  3. Ido a 50% change on my oscar tank once a fortnight, its bare as in glass only no plants no gravel the only biological input is the filter which I clean alternate weeks. I do one thing which tends to amuse people though, I use a pool vaccum bush hose and pool pump to empty. Which means I can give it a good scrub and pick up everything without disturbing the fish. They dont mind the brush in the tank but get a little iffy if only the hose is in there. I need something to preheat/treat water though and it looks like the only think may be a header tank in the roof for this.
  4. I have heard of someone using one of thise portable spas as an indoor pond in a conservatory. The same person also keeps tropical rain forest plants in there, form what I have heard its a hit.
  5. exactly....thats why I said 6 months. They grow
  6. I personally think the bioload is enough for a tank that size, thats not taking into account the cycle length. You would be better in my opinion to leave it as is for at least 6 months.
  7. aha the all important but belittling assumption
  8. lol it wasnt the bbq its been a rountuit thing for a year or so
  9. sent email to myself at work haircut due
  10. I think that long starfish you have is of the pest variety, one thing that there is around the mana wharf is a little black bully sort of a cross between a bully and a knife fish. Never seen anything like it anywhere else.
  11. bucket and thumb over inlet works a treat, the VA taps are terrible but the bonus of it going ang going far outweighs a minor thing like that.
  12. has anyone spoken to Warren since he left? I just got word they shut the track road this afternoon
  13. I am debating coming today as I have a 4wd with extra high center of gravity, the normal high winds in wellington are tricky with it, but with the gale warning in place and the predicted 140kph I am wondering if its better to not risk it.
  14. just to check.....are we still on in light of the traffic and weather warnings? At this rate the only way through maybe by train.
  15. I think there is a lemon ratio with fluvals for every good one that goes and goes there are 7 lemons. I have a via aqua 650 el cheapo side by side with a fluval 404, the fluval constantly gunges up in the out-take hose it kinks at will, it stops pumping and if I am lucky only the flow rate drops. It has cost me around $100 in replacement parts in the past 12 months..it drives me nuts. The VA is like the energiser bunny its keeps going and going and going and going
  16. this is the tiramisu recipe I follow very loosely http://www.heavenlytiramisu.com/rcp-101.htm operative word is loosely, I translate brandy into kahlua and 2-3 cups not 2/3 choc velvet is handy too and I use a supermarket choc trifle sponge.
  17. maybe I should do both, better do it tonight though as I intend to be rolled through the door tomorrow night. Although I suppose I can make the tiramisu in the morning.
  18. this is the stuff I used, http://www.hagen.com/uk/ponds/basic/8-1.cfm the green water clarifier. What I liked the mostis that I needed very little to do the job and only needed to do it once.
  19. normally I would think snake oil too but this stuff has worked, which surprised me. I have been using diatom bags for some time to no avail, daily water changes everything. For a start its a 2 hour job just to do a water change on this particular tank, plants are regarded as food and ugf gravel stones or wood are playthings. I have a devious plan for this lot which will take time to set up but it will be done.
  20. god no, too damned nice to associate with a coronary.
