    New Tank

Man that tank looks good the rams look awesome too Congrats im glad you got it all running and starting to look good the plants will grow and fill the tank up.. Bring on the discus! My golds bred last night.. I was pretty surprised..
  2. Yeah sounds like a good description.. When the other member of the pair approaches they do twitch and stuff like that, I think its some sort of primitive communication to let them know which one is their partner..
  3. I would expect to pay a fair bit to get a new piece of glass that big I paid $200 for 2 150 x 60 x 60 pieces in 10mm and some 150 x 7.5 braces.. But that was fairly cheap.. IMO the only option on a tank that size is to replace the whole piece of glass, maybe just ring around glaziers and ask prices until you find the best one or barrie maybe able to help, and yes if I was getting it fixed I would put braces on it too. Good luck!
  4. Yeah I know and surely you can find people who will keep feeding them, we had people come out and take the kittens early but apparently its highly illegal and maf can and will prosecute you.. That is according to the 20 or so emails saying that when we listed them and said they were ready to go at 6 weeks..
  5. Freezing is supposed to be painless and not cruel at all, apparently the fish slowly shuts down as it is frozen and it feels no pain, I personally take them outside and smash them on the concrete its quick painless and easy and the dogs clean up the mess lol..
  6. See page 28.. http://www.biosecurity.govt.nz/files/st ... e-dogs.pdf I always thought dogs were later.. But this says 8 weeks.
  7. lol yes we thought it was stupid to our cats were weened etc at 6 weeks and its when we got ours when we got them...
  8. You know legally they have to be 8 weeks old aye??...We tried to list our 6 week old kittens on Trademe when we had them and got in big trouble..Have a look at the MAF website the law is on there somewhere.
  9. My boss is probably my big dolphin male, followed by the ice blue and cobalt blue males.. My fryeri too is a big push over he's breeding at the moment and I watched my yellow male half his size face him yesterday and win..
  10. lots of photos of peoples tanks on cichlid-forum.com..
  11. Unsure what worms it can be used for.. But metro shouldn't cost that much? I think I paid less than $1 for a tab and one tab does 40 litres so your looking at 3.5 per day so probably around $15 to treat your tank? And if your vet charges you a dispensing fee it would add $5 but that should be max I would contact another vet, especially if they want to see the fish when they probably know nothing about it.. And I don't think fish need worming regularly as they're in a fairly closed environment, maybe if your introducing new fish regularly and also feeding live food from outside you have the potential to introduce worms.. And you would like to think the petshop would help fixing the problem but who knows if they will, have you talked to them Steve?
  12. I have heaps in the same tank you can stick most of them together but the most important thing to remember is you cant breed in a mixed tank the most spectacular tank you will ever seen is an all male african tank with a heap of peacocks and haps
  13. It also depends where your getting your discus from.. If the person your getting them off worms his fish regularly knows what he's doing and has healthy fish there is no need too.. I know where I would buy discus and I wouldn't quarantine them, but from all other sources I would its not worth the risk..
  14. lol nah he jumped Lost another today down to 1 lol no biggie price reflected the risk

    Jags?

I have never kept them myself I presume they will stay protective while their eggs are still there and if they get free swimming it will probably get worse

    Jags?

How agro are they getting? I would be worried about other tank mates because they can be big and nasty.. Maybe move the other fish or sort out some sort of divider?
  19. lol I can suggest hundreds Have a look through my photo bucket I have a fully stocked 5ft tank with peacocks and haps and stuff like that in there also a few pics of peacocks that might give you some direction.. http://s47.photobucket.com/albums/f183/ryanjury/ Sounds like your other tank is a interesting mix does it work? Do you have mainly mbuna in that one? With your new tank did you want to breed and have babies to sell out of it as that limits your choices with peacocks, im mixing them in my tanks but only species I can tell females apart and no holding peacock females are stripped out of my tank they are separated and bred in species tanks..
  20. Yeah I have an FX5 they are designed to have adjustable flow rates also with the output nozzles you can point in in any direction you want.. I also have it on a 5 x 2 x 2' tank and its fine no problems with flow.. You can download the manual for the FX5 if you just google fluval fx5 it should come up..
  21. There is an overflow for a sump but I never set one up im going to take over flow etc out when I strip down the tank once the new stand is made, filtration is currently an FX5 which is as big and flows as much water as a sump anyway it does a bloody good job Cheers the tank will be alot nicer on a new stand with proper lighting and the back painted black not that blue colour it is at the moment but im happy with it
  22. Tank is 540L 5 x 2 x 2.. Needs some work im currently making a new stand for it.. As for number of fish who knows I haven't sat down and made a list it would be a heap though and always changing as I pull fish out to put in species tanks to breed them there would probably be 50-60 fish in there
  23. Peacocks are african cichlids What do you have in your other tank.. Were you after different africans? Or different cichlids altogether..
  24. Your 5ft tank is not big enough for an silver once it grows up a bit.. Unless it is like 3ft wide
  25. I usually stack my rocks right up to give all the fish somewhere to hide (the most bullied fish usually hang around the surface so I try and have rocks quite high in case one gets beaten up so it hides behind that one not floating on the surface being a sitting duck..) and breed, the demasoni are cool and breed in there but aren't very dominant so I try to give them alot of places to breed because they usually end up getting disturbed and chased around the place.. Its over to you really how many rocks you want to stick in I have seen african tanks with like 2-3 rocks in there but you would need alot of fish to break up aggression..
