  1. Tonic should be alright it has other things in it but I can't remember what but think I have used it instead of meth before. Micros usually survive most things so take your old culture and divide it up start up a few cultures and see if any of them take..
  2. I wouldn't move the parents if you want the eggs to live id say they will eat them.. But wont be long before they breed again if they do eat them so wont be a biggie..
  3. If you want to raise them then move the heater with eggs attached to another your other tank with water from the parents tank with meth blue in it, with a sponge filter and airstone over the eggs to create airflow and stop fungus keeping the tank in a dark place with no lighting also helps cut down on fungus. A few eggs may fungus (or even all of them if you have 2 females that paired up), generally the eggs take 3 days or so to hatch and a week or so longer to be free swimming, the fry will take microworms or any sort of liquid fry from petshop or newly hatch brineshrimp. Don't feed until they are fully free swimming and feed very little amounts you should be able to judge how much is enough by looking at their see through bellies. They will require larger tanks probably something like a 3ft will be good to grow them out to sellable. I wouldn't move the eggs and parents they are likely to be spooked and eat them, and if you leave them in the tank they're in its not likely they will survive. Good luck
  4. I think the kribs would be ok, putting caves or anything they may use for breeding in one corner is a good idea gives the other fish more room.. You could always consider cockatoo's as well might even be able to do cockatoo's and kribs, a friend of mine locally has nice cockatoo's for sale at the moment.. viewtopic.php?f=11&t=36817 Heres a link to some photos of my ones so you have some idea what they will look like, the photos are of my pair which were brother/sister to the parents of the ones he has for sale.. That was when they were very young the male got those orange blotches all over his tail and back of dorsal fin when he matured but I didn't get any pics of him before he jumped. http://s47.photobucket.com/albums/f183/ ... 0x1200.jpg
  5. Id definitely watch out if you brought a pair however you do have the room for a pair to live with your other fish just set up a lot of different hidey holes etc around the bottom of the tank. Females are more colourful than males they get a bright pink/purple belly, however they may not colour up that much when kept away from males and not in breeding colours..

    Discus

This post might get replied to a bit more in the cichlid section Discus are awesome I kept some for a while but got sick of the daily water changes.. A few things I have picked up from here Get them bigish (40mm+) as they're more likely to survive and do well through shipping being introduced to a tank etc. Get 4-5+ so any aggression is spread ie if you get 2 and they're not a pair the big one will just smash the smaller one around and it wont eat etc. When they are younger they get stunted easily so most people raise them in BB tanks with water changes every day or every other day and lots of feeding. They will survive in a "normal" tank with less water changes but will get stunted and wont get as big etc. You can avoid all this work by getting big discus to begin with but then it goes back to cost.. Get your discus from a descent breeder and keep in touch with them they will give you descent advice on how to keep them (and help with any worming drugs or anything in the future) and you can guarantee you will get good fish to begin with. I know if I was ever after discus I would PM discusguru I have been to his place and seen his fish and also photos etc on here and he knows his stuff. Good luck and post some pics if you do go down that road. Neon aren't that suitable for tank mates as Bilbo has said they don't like the temperature also they tend to keel over quite quickly for no reason so you might have to keep adding more as you go and hunt for dead ones.
  7. lol ill retract my comment if they look like that The ones that I have seen (and based my comment on) looked nothing like that I think might have something to do with the stress etc of being transported and maybe they weren't settled or happy. Well worth the effort if you could get your hands on them, has anyone managed to breed them in NZ?
  8. I think there are some browns and teffle greens in NZ from memory they were on the lists and brought into petshops, unsure if they were wild caught or just browns etc but about as close as you can get.. I am not such a fan of the wild caught ones most of them while stunning in their own rights are nowhere near as colourful as the strains developed in aquariums.. Exception to that would be africans where they seem to be as colourful or more colourful in the lake.
  9. Phil has taken care of the Wanganui one, he emails with an updated spread sheet and contact list when new people join (obviously asks for permission) and sends regular updates, it is upto members to introduce themselves etc. I am unsure how much work it is for Phil but don't think too much just add a new email to the group and update the spreadsheet? Main advantage I can see is you have access to a bunch of local fish keepers in case you want to get in touch with anyone or need any help or arrange anything.. And you don't have the hassle or politics involved with actually running a club Phil has done a great job
  10. Yep I agree, I had a small patch on one of my cars that I tried to touch up with the colour coded paint.. No matter how many times I tried sanded it back etc etc it just never looked very good, if you want your bumper to look good then paint the whole thing and then it probably wont match the rest of the car (due to fade wear and tear etc). In the end on my car I took it into the panel beater and got it blended properly for $60 (cash job) at a paint shop maybe have a look around see if there are any friendly panel beaters willing to do you a deal..
  11. I did respond to your other post suggesting combining the 2 viewtopic.php?f=6&t=35095 is the link.. Definitely could be worth combining them just handy to have a list of people to email if you urgently need something or to arrange tank crawls etc
  12. Who knows what happened, its just a shame really.. I got a reply from him with roughly his plans and a proposal to meet up which I replied to and haven't heard back, only when I contacted him the other day to ask what was happening and he said he had canned it due to attitude. Stella the Wanganui email list works really well have met some awesome people through that.. Maybe it could be extended to the Wanganui/Palmy email list?
