henward
yeah, shows you those red tanning lights. they are not actually just tanning lights. real tanning darkens the fish to a darker colour. fake lights simply make reds enhanced to the human eye. i prefer teh less enhanced version, its the true colours. even in competitions in singapore,s ome are enhanced. Only when i see a photo of harvesting - and the red is blood red thats impressive!
ally07
Here's a good example of the difference lighting makes; http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?424735-Suuuuuuuuuuuper-Reeeeeeeeeeeed Check out the pic on page one compared to page two... lol! It's like beer goggles.. Don't see the point of faking it like that. At the end of the day, everybody knows it's just an optical illusion. David R
Yeah agreed. In this case I just think he was doing it to highlight what a difference the lighting can make and why some of the photos look so red.
henward
yeah, still looks cool with the red lighting, still prefer the real colours. if i can get mine to blood red or dark orange with no fake lights. i will be happy.
ally07
Came home tonight, tried to feed some mealworms to the aro, which he didn't take.. Surprising because he has NEVER refused mealworms, but he did have quite a large feed last night, so he might be fasting it off tonight. Then he did this MASSIVE freak out. Thrashing around for about 5 seconds, I think he was trying to jump ship, but in that short time, he managed to get water all down the front of the glass and the floor (2m splash zone). The only gap was a thin feeding gap which is about 50cm long and 2cm wide. He also managed to injure himself - the first scale directly behind the head is now DANGLING by a thread. I am so tempted to just reach in and rip it off for him because I can see that the scale is digging into the wound when he swims, but I think it's probably best for it to drop on its own overnight. I don't think I should disturb him in his violent mood lol. Any ideas why this might have happened? He has done freak outs before and lost 2 scales on 2 separate instances, but I can't think of what triggered this round. I don't think it is related to his fasting, but then again, I can't be sure. My poor little stressed out aro! :nilly:
henward
my one freaks out if kt gets substrate in its mouth. say trying to pick up shrimp from bottom and gets some sand in the mouth it freaks out. but jumping and hurting itself, maybe just startled. id just let it chill out. where do you live in aucks? animals can sense earthquakes easy auckland had a quake last night
ally07
I don't know what could have startled it though. It was not a case of me turning on the lights and it getting a fright, because it was a good 10 min after I turned on the room lights. I wasn't even looking at it haha! Just flipped out. :nilly: I live in West Auckland but I doubt if it was the quake lol, the time difference was about 3 hours post-quake. henward
mystery. hope its ok though! when scales get injured i just leave it, always falls off byitself, and its better that way. i hate this surgery stuff people do. its unneccesary! ally07
Ok, I'm just going to say it lol. What's so special about black aros? The colour fades over time right? Wouldn't it eventually end up looking like a brownish silver?
David R
Blacks are similar to silvers, just like platinum is similar to tinfoil..... Their colours fade a bit, but an adult black still has more colour than an adult silver. They also [almost] never get drop eye, and IMO they are a much niser more streamlined shape where as the silvers tend to get thicker and taller in proportion to their length and lose that serpentine charm that (again, IMO) makes them the nicest looking aro there is. Check out JohnPTC's big blacks here: All well over 2', closer to 3' IIRC...
ally07
I think I see what you mean about the slimmer shape. The no drop eye is also a good perk lol. I dunno, maybe I prefer big fat aros to slim slender ones. I like my aros with some junk in the.. tail lol. I found another inspirational photo: My 2-year goal is to get mine to look like that (or as close as I can).. :spop:
David R
Yeah the big solid asians are awesome too, but they don't have the same swimming motion that hypnotised me the first time I saw a small black in the Whangarei LFS about 12 years ago. Thats what hooked me on aros and I guess thats why they're my favourite.
