jasonnz
Well - it's still there - but its certainly not as bad as it was. I do very regular water changes .. 15% 25% and 50% over 2 weeks. I also have carbon in 1 filter and purigen in the other - which certainly helps a lot. The tank has crystal clarity - but the water does turn yellowish/brackish ever so slightly just before the water is due for a change. I expect it to take another 12 months of so yet before the water colour is at a level I am happy with. (although .. before that happens - we might be getting a newer .. bigger tank) >> ! F15hguy
2 x Mollies - 1 has a fungal issues - he is just crazy ugly with all sorts of nasties. We took him and the other remaining molly out of the tank and unfortunately I euthanized the other 2 as they were on last legs. The fish are old - my mollies came from one of my ex employees and he had them for some time before I got them. apart from the fungal issues - which I have tried to remedy - the fish is eating, swimming and playing like nothing is wrong. I think his time has come he just doesn't know it yet. The other molly was taken out of the big tank simply because I didn't want him in the main tank if something was likely to spread.- Diagnosis. not good. best cure for molly fungus i've found is to put them in a tank with 100% fresh water and a god handful of duck weed, keep the nitrates below 5ppm for a month and most of the time they will come right. duckeed is awesome for sucking up nitrates but if you have anything else you think is better go for it

jasonnz
Update : Large Molley is back in main tank. Doing just fine. Little molly literally fell apart - was euthanized. 2 Rams with pop eye - 1 got pinecone. Both Euthanized. Cory - his arm fell off. Was very say. His belly started to literally peel back. Euthanized. 2 tetras - bloat (worse than anything I have ever seen) unable to swim ... euthanized. Everyone else in the tank is just fine. Water levels are sweet. wee2
I reckon I spent perhaps 1500 on tank 1500 on lighting 1500 on filtration + heater 2000 on substrates and plants 500 on stand maybe 1100 on fish plus maybe another 1000 on misc stuff, chemicals etc ... i reckon I still need to spend around $1000 to finish the tank off. all money I would happily spend again. that is a heavy cost mate. but beautiful set up to see. shud you upgrade some new fish soon, more aggressive and characterd ones
F15hguy
$2000 substrate and plants???? that seems a bit high????
Godly3vil
$2000 substrate and plants???? that seems a bit high???? Not really, gotta think how much each bag of substrate fert cost, probably around $50-60 each x I would think in a tank this size 20+ bags, then plants aren't cheap. I know I have spent about 1k just on plants and my tanks only 450ltr.
F15hguy
wow..... i really gotta remove the silver spoon. had no Idea thats how much it cost, i've always bought and grown on.
Godly3vil
Not really able to grow on if your impatient like me and don't want to wait years for java ferns and anubias to grow.
F15hguy
java fern takes 1 yr to grow????? I have 3 big ones and can almost supply my store with saleable size ones anubias though are slow... but crypts, ambulia, Val, etc.... especially if you set up a aquaponics setup before you go for the full planted setup. Godly3vil
You ever tried to grow a big bushy needle leaf or windelov java fern? I recently bought a huge needle leaf plant that has probably around 250 leafs and it has been growing for years to get to that size.
F15hguy
never tried one of those, just the standard ones, I haven't had much experience with the plant thing yet, still just learning. have a 400L tank that I might be able to play with soon..... (still under half high tech attitude atm, need to make more $$$ out of fishroom then boss might be interested.)

Adrienne
$2000 substrate and plants???? that seems a bit high???? I've just done my 5ft and my costs would be similar to jasonnz for fertiliser, sand and grit plus plants. I could have gone cheaper but crypts, in particular, are expensive. jasonnz
I don't think the cost's were excessive. I am very happy with the end result. I have been focusing on keeping a healthy tank - and getting the clarity sorted.. Now that I know everything is working - I intend to plant it out some more. I wanted a good substrate that was going to feed any plant. Now that I know it's doing as intended .. I am looking to upgrade to a more technical co2 setup and I am going to re-attempt spome ground cover using dwarf hairgrasss. I must take pictures of this and post for you all. jasonnz
Hi everyone, Good to be back after a small break. Here is a picture of my tank. As you can see my planting has been unsuccessful. Plants grow fine .. but some of my fish think it's funny to pull them out. I loose alot of plants this way. I was just talking to my wife and explained that I would like to temporarily relocate my fish .. while I have another go at planting the tank - This time I will leave the tank growing for 6 months and only small fish .... I might sell move my larger fish on .... or move them into the reception area into another new tank. I'm still trying to decide. I have invested many thousands and after months of tinkering .. now understand the eco system well enough to make everything work I believe. superico
i really like this tank. i have been very interested in it since i saw the thread !drool: but in my opinion it lacks consistency and structure. maybe if you merge the wood and the rocks, you could make it look more natural? (this is just a suggestion) cheers superico
Godly3vil
I really like the layout of the wood and rocks but think he needs some larger plants like swords and some big stem groups.
