  1. I'll go with the light starved Java moss (unless its a trifid)
  2. Tell the doctor you have amoebic dysentery and you may get flagel which is the trade name
  3. Pegasus, are you suggesting that builders talk in mm and dressmakers talk in cm?
  4. The colouration of the RTV is probably from treatment with malachite green or methylene blue and is not usually a problem but the peeling is and I would reglue the whole thing (will only cost $10.00) unless your a big gambler.
  5. I have just joined the NZKA. What do you fellas and fellesses charge for killie eggs?

    killies

They are also young when they buy them. I was selling Nothos to a wholesaler at 6 weeks. There is not many fish you can do that with.
  7. I have a youg pair of double red cockatoos which I have just moved from a community to a seperate tank to try and breed. They came from Redwood aquatics in Christchurch.
  8. I used to breed a lot of angels and raised them in bare tanks to start with. I used to seperate male and female corys and feed them well then spawn them in the bare tank and rear them with the angels. They were realy good bottom cleaners and they were all fed brine shrimp straight off and did well. If conditioned well they will spawn on demand if you give them a water change at night and drop the temperature you will have eggs next morning. There is always a market for them too.
  9. It depends what you treat it with. You could use Furan from the pet shop. Most antibiotics are expensive and you need to get them from a vet. Furan should not damage your plants
  10. I doesn't matter realy what the results are, the nitrogen is being oxidized to nitrate during the cycling process and that process is not complete yet. Your tank is a living thing and living things develop at different rates. Time should cure all.
  11. If it is leaking and the glue is real old I would cut it to bits and reglue the whole thing before you put it in the lounge. The RTV becomes more "brittle" with age. If the RTV looks OK I would cut the existing seals out and replace them. Check the glass to glass glue lines they should be continuous glue not hit and miss. Use the bomb sticks to light the fire. RTV is an adhesive not a filler
  12. The latest is a short fat golden ram bred in Holland, looks like a wee oranda---ugly. I saw some in a pet shop in Christchurch.
  13. I have a 4ft tank with 2 x 3ft flouros and two 15 watt incandescents which are on all the time to prevent the shock when the flouros come on automatically at 5.30am. At the moment the flouros are on 15 hours/day. Light intensity is one factor but the depth of water is more important in my view. I have a growlux in the front and daylight in the back. Works OK for me. The incandescents are on dimmers but at present are on full strength---looks like moonlight at night. My tank is 6oomm high. The plants have to be pretty well established to get away with 15 hours/day, I have worked up to that.
  14. I use a one sided razerblade, it is thinner and start where you can slide it between both bits of glass
  15. Do you use under gravel heating cables or are you measuring the temperature with an electronic thermometer?
  16. You may be correct but it was descrbed as a small white lump and a cyst. Columnaris is usually more like cotton wool than a lump, hence the name.
  17. It would be pretty hard to get chloromyceton these days I think. They try to restrict its use so it will remain effective against cholera. I don't know about the white around the mouth but colour fading in neons (especialy blue) is usually neon disease (plistophoria) treated with formaldehyde and TB symptoms are wasting away, treated with antibiotics. Both treatments are pretty inefective.
  18. I would agree with Shae. Dont change the water but introduce the fish slowly
  19. Waterplantz (John Peters) sells it on Trademe. I have also seen it for sale with the bog plants at the local nursery. Failing that go bush young man its a native.
  20. It is a nitrofying bacteria so it can get its own nitrogen
  21. A lot of imported fish are pretty stressed out on arival, particularly from Singapore. There is a pretty high demand on land and water and therefore Singapore acts more as a transfer station holding fish that have been bred in surrounding areas where there is cheaper land for fish farms. Water is also at a premium so doesn't get changed that often and fish are usually overstocked. Not many people in NZ have the patience to breed good quality fighters and take them to full fin development before selling them.
  22. As much as you can get away with and avoid an algae bloom. Your plants will need to be properly established before they will realy start using nutrient. With CO2 the process should be quicker. Start slowly and increase as you can.
  23. Hopefully not but it might slow them up a bit
