deaf_rattle
Hey My name is Matt and im currently living in central otago and was given a small fish bowl and couple of goldfish as a belated birthday gift last year. Those who know me, will know i dont like doing things by halves so the bowl is now empty and i have 2 60litre tanks. Had several issues which i think im mostly on top of now. I have mostly telescopic eye goldfish, a couple of comets and i have some fish that should be arriving this week and next Minnows, leopard fish, butterfly suckers and blackmoar. Really enjoying this new found passion and even though my main hobby has always been motorsport and automotive stuff, im slowly becoming very fascinated in fish and aquariums. Once im happy with the 2 tanks ive got now, i am hoping to set up a tropical set up or 2. Cheers

Caryl
Welcome Matt (no pun intended) Although I applaud you getting rid of the goldfish bowl, 60L tanks are really not big enough for goldfish, especially comets. I personally don't like to see comets in anything smaller than a pond. The fancier varieties, like the telescopic eye, are different as they do not swim about like the short finned varieties. I don't know how many fish you already have but you will need bigger if you are going to add the fish you say are coming next week. You are also going to have a problem with cycling if they are all added at once (depending on numbers). What is a butterfly sucker? If you mean a hillstream loach, these fish are tropical and need water with a high oxygen content and good water flow. Waterflow is something fancy goldfish do not like. deaf_rattle
I like a good pun, so much i entered a local pun contest with 10 of my best. I rang up to see if any had won and i was told no pun in ten did. Thanks for the comments, i have 10 minnows coming and 2 leopards, i was going to divide the minnows and put the 2 leopards together. Yeah the butterfly sucker (what i was told) after a quick google would seem to be a hillstream loach, They come in another week or 2 so hopefully cycling should be okish. I will look into a larger tank, i was thinking of making a perspex one at some point.

karina
Hi Matt :bggrn: It seems that the new name the stores I've been in use is butterfly sucker. Personally I've always known them as Borneo catfish. They prefer lower tropical temps of up to 24 degrees. Have fun fish keeping :f77:
F15hguy
Borneo suckers (Pseudogastromyzon myersii) and butterfly suckers (Beaufortia kweichowensis) are 2 different but similar fish, awesome fun if you have a high current tank

F15hguy
thats what i get from googling and what the importers give to me matches that, the butterflies have more small spots and wider body , the borneo's have larger spots more towards the tail.... I have a pair of butterflies. And one Borneo. Will look into making the tank more suited for them.
F15hguy
I created a high current zone by putting a internal filter (Aquaone Maxi 101 ) on its side near the bottom and arranging stones around an area to make a circular current they seem to love it, but the guppies in with them dont get knocked around too much (except if they try to steal the pleco chip off the suckers)

Might look at getting a seperate set up for these suckers later on. Minnows and leopard fish should arrive tomorrow! yus

Another point to prove shops get it wrong... My mother was sold a butterfly that is a Borneo. Borneos always Labelled as butterfly's now. F15hguy
the shops just call it what the importers call it, I"m sure if I ordered some of one importer and some off another importer I would get different fish.... had a strange looking one the other day that was a brick red colour and the spots were in unusual patterns.
