  1. Hi All, I have been roaming around this site for a few days now not realising that hey wait a minute you havent yet introduced yourself formerly, how rude! Anyway all you guys and girls, I am an ex-South African who for the past 6ish years been in Europe and then here, therefore due to my movemnts have not made it possible to keep an aquarium. Now that my wife and I have a little girl of 1yr 6ish mths I have decided to introduce here to fishies, (the keeping kind) and she is loving it, (not sure if I used her as an excuse to get my 4 footer).... anyway New Zealand is great and all you Kiwi's arefriendly and helpful therfore brilliant........ I am looking forward to everything life has to offer here including the fishies? P.S. I do miss African tanks! however gouramis and tetra's are what the little one is into and a pleco who is getting tooooo big!
  2. Can anyone please explain it in simple terms. i.e. I have a ph tester, if my ph is high I use Peat Moss, if it is low I use shells, ..... is this correct? What and how does KH play a role thanks?
  3. I will try this this weekend, can I just know how many parts baking soda to water..... thanks
  4. Thanks, that sets my mind at rest... bring on the clowns let them take care of the snail mobs....
  5. How long do you have to do the baking soda / hot water trick?
  6. Is baking soda harpful to fish?
  7. Like what, If I get them I don't want them harvesting by aquascape setup...
  8. Is it okay to put sinkers in freshwater tanks?
  9. How long would it take on average for a dritwood to sink? Is there any way of speeding up the process? The reason is I have to finish planting 80% of my aquascape tank this weekend in order to get the gosso to thrive, etc and hopefully the riccia and java moss tied to the wood! Please let me know if there is a smart way.... cheers
  10. Tom, Ill possibly post some pics this weekend....
  11. Are clown loaches good guys in a community tank......
  12. Are these guys okay in a community tank and can I please know the ammonia or concentration of ammonia to use....... thanks!
  13. I have a pair of guppys and they dont lay eggs, I have a pair of bottom feeders / catfish, the albino ones and I have baby snails which I think hitched a ride on one of my plants. This in a small 1'x1'x1' tank. I now have another 4 foot which I am busy aquascaping.. I want to move these plants over but want to try and not take the little buggers over (snails). Over and above I find there is a couple blobs of jelly with eggs in them. The largest snail is no bigger than a 5 cent..... What do I do if they are fish eggs? if they are not what do I do to prevent this from taking over my tank?
  14. get some fresh water shrimp, they suppose to do well in brackish water and tasty.....mmmmmmmmmm
  15. Tom, Just wanted you to know the java is looking good wrapped arounbd my drift, Its already looking richer witht he C02 I have going thro' my powerhead. About Daltons Propogating Sand.... its looks great in the tank, hower took about 1.5 hrs to clean and only at the end did I figure out the fastest way, Take the bigest dish (60cm dia) and shallow ( 10cm) put in some sand and use a hose with a good waterhose diffuser and dig into the sand, due to the shallow, large surface area the sand / clay will just roll off........
  16. Has anyone heard of this?..........saw it here, http://www.aquatics-online.co.uk/Z079192.asp I have some friends coming over from the UK and thought I might try this, any comments.... Carbo Plus Electronic CO2 System Carbon Dioxide Supply without Gas Bottles The Zac Carbo Plus consists of an electronic controller which is fitted outside of the aquarium, and a Stainless Steel and Carbon Sandwich which sits in the water. Guarantee : 2 years on the control unit, 6 months on the sandwich Please note : the carbon plate is considered a "Consumable Item" by the manufacturer and is therefore not covered under any granted guarantee
  17. Thanks alot for that, can you please post your brew for the 3 to 4 week change and if I use 2 bottles will this recipe still be fine and how long would it last......do you regulate a diy system,
  18. Bottom line is I know the pure CO2 bottle system is better. No time consumption, etc. etc. etc. and I know the yeast system is cheap, etc. etc . etc. but cause I dont have the cash right now (alls gone on setting upa new tank) can somone who has used both systems can you please rate out of 100% the effectiveness of both systems, its seems effectiveness depends on the diffuer system used. How many 2lt coke bottles would I need for a 240 litre tank. and it seems the best diffuser from all that I read is a spiral thing-a-magig ere you don't need a bubble counter. Can some one please post a pick of this. O. Yes I promise to put up pics of my DIY system due the fast my wifes a chemistry teacher therefore she helping setup one with proper stoppers and stuff...... P.S. Thanks Ballistic, Tom and all you other guys with the invaluable advice in setting up my new tank....
  19. Where can I have a look at a copy of this...
  20. Sorry forgot to say the 3 bags cost me $27,00 in total......
  21. I bought the last 3 bags from Palmers in Pakuranga, Try another Palmers if you have no luck then contact Daltons themselves to either deliver to you or to let you know of your nearest supplier. Heres there contact details, http://www.daltons.co.nz/contact/contact.html
  22. I am using "Daltons Propogating sand" (thanks to the guys here) and "Red Sea Flora Root" and "Red Sea Floro Gro". Put 1/3 of the sand down then the floro root and then 2/3 of the sand. every water change add some floro gro. Thats what I am setting up this weekend. Still scratching my head with regards to Co2, i.e. DIY or bottle cylinder (costly). I think it all comes down to how well you defuse the CO2. Hope this helps!
  23. My gourami was blowing bubbles, etc. and then a few days later it died. I read somewere thereafter that a couple gouramis in a small tank is not good cause the larger one will continue to peck the smaller one until it gets sick and than dies.... I gues thats what happened to mine....
