  1. Thanks, I learn something every day
  2. I am using it at the moment. I have cleaned up one tank and am now on to number 2. It is copper sulphate as stated so I am trying to catch fish that don't like copper and I very cleverly built 3 caves into the landscape and they are hiding in there. Patience Al.
  3. Sorry to be thick. I know that pH is minus the log of the hydrogen ion concentration and 7 is neutral and coca cola is 4.6 but what is KH?
  4. Alan, your post brings back memories (I hope it is not the name) When we got going in Christchurch all those years ago I had a fishhouse so offered to obtain fish from the North Island. I bought books so people could see pics and place orders I bought a good selection then many people said "I don't want that, its not like I thought and I got stuck with about 6 varieties I had not planned on. When I figured out how to breed them they all wanted them cheap. It must be either the name or the killies. I wish you well, hang in there.
  5. I could be wrong but I am working on the assumption that it can utalise nitrogen dissolved in the water and so that should not cause a bloom. Also CO2 should encourage the plants to take up phosphate and starve the blue green. Just curious.
  6. I have built 3 caves in my community tank to breed some cave spawners. I got a clown loach to keep down snails but I am in the process of getting rid of the snails permanently. this involves taking all the fish out. If I put it back will it eat the eggs of spawning fish or will it be OK back in there?
  7. In a previous life when I was breeding killies like gardneri we used to add cyclops for the same reason and people often used to put one in a tube of eggs when posting them. Worked well.
  8. I have never seen that problem with goldfish but I have had it with angels and we called them belly sliders. They move about on the bottom on their side but never rise up. That was caused by the temperature being too low. Hard to imagine that being a problem for goldfish unless there was too quick a drop in temperature for some reason.
  9. The salt makes them produce more slime which helps them as well. don't forget to get rid of the salt slowly as well as adding it sowly.
  10. Formalin is pretty good for treating some things but it has some limitations. The white precipitate that forms on the bottom of the bottle is highly toxic to fish and it can cause temporary sterility in fish. It is generally used for viruses and flukes. The pet shop should have either brooklands mixture or furan if you want to use chemicals. I have used analytical grade formaldehyde but I wouldn't use it for white spot. I would change pet shops if that is all they have for white spot.
  11. I think some people are just trying to point out that electricity is dangerous unless you know exactly what you are doing. If it was that easy it wouldn't take 5000 hours to become a sparky.
  12. cory eggs are in a sort of jelly. You have the same problem as me. I treated all my plants with double dose snail rid (copper sulphate) and it killed all the snails but not the eggs ---now overloaded with them. Tried snail trap and thought that was working (20 odd a day) bought a medium sized clown loach and still got heaps. Presently trying to catch all fish so I can dose the hell out of it. I am a bit reluctant to treat it with discus, cockatoo and clown loach (among others) in there.
  13. I think it thrives in eutrafied conditions and since it is a nitrofier I think it will be too much phosphate and CO2 which brings it on. I understand the H2O2 drives off the CO2. I would be interested if people using CO2 injection have problems or it has to be in conjunction with excessive phosphate.
  14. A lot of red or red/brown plants sold are realy pot plants and would be better off on grannies window ledge. Riccia is great for live bearers or fish that don't like strong light like many killies but acts like sun block if you are trying to grow plant. People talk about so much light per litre but the more important thing is depth of water. If you have adequate light in a 300mm tank you will need 10 times as much in a 600mm tank not twice as much. By this time you are getting too much light in the top 300mm. That is why most things in fish keeping are a compromise and you need to experiment and see what works for you. I think your tank depth would be great for plant but will need more light unless you grow plant that will get by without much. Good luck.

Most of the plants sold are realy bog plants. Anything other than a true aquatic should do OK.
  16. It was possible to get your local power authority to check your house for free or at a low cost. I think you could be surprised what they find. I was.
  17. I have wired a complete fishhouse for quarantine with a light over each of 40 tanks and a 12 volt pilot light system, plugs for filters, hot water system and all. I got a sparky in and said what I intended and he left all the correct wiring them came back and connected it up. The inspecter new it had not been done by a sparky because I used more clips and left more wire at the board than a sparky would. The combination of electricity, metal stands, water and the fact that you can't earth an aquarium is not a good one. I would say: Do what you can but get it checked by an expert. Good luck
  18. It is a while since I have use UV, but the penetration through water is not good and the penetration through green water is decidedly bad. It will also kill a lot of bugs that are actually beneficial. There are more good bugs out there than bad.

You could maybe use the ledge for some bog plants. You want a filter that picks up water at one end and puts it back at the other, which probably means a remote external

I find the combination works well but you have to go a bit easy on the light until the plant is well established. The plant and the algae like the same stuff as they are both plants but when the plant is established it seems to beat the algae to the nutrient. At present I have two 3 footers on a 600mm tank going 15 hours a day and the plants are loving it with no algae problems.

Go to lamp specialists 10 Stevens Street by Jade stadium. I got a 4ft light and two tubes for about the same price as a growlux in the pet shop. I use a growlux type in the front and natural white in the back--- seems to be a good combination for plant growth. They only take cash,no eftpos etc. The growlux also brings out red and blue in neons etc thats why I put it in the front
  22. What sort of heater is it? If it is a jager it may be set wrong.
  23. Your tube looks like it has been there a while
