  1. Curious .. how much can you get for a bucket of Val and a bucket of hornwort ?..
  2. net them out of the collection bucket and emerse them in rain water filled bucket .. using tap water decreases the survival rate .. place mesh over bucket if you don't like the high pitched buzzing at night and collect the food as you please ... just remember to push mesh into bucket to submerge hatched mozzies first ... wha aaah aahhh ! 8)
  3. scratching? ... do you mean flashing ... glancing off rocks etc ? .. sounds like gill irritation/damage ... do regular ( 2nd day) 50% cured water changes and increase oxygen to tank and see how they fair ... from what I have seen once gill damage has occured they will stay that way no matter what ..sorry to say this but if they don't improve , you know what you have to do
  4. Everyone has their own preference but having oil based black hides all the fittings protruding into the tank plus hides the crap( if u have it) growing on the back glass .. and being oil based won't lift if water gets back there ( as can happen!) ... coloured back drop sheets do tend to reflect light shimmers so stay clear of them if you can afford to... but thats just my 2 cents worth
  5. Skuzza .. sounds like you have C.ashmeadii ... keep growing it , they are one of the finest looking of the caulerpas( don't know about the blue look thou?).. one suggestion is to seperate clumps of it so that when it spawns you don't loose the entire colony ... just remember to pinch the ends where you seperate them otherwise they will "bleed" to death ...
  6. Hey guys .. Just PM your addresses ... I will be trimming the tanks sunday night , so will courier monday morning .. don't worry about freight( thats what works for ) .. cookie that means you too , + don't think my tanks are up to the par of your guys ones :-? .. so one day I will post pics when I'm happy with them and learn to post the pic's cheers Klay.
  7. Have these species of caulerpa growing in my tanks with various soft corals ( various leathers , mushies , polyps ), LPS's/anemones . have had no prob with the 'weeds growing around and over them.. but SPS could be different? .. don't know , never kept them .. prefer easy maint tank systems( not home most of the time). 8) 8)
  8. Don't think its the toxins .. caulerpa grows and smothers everything of light/current .. hence lawnmowing the bugga's in a tank.
  9. AS far as I know the "TAXIFOLIA' have a much broader/thicker "frond' style leaf than "MEXICANA" .. have compared my variant to photos and they are more finely defined ... very delicate "fern' looking.
  10. @Brian sounds like C mexicana .. PM your guys " daytime" addresses and I can courier a bag to you's ... enjoy .. if anyone has other variants .. let me know .. can swap 8)
  11. cool! seems they are out there .. what variants do you guys have ? ..
  12. I know most reefers don't like Caulerpa but with my garden reef tanks always have to throw the lawnmower in there to trim the bloody stuff ..with the negative attitude of MAF/DOC don't know if I can swap cuttings for mushrooms or other caulerpa sp , or just give the stuff away ... let me know the situation and if good and you want any... have C Mexicana ..( heaps to give away). C ashmeadii .. ( growing after usual spawning ... nearly ready for cuttings) C "unkown crinkly leaf style" .. (small growth coming along well).. not ready yet plus unkown calcious type that looks like pear cactus (without the spikes) At the moment I just add the trimmings to my veg & plant gardens . but if anyone wants any , give me a bell. 8) have reds avail as well
  13. wow , curious that you had babies straight away , as far as i know mystery snails lay eggs (which take awhile to hatch) above the waterline , usually where you don't want them to , like the lid/tank area so you cant remove lid :-? but good on ya !! ..
  14. Can't sell val in NZ ..tell that to the LFS .. you'd be suprised what goes on..... anyways amazed they have hornwort in aussie and val ! I know of some real cool collection spots for both but since it's illegal I shall not say "BOO" ... I might add hornwort is the best plant for baby livebearers ... and local val is strong enough to survive/grow in a brackish set up " but I only heard that"... tra la la la laaaaaa and any spare hornwort has to be dried out as it grows faster than a monk in a " gentlemans club" can't have it spreading like what comes out of a "gentlemans club".. 8) *Edited By Ballistic*
  15. had post in catfish section . but.... thought better here .. anyone had experience with these guys , have 3 males and 1 xl female ready to explode eggs..
  16. aren't these guys up in the bay of islands . so would make them a local species ? , have only heard this second hand from mates who dive there but I doubt their knowledge of trop marines but when they say "big strippy fish with long banded spiney fins" make you wonder. but know officially that frog fish and banded shrimp have settled here up north ... so you never know .. heres hoping
  17. Hey one way of bringing it out will include a bottle of wine , tweezers and a cotton ball and some formuline.. first pour a glass of wine .. sit next to tank , place arm into tank along the bottom , commence to sit there finishing bottle until leech appears and attaches , extract arm and use tweezers (lit cig can subsitute) to remove said leech .. then use cotton ball to stop bleeding... then place said leech in the nasty liquid , formuline not the wine .. and send pic of said leech to this site for us to identify ........ hopefully it won't be a spiney eel
  18. tank was fine ... the shrimps were in there for about 6 months , tank full of live rock/life plus the clowns an anemone.. only new intro was the brittlestar isolated from main tank because of coral munching .... stupid me  !! really pissed off with my self
  19. simple .. move the light unit to the front of the tank so that it shines back into the tank... plus add an actinic marine tube ( blue) ... late at night just have this on ( at the front too) your cardinals/neons glow like nothing before
  20. one BBQ'd brittlestar coming up !
  21. What the hell eats shrimp shells ... my favorite shrimps have dissapeared from my live rock tank .. just emptied the rock and stuff to look for them or the remains ... nothing ... not a single section of the body/leg left .. like they dissapeared into thin air .. not in the rock either ...........only has 2 clowns and a large black brittle star in there ( the one who eats leathers).... stumped !! any ideas ?
  22. Just to add to last post... saw archer fish for sale as food in Thailand and when down in krabi at a seafood restaurant where they were serving all sorts of exotic seafood .. spotted one of the workers about to munch down of a scat the size of the dinner plate .. he couldn't understand why I wanted to buy it off him to eat "noo noo ... no good enough for you , only for thais" .... anyway it needed salt !! ... lol
  23. the tank might be loaded with too much plant .. ph drop over night ?
