PENEJANE
I have just discovered ( while watching my golden guppy to see if she is the one dropping her fry at present ) that while looking really close up at the tank that I have these little white/black crawling critters on the inside of my glass. They don't seem to be in the water and they look as if they walk on the waters surface. What could they be? I would take a pic but my camera doesn't do macro mode close enough to see them and they are only just visible. Have I got something bad lurking about in my tank?? Any help would be much appreciated. PENEJANE
Was just sitting there and looking about again and these little things almost look like tiny ants. Some are darker and some are lighter in colour. Should I be worried??
Modern Angl
Mosquitos?
Caryl
Are they under water or just bopping about on the surface? Surface critters are nothing to worry about. If mozzies, modern angl has had experience with them
PENEJANE
I took the lid off tonight and had a look at my new babies and noticed that what ever they are they skip across the top of the water really fast. I hope that they won't cause trouble of any sort :-?
Ira
They're not a problem. I forget the name of them. But some fish will eat them, otherwise they just live on the top of the water and keep to themselves.
Faran
Main thing is to create some water surface movement by angling the powerhead or filter output. If nothing else, get a bubble stone. Then again, it could be free food!
PENEJANE
I do have an air stone running and the top of the water is always moving . But if its free food for the fish then all is good as I got a whole lot more now lol
kevin_wgtn
You may find that they are a type of Aphid. In which case if you have plant growing at the surface of the water, that the Aphids attack this and cause the growing buds to die. You may wish to hold the plant underwater and scoop the "Bugs" off the surface with a fine net. Better safe than sorry.

caserole
PENEJANE you said they look like little ants , could they be springtails? free food either way
PENEJANE
Yeah I have decided to leave it for a couple of days and see how it all goes. If they get out of hand then I will have to find a way to remove them but in the mean time they are food for my guppies and fry
Alan
Now PJ if you had killies in that tank, you'd have no problems at all. Alan
PENEJANE
Well the fish that I brought yesterday that the lady said only had a little bit of ammonia burn due to traveling in bad conditions died during the night. It was a lepoard, cobra or snakeskin kind of guppy and they don't get them in often at all and I am totaly pissed that it died when they said it would come right in 24 hrs when it didn't even last 12!!. And I have no idea what Killies look like lol but I think I will just stick to my guppies for now.
Faran
Aww, sorry to hear that, PJ! I heard you askin about Ammonia Burn last night in chatroom but didn't say anything (frankly I don't know anything about it). Sounds like you lost a beautiful guppy though! PENEJANE
well I don't know if it was ammonia burn either as I have never seen it. I am just going on what the store owner told me. She said that the fish had travled a long way and were so many in one bag that there can be an ammonia build up. What I saw tho was little lumpy white specks on the tail and all the fins. I asked if it was whitespot and she said no as it would be all over the body not just the fins and tail. But still I am annoyed that it died as it was a very beautiful fish. Guess I will just have to be on the look out for another one later down the track.
Caper
Hi Penejane! How's the baby? Sorry to hear about your fish. Do you have a still photo of the guppy with the beautiful blue fins?
PENEJANE
yeah I think there are some pics of the ones your talking about in the livebearer section with pictures The guppies with the blue/purple fins are from my first drop of fry that I got just after easter. vapo
I've seen gouramis with whitespot and it was mainly on their fins and tail. This could be due to the fact that it's easier for the whitespot parasite to burrow into the fins than the body as they don't have the same protective scales as the body(?). So could be whitespot although I would've expected to see at least some on the body.
