  1. It looks bloody awful like it has been sealed by someone with free RTV and big fingers but it probably wont fall apart. You could cut it out witH a razorblade and reseal it with a smaller finger. It is hard to see but it looks like the glass to glass glueing is OK.
  2. I went into the fastways office in Christchurch and asked if they would send turtles and they said no. When I pointed out that they were accepting fish they said they intended to stop that as soon as possible. So I said no more. The post office have signs up all over the place saying no live stuff accepted so I don't label it.
  3. It is pretty difficult to cut small bits off to trim glass particularly if it is thick glass, usually ends up worse because you have to crumble it off with pliers and you get a ragged edge.
  4. I agree, the only way is to not label them or they refuse to take them.
  5. A craft knife would do it. I use a one sided razor blade from the hardware store, I find them thinner and they go between the glass easier. Try to start your cut where there is the most clearance between the glass.
  6. I have some of each but I also have an acurate digital thermometer to check them against. Most new ones are reliable if you take note of wether they can be submerged. They don't run well when wet. They are not very accurate though. I have just bought two electronic thermastats at over $140 each and they are still only acurate + or- 1deg.
  7. No trouble. You would need to order the glass now and they will cut it between xmas and new year. At the moment they are working 12 hour shifts to get through the work. I will pm you with the details
  8. Thanks Caryl--I'll have another go, when I have a couple of days to spare. Hope you can follow the pic.
  9. It would probably be easier to cut the piece off the tank, get it drilled and glue it back othewise you better have a spare arm and a leg
  10. The thermostats are not accurate and usually don't give a temperature the same as it is set for. This can be for all sorts of reasons. It also takes a while for the thermostat to change temperature after you reset it. All you can do is test it agains a reasonaly accurate thermometer. I have two identical ones which are both set to the minimum (18 deg C) and one operates at 25.5 deg and the other at 26.5deg)
  11. I have no problem posting pictures on trademe, how come this is such a challenge? Perhaps I should make one and sell it. I did a course on computers but it was unfortunately not an obstacle course.
  12. I give up-- you are welcome to come and have a look-- I will plug in the jug
  13. If it doesn't work this time use your imagination.
  14. Could you explain how to do that in sign language I am having trouble hearing you on the phone.
  15. I think I will just stick to proving Einstein was wrong.
  16. Atatched (hopefully) is a diagramn of a brineshrimp hatcher which gives clean shrimp the easy way. Eggs in one end and shrimps out the other. It is a tank 450 x 300 x 300 with three baffles but could be bigger or smaller depending on your needs. The lid and whole tank are painted black except for an area at one end at the bottom which has a light to attract the shrimps. the unhatched eggs and shells are left behind and the shrimps are removed with a dip tube and seived. Element and aeration at input end and put some eggs in each time you take shrimp out. v
  17. Thanks, I read that, was hoping there was a way that was less of a mission, will give it a go then for relaxation I will prove that the theory of relativity is an urban myth.
  18. You are correct with you description. You could add more baffles but I only have three. I will load a description and diagamn when someone explains how. I have taken a photo of a diagramn and thats as far as I got.
  19. I will post a description and picture of a brine shrimp hatcher as soon as someone explains how to do it. I have taken a photo of a drawing but am computer iliterate so words of one sylable would be great.
  20. I think I left a baffle out of the description. Photos will only show a black box so I will try and post a drawing.
  21. There is a very cheap tankmaker in Christchurch -- You. I have just ordered the glass for 2 x tanks 1200 x 450 x 400 from 10mm glass and one with six compartments all from new glass offcuts for $235.00.
  22. Eels certainly have teeth and they point backwards, as a friend found out when we were kids---trying to remove a fish hook---lost a bit of flesh off the fingy---panicked and pulled his finger out when it clamped on him.
  23. Same markings just 100 times more density of colour. The ones I was breeding were not that easy and were almost impossible to sell--probably why they are not around now.
  24. Being basically lazy and half handy with a piece of glass and RTV I made a brine shrimp hatcher and seperator. It is a 45 litre tank with baffles which seperate things out. First and third baffle from bottom to one third from top and second baffle from top to two thirds from top. Paint all outside including lid black apart from 100mm x 100mm area at collection end (at bottom) A light at clear end brings shrimp to that area to be removed with a dip tube. I made a funnel from a coke bottle and cut the centre out of the lid. Use the thread to hold your mesh in place and stand funnel in rest of bottle while draining. Add eggs one end and take out shrimp the other---lasts me 3-4 weeks before replacing brine but would depend on usage. Heater and airation at input end.
  25. Are the old ones still about?