  13. I have used salt and the white spot cure (Blue circle brand) at half strength with no problems with bristlenoses in the tank.
  14. That maybe the case I must admit I did send through a few questions that I had of him.. Wasn't being negative was just asking more of his plans etc.. I am sure that others might have done the same, he probably got bombarded with a heap of questions..
  15. I also don't know what the "typical manawatu attitude" is referring to? There are quite a few very motivated fish keepers here who are keen to jump on board or at least get together and see what happens... But it has been stopped? With everything in life there will be a few people who "take the mickey" but personally knowing the people on here it was just a good laugh, and reflection on all the dodgy looking fish deals done on the side of the road or out of motels. There is no reason to take offence at that, surely if there was any serious intention of going through with anything a few people having a laugh wouldn't be enough to put you off..
  16. The info that I read suggested treating with metro in the food, some sites say this is useless (as per tHEcONCH's suggestions) seems the info differs alot so who knows what to do really? The only common thing I have found on these sites is to not let your fish get it by doing regular water changes feeding a varied diet etc etc, this doesn't help when your fish do get it though? If I was you I would do a google search and make up your own mind. I have done a bit of research on it and been recommended by very experienced fish keepers who have done heaps of research etc and they recommend treating with metro and also metro as a prevention. I have never treated it or had a fish with it so have no idea maybe tHEcONCH can help you.
  17. Decapsulated brine shrimp is also a very good food for the guppy fry, and you will get amazing growth rates with it too also no need to crush it up. As with everything variety is good so feed some decap and some crushed flake etc
  18. I heard back from him too, but he said there was no interest "typical manawatu attitude" apparently and nothing was happening... It was a shame really as there are alot of us around here that are quite keen and all get along would have been interesting to see what could have happened.
  19. Haven't used the granumeat as I mainly keep africans, but I have used the granugreen and that was ok, I only used a small one and fed it with lots of other food though.. If its turning the water redish then it might have some sort of excess stuff in it, maybe phosphates or something like that? I was having massive trouble with green water with a food that I was using because it was full of phosphates, unsure what causes red water though..
  20. Depends on heaps of things.. They would probably quite happily breed in a 1ft tank but would quickly pollute/over populate it. I would say min of 2ft so they have a little room.
  21. Ghostknife do you have any electrical knowledge (ie enough not to smoke yourself?). Sounds like there are some good ideas out there, sounds like you have already made sure the washing machine is at fault by using the dryer in the same plug. I would be checking for fuses or power type relays etc maybe even your mains plugs.. The few faulty washing machines I have had have never died completely they have always had flashing lights/beeping/random displays, if yours is all of a sudden not displaying anything then maybe it is something that might be simple to fix, or it could have just smoked itself completely. Have you tried googling the name of your washing plus various other keywords "fixing" "broken" "wont turn on" etc etc, sometimes you luck upon someone who has had the same problem and posted a fix.. Maybe even ring around the local washing machine fixers see if you can gleen any free info off them, sometimes they're so flat out they don't mind helping out for free. Good luck I love figuring out how to fix my own stuff..
  22. lol so your saying to give the fish a different diet and it will clear the HITH up? Surely something will have to be done to actually treat it... Think about it.. Yes it is commonly known that certain fish are susceptible to it, and contributing factors are poor water quality, poor diet etc etc, but once you have it you have to treat it with something and that is metro, a few of those links are from last year, has the treatment or knowledge of HITH changed that recently?
  23. Damn that's alot of babies Good work you might loose a few raising them, glad to see you aren't still calling them borelli.. If you want some microworms send me a message your more than welcome to come out and grab some.. Be very careful with the egg mix it fouls the tank up very fast. I don't know what species of daphnia we have here I know I have the larger ones, I tried the whole sticking daphnia in with my cockatoo babies letting them breed and the cockatoo's would eat the baby daphnia but it didn't work gradually all the daphnia died. You wont have to hatch the brineshrimp you can use decap or finely crushed flake they will eat it but you wont get the same growth rates. Buckets - who knows maybe warehouse or something like that? Are you after something to setup your daphnia in? Rumour has it that the true Borelli are very hardy and can go in colder water, I probably wouldn't try it with the steel blues if I wanted them to live, but hypothetically speaking if I had say 90 odd fry I might chuck half a dozen in and see how they go, IMO they probably wont do so well below 20C.. If you could get them to live int he same temp they should be fine with paradise fish. You should be able to raise those fry in a 120L tank however you will have to do large daily water changes to keep the waste down otherwise you will stunt them. Best plant for low light and for fry is java moss, I have it in all my fry tanks it contains all sorts of good stuff for them to munch on and it grows with low light also doesn't require to be planted, you could also try indian fern. Peat is awesome for softening the water for breeding tetras etc. I might be interested in some fry, really looking for a female for my steel blue male but might have to start with fry. Will see what happens
  24. Hey Stella add me, the same thing was done over wanganui way, maybe palmy people could join that one as well? The wanganui one has already worked out for me have got some gear I wanted and met some awesome people
  25. I think the fish should be named on the tanks however can fully understand why the manager or whoever is in charge wouldn't do it.. I don't think that steel blue is actually a proper recognised sc name anyway is it? And it wouldn't have to be on the list if the overseas exporters and nz importers decided they were borelli even if they aren't.. Its a shame that everyone cant just do things right lol We have soo many nice appisto's on the list and we get sent randoms
