  1. A lot of the Echinodorus sp. flower under water as well but I would keep an eye on that plant as they are not realy aquatic plants and it may start to rot in a few weeks.
  2. if you look carefully you will probably find it is full of semi precious stones also.
  3. They originate from the gorges in the white cloud mountains in China where it is quite cold so they don't like water too warm. They are easy to get from hot to cold (just turn off the heater and let them cool down slowly) but from cold to hot you have to take a few days.
  4. In my experience they are not like most fish which you can condition up then spawn and get heaps of eggs. Regardless of condition they lay a few eggs and virtually all the time. They are not realy tropical fish and breed best and look best at lower temperatures. In Christchurch they will be starting to breed in outside ponds about now.
  5. I would have thought pot nitrate would be pretty difficult to obtain with its other uses.
  6. That is the bind ---less light for algae is also less light for plant and less plant growth to starve the algae. I found leaving the lights on worked best but took time. The siamese algae eaters work best when young and if you don't give them other food like algae tabs or vegetables.
  7. I would leave it about 3 weeks but it would also help to stir up the media a bit to help the filter to get started.
  8. You may get what you want from hydroponics supplies
  9. Belt and braces----leave the old one going as well as the new one until the new one is working properly.
  10. I may stand corrected but I would have thought that regardless of pH ammonia gas would disolve in water to form ammonium hydroxide and therefore ammonium ion and hydroxyl ion.
  11. Cardinals are not as prolific as neons and are harder to breed that is why they cost more (but on the good side they usually live longer)
  12. I was in that place in Bleneim Rd today which sells fountains/water features and plants etc. I think it is called the water garden. They had tablets on the counter for water plants. Someone else may know how good the are.
  13. Ammonia is required to feed the bacteria that move it to nitrite and nitrate, without that the bacteria cannot become established. It is a balance and excess can be removed with water changes until the bacteria become established and the tank is properly cycled.
  14. I would stop adding the pet shops profits and just add fresh water until the bacterial balance can be established and the tank has cycled properly. Doing water changes will remove the ammonia until the bacteria that move it to nitrite and nitrate can become established.
  15. I think it is sandstone rather than limestone and therefore may not make the water as hard
  16. Why are you adding tonic salt etc?
  17. Using O2 allows you to put more fish in each bag and saves on freight. They will be OK with less fish in a bag and will cost a bit more because of the weight of the extra water.
  18. If you have heavy root feeding plants they will require food in the pots rather than in the water. You may be better to add food to the pots to feed the plants rather than to the water which will feed the algae.
  19. The aquatic mix and additives from the pet shop are basically clay which provides the micronutrients for your plants. Potting mix will add a lot of soluble macronutrients like nitrate and phosphate that will cause an algae bloom.
  20. I find sand best. Use aquatic mix or unwashed river sand with micronutrients added then hold it down with washed courser sand and fill the tank carefully
  21. Have a look at the plantgeek site. If the plant you want is Glossostigma elatinoids I can send you enough to get srarted for the cost of fastpost ($4.30). If it does not have enough light it will grow upwards (as seen on plantgeek) Mine is grown emersed in natural light so someone else will have to advise if your lighting is good enough. PM me with your address if you want a bit to try or Waterplantz sells larger quantities on trademe.
  22. Mine are Japanese and don't go in the water but always come out when I mist spray the land area. They are only about half grown.
  23. I have a heater in mine set at the minimum of 18 deg but I think they may be better without it.
  24. The chances of the parents eating them are transversley proportional to you winning lotto. They can be removed and reared if you want them or you can watch the parents raise/eat them.
  25. You can drop the water level in the tank while treating so there is less water to change. E.G. drop the water to half and change 90% --refilling to half.
