Yeah decap is awesome too I forgot about that, I should really get some more just feed it lightly or presoak it so you don't pop the fish..
-
Just crush it up really fine and see if they eat it, sometimes adding a bit of water in a spoon and really mushing it up or crushing it then washing the fine crumbs off your finger works. Just be careful you don't overfeed any new food as they probably wont eat much of it initially.

They will pick at what the mum is eating as they grow but generally introduce new foods as you think they will fit into their mouths.. Try and feed them on as much variety as you can when they are younger and then they don't turn into fussy adults

Good work Must be something in the weather just watched my shellies breed too..

Hi guys, I have a platy that looks like its trying to die
ryanjury replied to mincedgreen's topic in Diseases
Plenty of things that cause a bent spine apart from tuberculosis but it is one thing to bear in mind. If the fish is bent and lying on the bottom of the tank then best to put it out of its misery.. -
I believe that female live bearers don't have ovipositors as that would be the device that female egg layers use to lay eggs with.. Anyway sometimes a baby does get stuck on the way out, sometimes it ends up with the fish dying due to the stuck baby not being absorbed or passed but going off causing an internal infection. The best thing you can do is to keep the water clean and maybe remove the female to her own quiet tank and hope that her body sorts out what is going on.

aquarium bulb with bayonet fitting - does it exist
ryanjury replied to aquadude's topic in Beginners Corner
Water is going to lesson the life of any bulb or unprotected electrical item, do you have lids on your tank? Or any ventilation in the hood? -
Looking good Alot of those water marks can be hard to remove and sometimes actually etch into the glass. Also if you are concerned about the silicon they don't waste your time going over the old stuff, the new silicone wont stick to the old stuff very well, and if the old stuff is already on the way out it will just peel out and take the new stuff with it.. If it is dodgy then you are best to cut it all out and start again.

Cool, was it that tank that someone posted pics of on here a while back?
-
Awesome, how thick is the glass?
-
That is a massive tank! Awesome.. 2800ood L Would love to do a project like this first but would have to win lotto first.. Have you already got the tank?
-
That is an odd sized tank. So it is either 3.54x800x1000cm or 3.54x800x1000mm a bit hard to tell without units and think there was a typo in the first measurement.. Either way if you are doing a big tank that height you would need to use at least 15mm glass to get a safety factor just above 2, thicker to get it over the recommended minimum of 3, meaning a very very expensive tank.

At a guess I would say the light is an indication of when they heating element is on and would be hooked in with the thermostat. In normal operation I would expect it to be on/off for reasonable lengths of time. If it is flashing on/off fast then maybe it is some sort of error code but I don't know how advance these things are and if they have any sort of electronics that allows them to do that..

That is interesting I am making the comparison with the various eheim, fluval, jebo, via aqua, sun sun and other externals I have used and owned over the years.. As I have said above I have had quite a few of them running for years and years with tanks nice and clean fish all healthy and nothing wearing out or going wrong so they can't be that bad. Believe me some cheap brands are rubbish and I happy to say that for ex I have found the jebo externals don't last very long before they leak and fall to bits.
-
It all depends what you want to get out of it and what you want to spend.. To me I have found the aqua ones to be really good quality even compared to eheim and fluval, I am pretty rough with stuff so tend to find out what ones are cheap and nasty. My aqua ones have all stood up with 4-5yrs of constant use and I am yet to break anything on them, have an air leak or even wear out an impeller, plus they do a good job of filtering the tank, that is pretty good going for any filter in my books let alone a cheap one. The eheim media does retail for alot more? But what is it worth? And does it do any better job? I know the aqua one stuff works and it is a hard thing to determine. It might be like some other products that come out of the same factory with different labels on them and different prices based on marketing. lol I think Phoenix hates the fact the hoses are clear and algae/crud tends to grow in them which can look pretty terrible. This is a very interesting discussion, and the type of thing that will happen everywhere in life with all products we buy, shops we shop at etc everyone has their own opinions.
-
But the aqua one comes with perfectly good media that has always done me and the others I know who use them fine
-
Even if the smaller ones have bypass they are still pretty filthy and get the tanks clean so it doesn't really matter

Hope the fish is ok, I have dropped plenty of lids in and I am yet to hit a fish, generally the drop flat and just float through the water but when dropped on an edge could do some damage.. I have done a similar thing except the lid landed on my foot went in about 2cm deep cut a nerve, ended up getting shot up with morphine stitched up and had to get ultrasound to make sure the glass was out.. My toe and side of my foot is still numb to this day due to nerve damage
-
That is caused by either a cheap nasty multiboard shorting out or overheating with current flowing through it (these cause LOTS of household fires and at least one fishroom fire I have heard of) or if a drip of water or something got under the plug and shorted it out.. Glad you got there in time You can buy better quality multiboards as livingart has suggested, surge protectors wont do anything to help as they only protect against surges from the power supply end, those ones with current limiting devices would help somewhat if something was shorted as they would trip out killing the power.
-
I have heard that WCMM don't do so well in higher temps so maybe lower the temp a bit?
-
It is interesting that you would say that, I own all sorts (including an FX5 - which gets a few bad reviews for connectors and stuff like that but I have had no issues with) and I have not noticed any problems with the aqua ones. I have had 3 of them running (that I brought second hand) for 4-5 years constantly with all the standard gear none of it has broken and it all still works fine, from talking to others this is a similar story so I would love to know what issues you have had with them? I agree if you get a similar sized eheim to a aqua one the aqua one will use maybe 1-2W more power but it will take many years before that pays for the difference in purchase price

That sucks the platy isn't feeling better Unfortunately the symptoms he was showing weren't suggesting worms so I wouldn't expect him to improve with a worming treatment..
-
Sometimes we need to make decisions based on the welfare of the animals we choose to keep rather than what we want.. I would suggest you pass your discus on to someone who can house them correctly (and knows how to care for them) and get some more suitable fish for your 60L tank. As Phoenix said tropical axolotls don't exist, they need to be kept in cool water..
-
Yeah the masterpets and jebos are nasty.. I have found aqua ones to be ok for the price, but in this area it does appear you get what you pay for and the jagers/renas I have running are awesome..
-
With a batch that size I would setup a small tank and siphon some off, that way if she does decide to have a munch you have some fry to grow out and potentially replace your pair if they expire.. I have heard these guys aren't on the wholesale list anymore so they may become difficult to find, especially ones as good as the ones in this batch..
