  1. are you closing down your tank??
  2. whose tank are these coming out of ? not trying to be nosey but this may influence the decision of established reefers as to whether to buy. thanks
  3. what is about the longest its safe/ or people have left without feeding?
  4. flushing is caused by back pressure (having pipe too far submerged) i drop my flow thru a 100 micron filter sock just above the water surface.(3000lts per hr) also you could drop it onto filter wool in a basket suspended likewise. (must change or rinse often to prevent nitrate buildup)
  5. ive got almost the identical setup. use the laguna 7, the eheim is no comparison. the 7 will also give a good deal of water flow even allowing for the head height. the flow rate chart on the 7s box is very accurate, i get 3000 lt hr from my sump directly downstairs. i sometimes use the 1262 to keep things in suspension in the sump so they can be skimmed.

    Lighting Upgrade

ive got the arcadia 3, 2x250 with 2x t8 actinics. im pretty happy at the moment with how is going on my 5 ft. definitely is less light at the ends which is where i tend to put more lps. i like the varience of light thru the tank, that could change tho as i increase sps
  7. in the realm of saltwater we tend to use rather different equation to work out average evaporation. i shall type this slowly so that all can follow it: 1. mark the waterline of the tank with a felt tip 2. mark the waterline again after the fan has been on for 24 hours. 3. measure the distance between the 2 marks, and then mutiply that by the length and breadth of the tank. this is how much water has evaporated in 24 hours ( this equation is a little less accurate for those people whose demented relatives drink from the tank ) as to the average cooling over an hour we tend to turn the fan on and look at a thermometer 8)

    Aquapods in NZ

if people think that the artificial manipulation of the market, by trying to force all business thru retailers will actually grow the market and then lower prices, well these people may end up sadly disappointed. it makes just as much sense in todays world as to try to reintroduce export licences, subsidies and other such artificial mechanisms to force people to spend their hard earnt dollars as others see fit. in the reality of the internet age it simply isnt gonna work. in fact the major bulk of my equipment was purchased direct from the importer/agent at the suggestion of the senior marine guy at an auckland retailer. go figure

    whats happened

that answer doesnt ring true when each shop is at the opposite end of the spectrum. i do spend alot of money in retail and direct as you yourself well know and am happy enough with the prices or i wouldnt have bought the items. im talking about standards of care and well being that a 5 year old can identify. if not having a profitable margin on livestock can justify low standard of care then the offenders should get out of the business and leave it to people that can do it.

freight can be a real killer, but would be cheaper if more than one person got together and ordered a couple. BE WARNED however that using this site to join with friends and reduce costs is now banned and any person caught doing such a thing faces a permanent ban. this also applies to anyone trying to buy anything except off a "Retailer", or someone recognised as an official retailer. also please dont attempt to discuss this policy in this forum as that is also banned. i just thought id post this friendly warning as the link in the saltwater section doesnt seem to go to the more severe announcement, which is in the announcement section. hopes this makes sense
  15. what sort of corals? do you run them continuously on 100%?
  16. will be the Cowrie. they are not usually reef safe especially as they get larger. i have kept small ones without issue and there may well be differences between types (as to whether they are safe or not)
  17. congratulations slappers and joze! how long have you been engaged?

    polyps

a section of some polyps has remained shut for @ 3 days so far. keeping a watch on them i discovered and removed a crab that had taken up residence under their rock. how long do they normally remain shut? anything to do with the crab?
  19. so you went from 15 to 20 watts. doesnt seem alot but its a little over 33% more light. good size water changes may be the next best thing you can do.
  20. someones quote awhile back has always stuck in my mind, "artificial salt is just striving to be like the real thing" its also great to get something for free in this hobby

    White cloudy tank

no, but my anemone decided to shift one day and crawled into a stream overnight. i woke to find the tank as cloudy as if a litre of milk had been tipped in.(visibility was 1/2 the distance to the back wall) i changed 1/2 the carbon and it cleared with no effects.
