ally07
This may sound like a dumb question, but honestly every night when I feed my green aro, I have to be very conscious of where he is simply because he gets so excited during feeding. I can't drop the prawns in because he only feeds from the top (hand feeding is the most effective) but when he goes for the prawn, it's like jaws! I know that his bites don't really hurt but man, his speed and his tendency to splash water everywhere never fails to give me an instinctive fright.. It's not a phobia, but I'd call it a healthy respect for monster fish haha.. Am I alone in this?

ally07
That's exactly what I mean! Thing is, my aro isn't as quick off the mark as yours was, so I have to dangle it for a few seconds before releasing when he's near, otherwise it'll fall to the bottom and I'll have to roll up my sleeves.. When I first got him, he used to eat very gently from my hand but after a few days it's just CHOMP.. Maybe he likes the airtime haha, but he REFUSES to eat food off the floor even though he knows that it's a prawn and he just saw it drop down but didn't catch it in time.. :an!gry
Fruju
Nah, I would be scared if I had a full grown jag cichlid, they have mad fangs. The aros Im not really worried about, although my jar will hit anything that touches the surface, I tried putting in a gba to clean up the tank and it smashed it as soon as it broke the surface. ally07
Not sure what I'd be more worried about, the bite wound or the possibility of infection.. I know a guy who used to work in a pet store and he had an open wound from a splinter which he (not very wisely) exposed to an african cichlid tank.. Long story short, the wound didn't heal for weeks and he ended up going to hospital to get stitches and antibiotics. Very possible that he's the first/ only (don't quote me) person in NZ to have this specific infection.. Apparently it only occurs in a certain African lake lol.. ally07
What about oscars? I've never had one, but I've seen the one at Animates Mt Eden and that one honestly looks like he could take a finger if he bit hard enough lol.. Fruju
Oscars sort of give you a graze? They only have little grinders but my old one did draw blood on occaision.
Joshlikesfish
Does anyone remember the guy selling his aro and claiming it bit his finger off? It was on trade me for awhile.
Nymox
Oscars are nothing, I get bitten by nearly everything lol. Fingers go in first I find out what happens later. Ornate Bichirs some times bite me when I'm busy with plants in the tank, draws blood very easily as she twists and pulls. I will try video it some time. That doesn't scare me one bit. There is however one exception, I will not let my fingers get in this mouth!
henward
ihave been bitten by my rtg before, and it does break the skin, not to the piont of bleeding muchthough. its uncomfortable but not as bad, more psychological. they swallow whole, they dont really chew or rip meat off your hand. when aro hunt live food, they tend to be mroe vigirous.
