  1. After working in the aquatic industry prof for three years and as a hobbist for 20 :-? years .. angel fish are just like humans , they can be the coolest thing around or the complete b*stard .. in 2's and 3's they can pick on each other quite nastily or luv each other .. the more the better with them I thinks ... treat each one with an individual personality and you will eventually find the best buddies for the tank .. just watch those neons anyway thats my 2 cents worth .. hope it helps.. cheers Klay.
  2. Anyone had luck with breeding and raising banjo catfish ... I have three males and one whoppa of a female who looks like she is about to explode eggs
  3. Hey Modern , sounds like you have created a brackish tank ... hope yur fish are ok?
  4. Alan .. the alligator fish are the Xenentodon Cancila .. other name is a "needle fish" but were sold under the alligator name over here about 10 years ago , I had 3 pairs of these , female is larger and has a red hump above the head area . very easy to breed but the young like eating each other... they live in tropical freshwater but have seen them in brackish waters over in Thailand and Cambodia , as well as freshwater rivers like the Khwae Noi river picking off baby tiger barbs .. always amazing to see fish you've kept in the wild .. hope this helps. Cheers Klay
  5. snowman , make sure that " boiling" water is de chlorinated, otherwise bye bye bio.. kbird , throw a shunk loach in there , less aggressive and are nazi's with snails. caper , hold out for the otto's , but get 6 at least , they like grouping.
  6. If your still thinking of having a brackish set up let me know , Have had "too" many tanks over the years keeping these .. ....................monos A & S ,scats, archers E & C, gobies , alligator fish , crocodile fish , robustis , numerous types of puffers , tiger fish M & Q , half beaks , chanda , etc ..know alot about tank habits and traits with these little guys and not so little guys ( tigers) .. anyway happy to share what I have learnt about them ..plus what plants to keep. hope you do set one up as these are the hardiest type of aquarium fish around . plus the coolest
  7. I set up AR1200 of this style for a friend .. we kept the overhead filter and installed a canister .. you have to cut and join and cut and join etc .. the intake/outtake to move them over to the right half of the tank .. the good thing about adding the canister is you use this for all your replaceable media ( carbon , ammo sorb , phos sorb etc) without upsetting the bio up top .. We eventually converted this to a nice soft coral reef tank and after changing tubes and modifying skimmer to fit works great plus looks fantastic ... with the water noise up top we put ehiem filter sponge up there to break up the full water gussing thru there...just keep an eye on it clogging up tho
  8. Cheers for that ... don't like my chances but will give them a whirl. 8)
  9. One of my polka dot cardinals is holding a cluster of eggs in the mouth .. so want to remove from my garden reef tank , don't want to have eggs spat out under stress so anyone done this before , or should I just let them become part of the system.
  10. Putting the gear shift in reverse and getting back to the original post and link .. those snowflake clowns .. wtf are they , a morph , hybrid ?? and are they available over here ?? .
  11. 5 Ltrs of water for all those fish ... sounds like they got ammonia burn in the chilly , hence the inflamed gills and milling around the surface .. better next time to either bag small lots or get a large chilly ( 30 ltr+) and fill 3/4 with tank water ... having done tank removals professionally before you can easily transport marine organisms as well this way safely ...
  12. have you moved the tank yet ?
  13. After seeing the nasty big olive green brittle stars ( 12" +) at Jansens and being told by an young employee ( I might add couldn't be bothered to get one out of the tank to sell )that they are fish hunters (I always take what they say with a grain of salt anyway ) ... but makes me think about my ones ... have 6 black brittles( 6" - 8") that are doing no damage except for one that stripped a small leather ( put in spare live rock tank now ) .... now are these blitters going to cause me any probs in the future .. i know that no one will touch/eat them so thats good but don't want to see that revearsed ] So has anyone got these or had any things happen while keeping them??

    Baby banggai

Hey Alois , good to see ya breeding them again.... when can we place our orders ?
  15. Brianenome ... your better to shoot over the hills to Tauranga and collect water from there . .. plus you can collect sum really cool stuff from there if you know where to look ... sea horses , pipe fish,, vivid blue/red stripped shrimp , ( not glass) etc ..plus mother "F'kn" large brackish mossie larvae ( 15mm) good for long survival in marine tanks , lived there for 6 years and found lots of interesting sites to explore.. 8) ....
  16. opps should read piha far left...................
  17. it's a catch 22 up here , best place for salt water is the west coast , no shipping pollution as is in the hauraki harbour ( but if your desperate takapuna would be the place) .. but best catching of glass shrimps is the east coast ..in auckland main , takapuna at low tide.. but prefer up long bay around the corner to the right ... or langs beach has bloody big buggars there, but maybe too far to travel .. they have the bearded anenomes there too . but if you want the blood red anenomes , piha is the easiest place to collect them at low time( rocks to the far right before you go around to the next bay) they are under the large rocks at low tide... this may help.... 8)
  18. One way I've found that works is to inject PH DOWN thru a syringe into the mouth .. just watch them dissolve before your eyes ... pays to remove rock into treatment tank first as this stuff is lethal for the surrounding area in a reef tank .... drastic I know but bluddy hell does it work !! ...
  19. Nice looking tank ..very well done inwall system , but think black would hide the inlet pipes ( look like deformed man bits ) .. lol .
  20. Java fern , Anubias & Val ... can't go wrong with these guys with plecos. Bubble Bubble Bubble ..............
  21. Hey Mystic V ... what species do you have? ... glad you like him/her ... bummer travis & vicki gave up on him ... see my post re:friendly/nazi puffers but there is more on the big bad world of the net ... the bigger the teeth the bigger the carnage !!!
  22. cool but looking for the real leaf fish ( Monocirrhus Polycanthus ) ... had these guys back about 10 years ago 1 female and 3 males ... got them breeding and boy was she a s.l.u.t.... would breed with one then pushed out so male could look after eggs , so she'd go see the next one and on an on an on it went .... ..... want to get back into breeding these little bugga's .. lol
  23. As the title reads .... I'm on the look out for these little dudes ... the more the better ... looking for 8 if I can ....
