Caryl
Been here for years. I have bred them and so have many others. A lovely little cold water livebearer.

F15hguy
Aquascope used to stock them, had a nice yellow and black strain underway. dunno what happened to them, they were a bit less productive than most live bearers, (if anyone near the old fish farm in ohauiti they were in the pond 4th row in 3rd and 4th ponds up) that was 4-5 years ago though. twinkles
Jansens had them years ago, as did some other stores. And they're for sale here and trademe fairly often as aquarium fish.
Caryl
They were very popular back in the 80's. They are not as prolific as guppies and I guess they lost favour when more colourful tropicals became more readily available
Stella
Ah cool, thanks guys. Does anyone know if there are any other wild populations?
F15hguy
Rumour only, but I have heard of them in the Waikato near the Geothermal outflow. I also wouldn't be surprised to find them in the old fishfarm runoff creek in Ohauiti (just watch out for the Mega Eel =P she was hand tamed years ago, so she prob not thare any more
twinkles
I read somewhere that there are a few around auckland, and used to be some in northland but the northland ones may be extinct now.

I also wouldn't be surprised to find them in the old fishfarm runoff creek in Ohauiti (just watch out for the Mega Eel =P she was hand tamed years ago, so she prob not thare any more She must have had some offspring come back, there are regularly smaller eels down there, we see them when we walk the dog down the back near the new construction sites... There also a massive Eel up Waitewheta (sp?) that is hand-tame...
F15hguy
ok, a bit of grave digging but I have just been offered a breeding group of these (1-2 males 3-4 females) if anyone is interested I'll see if she wants to pass them on
