  1. Driftwood or almond leaves lower the pH by the chemical way---it is just different chemicals. I have never used almond leaves but have used tea bags, peat, dried oak leaves and oak bark.
  2. NZ food safety requirements are for food labelling for human consumption and are contained in the Food Act and Regulations. They only apply to food for human consumption.
  3. Who has a phD in photoloading then? I'm still in preschool
  4. Most Local Authorities try pretty hard to keep the pH slightly alkaline. A pH of 6 would eat holes in a copper hot water cylinder in no time short plus cause dezincification to your brass taps etc where the zinc is eaten away leaving a honeycomb of copper that is next on the chomping list. You don't want to be near a phone at a Council office if the water is acid for too long.
  5. They look like a pair to me. They don't always get it right for the first few times. The genetics may give some strange lookig offspring, it is not a combination I would breed.
  6. Why would they export them to NZ when we only spend small change. Places like the USA who would buy every week thousands of times what we spend in a year are way ahead of us in the queue.
  7. Certain strains of Hep C are curable but not cheaply or easily either. Hep B can be an STD as well as by transfer of blood like Hep C. There are many different types of Hep but NZ does not test for them. In fact testing for Hep C is relatively new. They used to test for Hep B and if that was negative they would say it was Hep A. I investigated many cases of Hepatitis at one of the local prisons that were all transmited by dirty syringes but because they came up negative for Hep B they were notified as Hep A. Today they would have been notified as Hep C. Needle transfer or through contaminated blood transfusion is the usual with Hep C. and B although I have seen cases of STD with B. Have a good weekend ya all
  8. People are paranoid about aids but it is less infectious than many other diseases and is of little risk to people who have a boring weekend.
  9. If it is flicking off objects it is usually an external parasite anoying them (whitespot, velvet, skin flukes) look for signs of these. Best way is in the dark with a torch.
  10. I would feed the whiteworms out as I don't think they would keep too well.
  11. I wouldn't put a hole in it unless you want to risk them all over your fridge
  12. Waterplantz (John Peters) sells a few cold water natives on trademe. Most would need pretty good light on a tank.
  13. I bought some from bubble and squeek a while ago and still have some left (only read this after you left)
  14. What can the computer do to the filter but turn it on and off and tell you when it needs cleaning. I will buy one when they make it so the computer cleans it.
  15. I have a 4 ft tank in 6 sections and heated by a 300 watt pad made be argus. It works well and you vary the temperature by having different depths of water.
  16. That amount of light is above average. You will usually get algae problems with a new tank because it takes a while for the plants to become established and start taking up the nutrient. What you have is strong light and no nutrient take up. Patience grasshopper--use less light and wait until the plants get established, and do bigger water changes more often. Top ups don't help as they don't remove any nutrient. Don't add any ferts and remove the nutrient with water changes.
  17. Check his postal adress and see if he is in either Mt Eden or Paparoa
  18. It can be good looking stuff. The small amount of shell in some times can be of benefit when growing plants that like a bit of calcium and non acid water.
  19. Feed them as soon as the fry start free swimming but not before as they are feeding on their yolk sack till then..
  20. There is a system of producing chlorine by electrolysis to chlorinate the pool. You add salt to the pool and an electric current produces chlorine gas from the salt. It is the chlorine that does the job rather than the salt.
  21. Why do you need 145ft head? Just curious
