Congrats guys, not that I expected anything else either Awesome pic of the female too.. How big are they now?
-
Awesome photos guys cheers for sharing good to see the tanks are all immaculate as always It looks like the breeding is going well for you!
-
Have to agree with all of the above that is a very nice tank! It will look even nicer with tropheus in it
-
If it is bacterial then it will be contagious, but should require a weakness to affect them (ie a wound or stress etc) either way I would remove the affected fish and any others that show it..
-
Is it fluffy? I would suspect some sort of bacterial infection do you have any antibiotics? Its a shame you just drove through I have some here that would have probably worked quite well you could have had

Roughly going on the prices I work on it is an alright deal.. I usually work on brand new prices for a tank at $1 per litre wholesale, obviously you can go up from there depending on the mark up etc applied.. The price also depends on the quality of the job (if glass is second hand etc) and the thickness of the glass used.

While you could get a UV and all sorts of other chemical things to sort it out you are probably better (and it will be cheaper) to find out why it is happening and fix that.. If it is brown water then it could be your driftwood leaching into the tank? They do this for a while, I have heard carbon helps reduce this but haven't verified this, if this is the cause then you can either remove your driftwood and boil it to try remove the tannins or wait. If your water is a green colour then it could be some sort of algae in the water, this is caused by an excess of something, usually nutrients or light. Have you tried changing the food you are using on this tank? I had problems with green water and traced it back to the food I was using being too full of phosphates. Where are you getting your water from for your water changes?

$800 whole sale would equate to a sale price of around $1800 most shops do 100% + gst for mark up.. But have seen animates stores do 150% total so guess it depends on the shop If they were on a suppliers list I would say that one of the mythical breeders who has been laying low hiding behind smoke and mirrors has decided to release them there to keep prices up. As Phoenix said I doubt you would find males and females for sale. I wonder if any wholesaler would take the risk at $800 a fish?

Awesome tank Mark Did you introduce Mr brown hap? How is he getting along? Oh and where is the pic of the red shoulder breeding tank

You are on the right track Up the temp to speed up the life cycle and treat with salt (even rock salt from supermarket is good). The blue circle whitespot cure is one of the best I have found if you do go and buy meds but have found salt works well.

Yeah a second filter is an advantage in case one fails, although I am yet to have that happen when I haven't noticed and fixed it without any losses it is still a risk. I don't think that adding more filters means less water changes. We do water changes to reduce the amount of nitrates in our tank as that is the only way to remove them. The amount of nitrates in your tank depends on the stocking level in your tan, adding more filters will still only convert the amount of ammonia produced in your tank into the same amount of nitrates. Assuming you have a large enough bio load to convert the amount of ammonia produced in your tank the only thing adding more filters will achieve is to remove more gunk from the tank. This is of course assuming you aren't using any fancy additives as I have no idea what stuff is out there and don't really want to go down that road.

Well I have successfully ran a fully stocked 4ft tank (240L) with a jebo 819 (1200LPH) with weekly to 2 weekly water changes and never had a problems? What aspects of filtration would make you suggest this filter would be insufficient? It would be turning over the tank volume at 4 times an hour (404 is 1300LPH empty around 1000LPH tank would only hold around 200L with rocks and not filled to top etc). I have also had no trouble starting my 404 I just pump that priming handle until water comes out the outlet and plug it in? I am not saying that a bigger canister or 2 of them wouldn't be better but I am saying that a 404 would do the job and probably do it well, it would be even better with an internal filter to pick up any extra gunk.
-
Yeah as I said in your other post undergravels and africans is no good as they dig them up making them useless I would remove it and keep it handy sometimes they are good for temp tank dividers. I wouldn't go with an internal alone, it would probably work alright but I would be inclined to do alot of water changes and it would require cleaning quite often. I have found internals work quite well in the same tank as an external. I have an FX5 on my tank and they are wicked, but I also ran it on 2 externals, you would only need one if you were going to have a light-medium stocking level. Also again I am going to ask how many litres your tank is, I have seen 5ft tanks with as little as 200L how many litres it is is very important for fish stocking and filtration. If you don't know how to work it out just post the dimensions and we can for you. The "fluval pump" pegwood was looking at was a fluval 404 I just found it on trademe and recognised the wording from the first post. A 404 would be a good start to filtering your tank especially if you brought the 2000LPH internal as well.

