snookie
My Fx5 has suddenly started making a Noise , i asume it is the impeller, i have pulled apart and cleaned but still noisey , its a few years old is it time to get a new impeller ?
GrahamC
Presumably if the impeller is causing the noise, then it will not be balanced, or broken somewhere. If it is not, then need to look elsewhere.

ilah
I had a 'noise' start in mine a few months ago. Gradually got worse until the flow started to slow, noticed wear on the impeller so bought a new one, same thing happened after a few weeks so I now have a whole new motor housing with impeller so fingers crossed this one wont clap out either. Has been a very frustrating, expensive and time consuming affair but I really like the filter so want to get it running properly. Hopefully yours is not heading the same way. Try googling 'fluval fx5 troubleshooting' it is a pdf file and pretty helpful, just a process of elimination
Morcs
Careful with those impellers, they aint cheap... I used to strip and clean the impellor and associated areas every second clean of the filter, pays to keep them tip top - but the more handling of it, higher chance of breaking it. I dropped one once...

henward
If the flow is fine, i would leave it. if ther eis no rock stuck or anything, then the impeller will in time give in, it wont explode and ruin everything, it will just start to slow. impeller are about $100 dololars each, but lasts a long time, the only time i replaced was when i dropped, now when i clean the impeller, ONLY ON GRASS lol so if it drops, no problems! good ol' natural cushion. wheni clean the canister, i get a high pressure hose and shoot directly into the tube that points up, this flushes bits out. i dont ever really take apart the pump unit. blueether
Surely an impeller an a Fx5 should last more than a year or so?
Caryl
Perhaps the old one had not been seated correctly? :dunno:
