  1. I have bought R. indica from at least 3 sources and grown them next to rotundifolia and they have all turned out to be the same. Likewise with wallichii until this lot. No iron and no CO2 and 80watts of 7500K flouros for 16 hours/day. Both plants grown next to each other in the same tank. This is the problem with using common names like oxygen weed, moneywort, pennywort etc. I think indica is the old misname for rotundifolia which is also called roundifolia. I have only been able to flower one sort so cannot be too sure. Hopefuuly in the spring I might get both into flower and see if there is a difference
  2. Red pine I think (Mayaca fluviatilis according to Cesarz on the other post)
  3. Cesarz---thanks for that. You have been quiet of late.
  4. That is why I use rio filters. You get a sponge without the air bubbles. It is not the air bubbles that do the work with a sponge filter it is the water between the bubbles, so if you want to retain CO2 use a mechanicl sponge filter. In my opinion it would be a waste of time using aeration with CO2.
  5. It is actually white. the hew has come about because it is under growlux light. Tried to reduce it but only got rid of some. It is a smallish flower about the same size as the ordinary swords (amazonicus and bleheri.)
  6. rotundifolia means round leaf as does roundifolia (same plant I think)
  7. If you feed it enough chocolate it will become a lace angel.
  8. I think it would be big enough until they become adult and decide to pair up then there is a bit of scrapping over territory.
  9. Oscars and large plecs don't mix well with plants. I think people often get too excited about removing gunk. I remove it every few months and usually just do water changes and clean the glass.
  10. Rotala wallichii. Rotala rotundifolia. Both plants are grown next to each other in the same aquarium with 80watts of flourescent lighting. wallichii tends to scarlett and rotundifolia to red under good lighting.
  11. Ruffled amazon sword flower (Echinodorus martii).
  12. Pooey is good---your plants will love it. Just get rid of what you can get at.
  13. I have a number of heavily planted tanks and I use rio filters. The only reason I use them is that they are all the same and if I want to reset up an old or set up a new tank I just swap the sponge parts over with one already operating to get the bugs. The other use is to stop temperature layering (they are on the bottom and pointing the outlet up) Aeration drives off CO2 and should be limited. When water supplies have a problem with excess iron the cheapest way to corect it is aeration because it takes the CO2 out and this is what is making it acid and keeping the iron in the ferrous and soluble state. The only planted tank I aerate is one completely enclosed in a cabinet in order to keep fresh air over the water and that is only light aeration. If you have no water movement you may encourage blue/green algae and plants that don't like water movement like cabomba can be placed in a "quiet" part of the tank. That is my reasoning, but you will have to do what works for you.
  14. You will need to make sure they are old enough and have enough condition to hibernate.
  15. I think I have seen it at the warehouse.
  16. I don't have any filters on the baby turtles as a newly hatched turtle has no mass and little brains and would be put into orbit. Adults have an Eheim external 900 litre/hour on a 1.6 metre tank. Having no filter makes more work but also means they get looked at more often while cleaning.
  17. Rotala wallichii is almost identical to R. rotundifolia except for the much richer colour. I think this came up previously and plantman had the answer. I think your pic may be too fine in the leaf to be Rotala although it does vary a lot with conditions (particularly light) I sold some on Trademe to someone on this site a while ago (auction 95210922) After many times buying plant that perported to be that I finally got some and grew it in the same tank right next to rotundifolia (auction 95210509). I use the auctions which have finished as a way to get a picture of the different plants grown in the same conditions.
  18. Actually lake Brunner is full of red pine and Matai. (sank to the bottom and now being recovered)
  19. You will need to get some green water going---they have very small fry. The dwarfs are a bit like male fighters---they are pretty mature when imported usually.
  20. You are on to it. You need to condition them up as well. Oysters and bubbly.
  21. I have never worried about it. I try to keep the water reasonably clean and have heavy filtration on my adults. They are not like fish and have no gills so it does not worry them the same.
  22. I had conventional flouros in the lid of a cabinet and spent megabucks to replace them with fittings with electronic ballasts and the heat output was much the same (contrary to advice)
  23. Many drugs come as tablets or capsules and are a convenient way to measure small quantities and it also gives a better shelf life but are put into solution before use. Your kitchen scales will not measure 50 milligrams.
  24. I have used acid cure RTV to glue glass, laminated glass, marble, slate and pottery, all without any problems.
  25. Halswall quary stone would be good.