They said the reserve is $180 which I would say is good for the size of the tanks with a stand and heaters and fish etc obviously what it actually goes for depends on bidders, if you want a bargain maybe ask for a buy now it might be reasonable. It will be interesting to see what it goes for, good luck..
-
Some of us probably assumed from previous posts that pegwood was looking for a filter for their tank..
-
Very Sad... RIP
-
We will both be there with the kids again See everyone on Sunday.
-
Yeah what they said.. How many LPH is it, and what size is your 5ft tank?
-
Awesome pics, can definitely see it in the last pic of him I have had the odd fish do the go skinny and die thing have tried all wormers etc when I have seen it but never been able to track down why? At least you have some young to carry on with.. Good luck with the syno's they would certainly be a challenge and something awesome to see Looks like you have a good start with the electra and empresses..
-
Fish look good, the chilumbas look wicked certainly match up what I would expect for them.. azureus look very fryeri lol can't believe I missed the utaka spots guess I had been up all day and worked a nightshift.. They look very much like the fryeri that OOA had in Christchurch except they had no utaka spots, is the photo of a mature or young male? They seem very colourful in pics on the net. It would be wicked if you got the cockoo's to spawn are they specific on which fish they will breed with?
-
Firenz just posted pics of a nice african display here viewtopic.php?f=13&t=38110&start=45 that has plants, java fern and anubais (sp?) do well
-
That tank would be a good african tank
-
That tank is wicked firenzenz I am blown away Thanks for sharing! Ill have a guess at what they all are.. I have no idea what the first pic is maybe chilumba? 2nd pic some sort of syno not my thing maybe cuckoo? 3rd pic is a male fryeri 4th is a very nice male lithobates 5th Dems 6th is a stunning rubins red peacock (please let me know where this one came from and if you are breeding them!)

If you and your husband want to go down the african route feel free to drop in and see me, I breed both yellows and electric blues and have plenty of african tanks I am always happy to talk about them and show you what I keep with them and what works.. There are a few pics of my fish and tanks here http://s47.photobucket.com/albums/f183/ryanjury/ I am not a fan of undergravel filters and they are no good in an african tank as the africans dig them up making them useless.. Also for a discus tank (unless you buy adults) you probably want to go with a bare bottomed tank to grow them out in as you can keep it cleaner.. Some say they are easy to keep, I think it is a case of they are very easy to keep alive but alot of work to get them to their full potential, ie fully grown up and coloured.

Congrats on finding a tank The size of the heater depends on the size of the tank I have seen 5ft tanks range in volume from 200-600+L depending on their height/width.. 1W per L is a rough guideline of what you should aim for but more wont hurt, it also pays in larger tanks to have 2 smaller ones so you have back up and also if one jams on it takes it longer to cook your fish and hopefully you can notice and save them.. I would recommend you spend a bit of money on a descent brand heater (I recommend Jager, aqua one, fluval etc but others will comment I am sure). I am a bit of a cheap ass and a few years ago brought 6-7 jebo 300W heaters for $20ea brand new 3-4 went back i the first year under warantee broken and now a few years later only one still goes and the temp in that tank ranges quite a few degrees by itself. All the second hand ones of a descent brand are still going strong. Filters are down to personal preference I like the cheaper aqua one CF1200's they are big and work very well and also very well priced.. Others will swear by eheim they are better filters but probably not worth the 2-3times more you will pay for them its over to you really Your tank doesn't have to "settle" as such a few days with filters and heaters running to let things stabalise would be good. What fish are you planning for this tank? With a tank as large as a 5ft tank you wont really have to cycle it just add a few fish at a time feed lightly and keep up with water changes you should have enough volume that you wont get nasty ammonia spikes etc. Plants can be added whenever you want to. I would also say that there seems to be alot of problems with disease at local petshops so a quarantine tank (or buying fish from good sources) would be recommended.
