pond? Is there any easy way of going about it that wont result in the pond going thru a full cycle all over again?
  4. david- there was two suppliers that had them. The one you saw for $150 is much bigger than the ones going for $35 from the other supplier. I got one of the larger ones but that supplier is now out of stock. The wholesale price of the $35 ones nearly made me fall off my chair, they are very cheap indeed.
  5. We had a male at work (they hide quite a bit so i dont know if we had others), could see his little blueish spot on his side and he had longer fins than a few of the others. I would assume if a store has a few of them there would be at least one male in the group. They do look very similar though. Good luck finding some
  6. Agreed, and your africans would be much happier in a tank dedicated to them as they require the opposite water of your oscars. In one tank you could have: 2 Baby Oscars 2 Baby Silver Dollars (these prefer to be in groups) 3 Silver Sharks (these get *real* big) 3 Adult Gold Barbs (these will get eaten eventually) I also have 2 that look like firemouths s im gonig with that 1 golden sevrum 1 pictus catfish I would have no less than a 500L tank for the above fish because of your sharks. If you didnt have them you could probably get away with around 350-400L. Oscars grow around an inch a month so get big quickly, also when they hit puberty a cramped tank can cause major personality clashes which can end badly. And in the other: 1 Kadango 1 Peach Malawi not sure on name 1 Albino Malawi not sure on name I might have 1 Girafe not sure Im not sure what size these guys max out of but they would probably appreciate more of their own kind. Best of luck
  7. For those that live in coldish areas/areas prone to long powercuts a small generator may come in handy as a backup, especially if you have alot of fish in alot of tanks. I will be getting one sometime just incase.
  8. I quarentine too. It only took one big problem for me to become a quarentine freak  If i cant be bothered quarentining it i dont get it. I use a spare 2 footer with the sponge filter. Nothing that has touched that tank first touches the rest without being sterilised first (which is usually just a bucket). I always do mine for a month at least, sometimes more if i want to grow the fish up a bit. No medications are added unless i see a problem. I reckon if you couldnt handle losing every single fish in the tank then always quarentine, because every new fish into that tank has the chance of doing so.
  9. Hanz- they look like seethru tapeworm  they are very wierd but very cool
  10. Good to hear Fingers crossed that he continues to make a speedy recovery
  11. Depends on what your treating too, both the above wont touch the likes of camallanus (intestinal nematode) but will do tapeworm, hex and a few other things.
  12. I agree with caryl. If it was flukes you would expect to see them using one gill, pumping them or scratching on things. Discus can get flukes fairly easily if they get upset so definatly keep an eye on him/her.
  13. I agree with David, Oscars grow real fast (1" or so a month till theyre around 10") and they may get big enough fast enough to eat the little eely up, im not sure how quickly they grow though. I know they can be kept with oscars but they do need to be a reasonable size to not become a tasty worm to chase around
  14. Clean water does wonders for wounds and i could dig up a few pictures of super badly damaged fish (looked like they had been in a blender) that have healed superbly without anything other than water changes. Salt isnt gonna effect the tinfoil but it would have got your loaches, plecs if you had them and so on. The scaleless fish also prefer a half dose of most other medications so if you used a full dose of the meth blue that may well have contributed. Stress coat may or may not help, because it contains aloe vera it will contribute to the organic bioload to the tank ive been told. Ive never used it to help wounds personally. If i was in your situation i would do a water change (quietly of course, no major banging in the tank), keep the tank lights off and traffic near the tank to a minimum, add 1tsbp of salt per 40L of water and perhaps some melafix if you wish. Best of luck

    Waste

Depends what you keep. I often see big bright red poops from my Oscar and Sev on the bottom of their tank  I would prefer it to be solid so i can vacumn it out easily that in a million little pieces
  16. I would say at least four, preferably 5+ to live in a group, long term, happily. I had five at one stage and found there to be moderate aggression levels but nothing too bad (just my experience though). When i first started at work there was only two discus in one of the tanks, it was obvious who was the more dominant one as the other was paper thin and hid all day Now there is 6 in the tank staff have made comments about how much happier everyone seems to be.
  17. Be prepared for the possibility of the dominant one making life miserable for the other one, two discus usually only get along if its a pair and even then they have some almighty lovers tiffs
  18. With smaller discus they require loads of water changes, heaps of feeding and it is easier to stunt them. I will let an experienced breeder tell you what work they are doing with their young fish, it really is mind blowing and if i had to do that it would have taken the pleasure out of it seeing as i had just started keeping them. I got mine at 8cm or so and was still going at least 50% daily w/c's for several months I made the mistake of starting with only a few and i wouldnt reccomend doing that to anyone looking back. I started with 3 and it was horrible, all they did was pick on each other and two stopped eating because the alpha wouldnt let them come out from behind the plant When i got two more things perked up a bit and the pecking order settled down, i currently have 6 in my 220L. There is still the usual fighting between everyone with the two largest males being the worst but nothing compared to when i had only a few. I know it can be a hard hit to the pocket (seeing a breeder helps with that one ) but watching your new babies harrass each other to the point they refuse to eat and start wasting away isnt fun at all.
  19. 10 adult discus would require at least the 350L to themselves and that would still be borderline IMO. Good luck with the stocking
  20. You could grow a few baby ones up in there (although i dont reccomend buying anything under 6cm unless you want to put in *heaps* of work) but long term i wouldnt house any in there. They do get quite sizable and a few of mine are probably close to 3cm thick. I would reccomend starting with a 200L (i prefer barebottom while they are young, easier to keep clean) and a group of 5 or more 6cm+ fish, when they are all adults you will see why you need the room
  21. Perhaps she thought the carbon would remove the effectiveness of the peat (i dont think it does but i can see why she would think that). Either way, like Wok said, i would remove the carbon. That space is much better used for bio media or mechanical filtration IMO
  22. Be careful with the corn, everything i have read says it is very hard for fish to digest and can block them up. Also the skins on the peas can cause the same problem (ive always deshelled mine anyway so i havent had any first hand experience with that)

    Discus pics

Cant help you with the sexing jolli (i just go by who lays eggs with who and who goes after who  ) but females will most certanly fight with each other, they will even fight with males. I often catch my alpha female taking on the second in charge male (who wants to be alpha) and she regularly challenges my turq (who stole her husband briefly  )
  24. Are you sure it was aquascope Tu? Hes a local fellow and i havent seen any on their list. They have been on another suppliers list tho for at least a month now. As said above it depends on what store the suppliers use, some use only one while others use several.
  25. You think hes messy now! Wait until hes 12" and thinks blowing 75% of his food back out his gills is the greatest thing in the world  Cherish the small amount of waste while you still can
