  1. Tropheus has asked me to post these on his behalf.. Male from OOA Male from somewhere else..
  2. Is there any chance anyone has a photo of any of the fish from OOA? I will post a pic of my ones for comparison.. Just be interesting to see the differences in the different lines..
  3. I wondered if they were from that line The ones I have seen grown up have stuff all red/brown on them so it must fade.. It is awesome when you wait for ages with small fish and they finally colour up even better when they breed, good luck Mark and update pics as he grows..
  4. How big is the tank? Was the filter setup with any sort of fish in the tank or just in an empty tank or was any established media used in the filter? I guess the suggestion of measuring your water change water isn't a bad one maybe your adding the problem with your "fresh" water?
  5. Are they from OOA? They are very nice looking fish will be interesting to see how they colour up and see how much of that red/brown they keep Keep us updated with pics etc..
  6. How big is the tank? How long has the filter been setup? If your doing water changes then the nitrate levels should be going down regardless of whats been going on in the tank.. How old is your test kit? they do expire and give incorrect readings when expired.. You say you've lost fish in that tank, what were their symptoms before they died? I don't think it will come from the gravel..
  7. looking good mark Fryeri are some awesome fish when coloured up.. Yours is showing alot of brown/red where did he come from looks like he might be a slightly different line to what I have seen around..
  8. Add baby bristles and move them out as they grow
  9. Gutted man I hope there is another male in the remaining fish or the eggs survive.. I will come over and catch up with you guys before I leave..

    FX5 Media

Goto spotlight or store like that and buy pillow stuffing make sure it doesn't have mould inhibitor in it..
  11. Min colony of 10+ min tank size of 4-5ft probably 300-400 L Heres a good article for you.. http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/s ... opheus.php I am keep to get some at some stage too hopefully Johannes lets me know when/if their are some for sale down the line its a pretty serious investment getting 12 of them though..
  12. As I said really glad these guys bred for you makes the trip etc worth it Make sure you post some pic's I hope they work out to be great parents or good luck to Daf for removing the eggs have heard some stories about those guys when they tried to take them.

    FX5 Media

Oh yeah fair enough mine does a very good job of clearing the water on my tank even when I bomb it out with my homemade food that always leaves tiny particles everywhere but each to their own.. Have you looked at something like this? http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 746873.htm I am unsure how good they are but seem reasonably priced and if im not wrong 9.5L is about a bucket full? The more biomedia the better really, of course they will live in filter wool etc otherwise sponge filters wouldn't be all that good.. If your tank is giong to be overfiltered anyway you could buy it as you can afford it and increase it overtime as you stock up your tank...

I have the 3 middle sections filled with bio media, the ceramic noodles pumice, and those random plastic things I raided probably 3 other canasters to get enough it can hold alot I would hate to buy it it would cost a fortune.. I probably wouldn't bother with anymore filter wool did yours come with the pads around the outside? Boimedia is more important than the filter wool and the stuff that came with it seems to do a good job.
  16. Yeah for sure Like I said obviously what your doing is working so no point in changing anything.. Was just saying, I lost the only tropheus I ever had by feeding them one day with normal flake boom got bloat and carked it.
  17. dohc Glad to hear the dem's are going well im sure the peacocks and yellows wont be too far behind If your water change water has no kh or a low kh level in it then heaps of large water changes will change nothing Thats where the baking soda is helpful.. The best way is to have the media in the tank but if it doesn't work you can try other things, personally if it was over 7 and the fish were happy I would leave it its been ages since I even tested my ph and I don't add anything to my tanks everything is happy, have africans and even dwarf cichlids breeding in tap water.. All africans have a piece of limestone or some crushed coral in their tanks but don't know if it does anything should really calibrate the ph meter..
  18. I have only ever heard horror stories about feeding tropheus meat based foods including shrimp pellets and tubifex and would probably stay away from colour bits as well.. That is just me and if its working for you then you must be lucky or the info is wrong obviously your doing something right for them to breed etc, but just keep it in mind as bloat is a killer and will wipe them out pretty quick..
  19. Awesome good work They're so cute when they're little! Have you had any other spawns yet?
  20. lol I just use rock salt from the supermarket Its just natural sea salt however you can buy aquarium salt or even rift lake salt but thats like bottled gold so maybe stay away from that lol
  21. Just like any other real cichlid I think it depends on the size of your tank and if you want pairs or singles of each fish.. Personally I wouldn't stick any fish I liked with my pair of kribs thats why mine are in my african tank they just shreaded every community fish I had in with them.. If you give us an idea of what fish you were planning to try and the size of your tank it would help.. Also best to mix dwarf cichlids..
  22. Hey man yeah I hope you get one I am gutted about the one that we tried for you You will get there in the end perserverence is the key, if you want me to get onto those ones around here let me know shipping them would be easier Good luck!
  23. Yeah as above you don't want any other fish in the tank it seems to just stress the parents out, hopefully your rams are good parents mine haven't had a go in their own tank but in a community tank they guard them well but egg's only last 12 hours I don't know if they eat them or others.. And although those fish are small ram babies are tiny and tetra's and rainbows are fast and pretty good at picking babies off.. Good luck with the ram's
  24. water quality should be good PH and GH should both be high, however no need to go mental on it maybe 7.5+ should be fine.. Heres some reading for you.. lake article http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/l ... africa.php Buffer http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/buffer_recipe.php Reliable answers to pretty much everything you need to know can be found here but prepare to invest (or waste as my wife say's) a few hours into reading it all.. http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/ Good luck glad to see more african keepers, what size tank have you got and what fish are you planning to stock with?
  25. As Mark said its probably excess slime triggered by something if the fish is ok it should just clear up but a water change and some salt wont hurt.. How many fish do you have in your tank is there any serious aggression yet? and what size is it filtration etc? You have posted a few concerns lately maybe somethings going on.. Or it could just be nothing but would hate for disaster to be brewing..
