I know how you feel regarding the sinking Carnivore pellet. We used to feed them to our bichir who loved the things but sadly they are no longer brought in to nz. I can recomend the sinking catfish pellets ( little white tub). Our bichir likes them and so does our knife fish. Bit more expensive but worth a go!

Thank you for the warm welcome everyone. Have started making my shopping list! Reef you say make new water when i get to my place. But will the coral, shrimp and snails be ok in brand new water? Jolliolli iv had a read of your thread. Very helpfull info in there. Also the refractometer. Now i know there is a realy expensive but reliable brand .. what is it and also what is an ok cheepy? that i can use in the mean time? Is there anything elce i need to add to my shopping list? oh salt ? redsea? And to all the people close to me who collect their own water is there any way i can come along for the ride one day.. just to see what it intails.

Tip Toes in to the salty forum... hello I mean Hello ! So i have crossed over to the dark side and i need a kick in the right direction please and no not back to the freshwater section plz I have been happly reading referance sites and other posts you have all made but i feel i need some one on one guidance and help because sadly as much as i like to think i know it all. Idont. So where to start. Well to tell you the truth some one has allready started it for me so i just need to learn everything! Simple as that. tell me everything.. lol jokes But realy could some one inform me on what are the best test kits to get. I allready have Ammonia, nitrite ,nitrate and ph for salt so i will be needing phosphate and magnesium? ( only soft corals mind you) and i will be needing a good salinity meter and also Ca and Kh? Also do i need one for Iodine? Now the hard question. When i move the tank ( corals, no fish) I will be atempting to move as much of the water as possible so will be doing the big food grade tub thing and then i read a helpfull hint about puting a wet (tank water) towel over the live rock ( that has no corals on it i take it?) and the rest will be move in the big chilly bin. But what do i do when i get it all home? Tank on stand.. full tank with old water... ( make new to top it up? )...add rock... add equitment.. hey presto? Now since the water is coming from the other side of auckland it will prob be diffrent.. so i need guidance on how to make it all nice .. * takes a deep breath* Im sorry i'm gonna have lots of questions and brain teasers for you all. Can any one recomend me a good book? Then I have something to turn back to you see.. *Jumps about* Im so excited

Looking at them from above they just look like little yellow flecs. Tank water is all fine exept there is a slight film on the water. Water changes done 2-3 times a week... also just added some new plants, could they have come in on these? Any Ideas!!!!!! Also just spoted a white worm like thini squiggling around... HELP....

oh wow love that one on the bottom left. What is he?
-
wow I love the one on the very left of your middle pic! I need a bigger tank
-
The first one is a red mellon and the second one is a pidgeon. I also have a blue dimond and a roseX turq ( all from Pupuke Aquarium). My tank is a 4 footer and i realy love the size. Since its 2 foot deep i ahve to use a stool to reach the bottom and i still cant reach the bottom at the back lol.
-
Not as of yet no. The wood came out of my bf's arowana tank its so cool and twisted. Ron do you reconise the red mellon?
-
Ya i wanted that fish but the bf said he did not like it! stupid bf! but since he will be paying for it i guess he has to have a bit of a say in it. I got Bryan's checkerboard its a stunning fish and has settled in soo fast.
-
Thank you Luke. Just looking at the full tank shot i can not get over how fast my plants have growen since adding CO2. I should get a better pic soon as the diffrence is amazing. I got a checkerboard discus yesterday so only need one more to finish the tank. Will prob try get one with a cool pattern to compliment my solid guys. Maybe a Turk?
-
Well you all coverted me to pankcake fish so here are pics of two of mine (the rest wont stay still) And a full tank shot for good luck!

So far my tank seems ok. Im very luck i lost no fish but then i did what i could with the resources i had. If you ever need to cover the tank i sugest covering the top in newzparer then heep blankets over. My dad used to cycle and would stuf newzpaper up his shirt on cold mornings untill he warmed up so i stole the idea from him. I am testing my water twice daily and this fish are on rashions aswell so fingers crossed we do ok. Might help that the filter was relitivly clean as it got cleaned the week before. Thankfully dad does have a genny for work and next time he is going pick it up earlyer for me so i can get some sleep. But then agen i will probaly end up at another fish keepers house helping them I would hate for anyone to go through what we all went through and I feel so bad for the people still with out power.
-
ya we lost our power for 19 hours. Dad was on his way with a genny when it flicked back on. I spent the night bolling water on a gass hob and putting it in to bottles to float in the tank. Had to do this every half hour or so for the smaller tank and every few for the big one. I just lately got discus so you can imagen how i was feeling not know if they would be ok. Im just now worried about the lasting effect it has had on my fitler ect. will my bactera be ok? or how long till it dies? should i expect a re cycle.. i have no clue
-
Thank you Jim. He is my fav spends lots of time begging for food.

Well a lot has been happening my side of the woods... Im trying something a little diffrent and i know i few people would not recomended it but its working! Since the bf moved in we decied to re vamp the tank as smaller tank mates where going missing ( this is in the 4 foot by the way). Now some of you might remeber that i have a BGK, Butterfly and a bichir in the tank. I was tossing up on what other kind of non-edable fish to get and i relised i was very very limited. So i started looking in the Discus. so here is the tank as of now We changed the wood around added more plants and chose some discus. They have now been in the tank over 2 weeks and so far so good. I think its because my BGK and bichir are very lazy and dont do anything 99% of the time. Both have Feeding times and other then that they sit about doing nothing. The Red melon has even started chassing the BGK..

So i finaly got some ricca for my tank. I was wanting it as a floating plant for my Butterfly fish to live in but since adding it to my tank it had just blowen everywhere because of the water movement! So iv attached it to a rock with one of my hair nets. Now i was wondering if it will eventualy knit its self togeather to form a mat like thingi.. Also what can you sugest as a floating plant for my tank? Bf said it can not have roots dangling down in to the water!!! Im hoping the ricca works out as im not keen to throw $20 away unlike my know it all bf.

Im intrested on the whole turning the co2 off at night thing. what if you were using a small yeast fementing ( cant spell) system? should it be unpluged at night? or only if you are using gass?
