    Oscars

MTCW. Oscars can and will fret without interaction Oscars will lift lids - make sure its really heavy Oscars will jump out - always keep a lid on them (I lost two this way in a day) Oscars like plants, especially to pull out. Good quality cat biscuits is cheaper, cleaner, less fatty and less phosphate that fish food for these food hoovers.
  2. Actually Mystic I had an interesting talk with the vet about this a few months ago. Apparently its well documented that domestic rats and mice are generally ignored by cats and dogs because they are used to them and they dont tend to fright-flight around them. Although if you watch your cats they will perk up in interest when the rats fight or run around the cages. Our cat is a ratter and has been known to bring home the odd hare and rabbit, but the rats regard him as a plaything to climb over.

    missing danios

Here I was thinking the GKF and the GG were eating them and its a very small long finned eel thats in the tank, this eel is so small and I would have thought there was no way it could have got one in its mouth. Think snake and antelope syndrome. Moral of the story:long finned eels will take live food and that the rule of thumb of the bigger fish than the size of the predator does not apply.
  4. they do it's called reality tv and Cambell Live
  5. I had a boss whose kids indiscriminately bred mice, the mice were separated after I offered to feed the babies to my fish. On the note of those fish, typical teenage boy stuff - cant have a pitbull so keep fish so hungry they will tear apart small animals for kicks.
  6. I have a giant gourami and she is good fun, however (be warned club members) moving her or treating the tank is a big job and something of a well thought out exercise. This one fish needs a 50 litre bin to hold her over, a knotless net capable of holding a 20kg fish anything smaller will collapse under the weight of large angry fish. Its a fish that I would not recommend to anyone who may have to move house - ever. Large tanks, good filtration, and excellent drainage facilities do help. Her tank is within the reach of the pool vaccum hose, it could not be any other way, the convenience of the pool pump cannot be ignored. They dont like being messed with and can get cranky, they also have a nasty bite if you arent quick enough separating food from fingers, mine adores chicken mince and will eat incredibly large amounts of this given half a chance. Fresh cook strait shrimp go down a treat and so does lettuce. I agree with Alan though, if you dont have the facilities dont get one.
  7. yes if the sealant is plaster based. Sorry Caryl only option I can see is ripping off the sealant and plastering with a good appropriate plaster(ka-ching ka-ching), waterproofer and a good aggregate on top. I am no professional concreter but I do know that most of the sealants require a maximum size gravel mix to work properly and that the range is in the hundreths of millimetres. One thing I have learnt is that you cant overdo the foundations for waterbearing concrete, if anything its better to overprepare than fix later.
  8. the waterproof bonding agents effectively change the molecular structure of the concrete to repel water. Its about $15 a litre, and compared to long term water damage - its cheap. I would have gone with the shot spray method, which is a popular way of concreting swimming pools now. Even if for no other reason it was to play with the last legal civil machine gun in the country.
  9. I always add waterproofer and palmolive detergent as a plasticiser, did they pour or spray Caryl? It may be worth finding out what formula they used for the concrete.
  10. These pics were taken in a small polluted stream, a very special and pleasant surprise. The eyes are on top they were colouring up and the size is genuine.
  11. our house alarm has a similar feature, if the power is off for more than 60 mins and/or the alarm has been set off it dials the cellphone and leave a pip code. We had the bios on it adjusted to inform us about the power as it has been known for thieves to cut the power and let the alarm run out of battery power. If you are going to be in that situation such as going away you need to leave the number of a willing club member with the person looking after your place - just in case.
  12. feelers can you make real grain spirit? I see limoncello season coming........
  13. couple of hints: there is more than one type of alkathene, from memory is blue strip and red stripe, red strip is more expensive, stands up to a higer pressure and is uv treated, blue stripe is not treated and will break down and quickly. Get quotes for pvc pressure pipe - for example locally its $27 a metre at the plumbing supplies and $2.50 a metre from the pool suppliers - for exactly the same pvc pipe. Same goes for fittings. Shop around. Each time you put a bend in you will reduce the head by one foot, there is somewhere on the net a calculator for this. If in doubt, talk to the pool guys, they have installed pumps and filters in all sorts of things and situations. You would be suprised at what they know.

    But online

hydroponic suppliers are good for all sorts of things, lights, pumps heaters chemicals controllers etc and the prices are more than reasonable, not to mention competitive to many of the psuedo dealers.
  15. there is always someone looking for a fight and justification for the fight. Good on you wasp, you have found a way to reduce the harvest load on wild anenomes.
  16. anyone who rides will get this.. mother hedgehog says to baby hedgehog sit hard and deep dear.
  17. and a sign and a report on the recognised hazard for osh.
  18. using driftwood is a moot point it harbours insects which are eaten by fish which are eaten by bigger fish etc. If everyone removed driftwood off the beach it takes a mighty chunk out of the food chain.
  19. someone please tell me I am not dreaming.....check out the relevant auctions for the plecos. I am sure he has used the wrong photos.
  20. the hedgehogs will be ok if they can climb out, which by the looks of it they can, those littel suckers can swim, but like anything else only for so long.
  21. The same goes for customers, abusive and abrupt customers usually get nowhere - unfortunately, abusive customers are a hell of a lot more prolific than abusive sales staff. Try to remember that this is LIVESTOCK and that its not the responsibility of the shop to take back fish because you have changed your mind. Its even more unreasonable if those fish have been specially ordered in for you. There is always at least 4 sides to customer service, what the customer thinks, what the retailer thinks, what actually happened and then the reality of the whole situation.
  22. Jo I have the old stainless sand filter sitting here if you want it. Apart from some new sand it will work fine.
  23. very impressive Caryl. Only things I would have done differently is installed filtration as you would a swimming pool pool pump and vaccum are incredible for cleanup and water changes) and installed niches for underwater lighting.
  24. I replaced the pool sand filter today, the multiport on it is damaged but it will still go. If someone wants it. The pump is toast but the filter is here to take away. Large stainless steel filtamaster sandfilter rated for around 40 000 litres but could be useful for a large or marine tank, has waste/backwash and recurculation ports.
